Interaction-Induced Decoherence of Atomic Bloch Oscillations

Abstract

We show that the energy spectrum of the Bose-Hubbard model amended by a static field exhibits Wigner-Dyson level statistics. In itself a characteristic signature of quantum chaos, this induces the irreversible decay of Bloch oscillations of cold, interacting atoms loaded into an optical lattice, and provides a Hamiltonian model for interaction-induced decoherence.

Multiparticle quantum chaos in tilted optical lattices

It is shown that, in the parameter regime of state of the art experiments on Bose-Einstein condensates loaded into optical lattices, the energy spectrum of the 1D Bose-Hubbard model amended by a static field exhibits unambiguous signatures of quantum chaos. In the dynamics, this leads to the irreversible decay of Bloch oscillations.

Interaction-induced quantum phase revivals in 1D atomic Bloch oscillations

Florian Meinert, Manfred J. Mark, Emil Kirilov +4 more

We study atomic Bloch oscillations in an ensemble of one-dimensional tilted superfluids in the Bose-Hubbard regime. For large values of the tilt, we observe interaction-induced coherent decay and matter-wave quantum phase revivals of the Bloch oscillating ensemble. We analyze the revival period dependence on interactions by means of a Feshbach resonance. When reducing the value of the tilt, we observe the disappearance of the quasi-periodic phase revival signature towards an irreversible decay of Bloch oscillations, indicating the transition from regular to quantum chaotic dynamics.

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates: Quantum counterpart of dynamical instability

Andrey R. Kolovsky, Hans Jürgen Korsch, Eva-Maria Graefe

We study the Bloch dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice modeled by a Hamiltonian of Bose-Hubbard type. The corresponding mean-field system described by a discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation can exhibit dynamical (or modulation) instability due to chaotic dynamics and equipartition over the quasimomentum modes. It is shown that these phenomena are related to Bogoliubov's depletion of the Bose-Einstein condensate and a decoherence of the condensate in the many-particle description. Three types of dynamics are distinguished: (i) decaying oscillations in the region of dynamical instability and (ii) persisting Bloch oscillations or (iii) periodic decay and revivals in the region of stability.

Bose–Hubbard Hamiltonian: Quantum chaos approach

Andrey R. Kolovsky

We discuss applications of the theory of quantum chaos to one of the paradigm models of many-body quantum physics — the Bose–Hubbard (BH) model, which describes, in particular, interacting ultracold Bose atoms in an optical lattice. After preliminary, pure quantum analysis of the system we introduce the classical counterpart of the BH model and the governing semiclassical equations of motion. We analyze these equations for the problem of Bloch oscillations (BOs) of cold atoms where a number of experimental results are available. The paper is written for nonexperts and can be viewed as an introduction to the field.

Floquet-Bloch operator for the Bose-Hubbard model with static field

Andrey R. Kolovsky, Andreas Buchleitner

This paper deals with the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian amended by an external static field-a model for cold spinless atoms loaded in a quasi-one-dimensional optical lattice and subject to an additional static (for example, gravitational) force. The analysis is performed in terms of the Floquet-Bloch operator, defined as the evolution operator of the system over one Bloch period. Depending on the particular choice of parameters, the spectrum is found to be either regular or chaotic. Moreover, in the chaotic case, the matrix of the Floquet-Bloch operator is well characterized as a random matrix of the circular orthogonal ensemble.
