Abstract

The Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian of spin-2 cold bosons with repulsive interaction in an optical lattice is proposed. After neglecting the hopping term, the site-independent Hamiltonian and its energy eigenvalues and eigenstates are obtained. We consider the hopping term as a perturbation to do the calculations in second order and draw the phase diagrams for different cases. The phase diagrams show that there is a phase transition from Mott insulator with integer number bosons to superfluid when the ratio ${c}_{0}/t$ ${(c}_{0}$ is the spin-independent on-site interaction and t is the hopping matrix element between adjacent lattice sites) is decreased to a critical value and that there is a different phase boundary between superfluid and Mott-insulator phase for different Zeeman level component in some ground states. We find that the position of phase boundary for different Zeeman level component is related to its average population in the Mott ground state.

Superfluid–Mott-insulator transition of spin-2 cold bosons in an optical lattice in a magnetic field

Shuo Jin, Jing-Min Hou, Bing-Hao Xie +2 more

The superfluid--Mott-insulator transition of spin-2 boson atoms with repulsive interaction in an optical lattice in a magnetic field is presented. By using the mean-field theory, the Mott ground states and phase diagrams of the superfluid--Mott-insulator transition at zero temperature are revealed. An applied magnetic field leads to splitting of some phase boundaries. For all the initial Mott ground states containing multiple spin components, different spin components take on different phase boundaries. It is found that in this system phase boundaries with different magnetization can be moved in different ways by changing only the intensity of the applied magnetic field.

Superfluid–Mott insulator transition of spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice

Shunji Tsuchiya, Susumu Kurihara, T. Kimura

We study the superfluid--Mott insulator (SF-MI) transition of spin-1 bosons interacting antiferromagnetically in an optical lattice. Starting from a Bose-Hubbard tight-binding model for spin-1 bosons, we obtain the zero-temperature phase diagram by a mean-field approximation. We find that the MI phase with an even number of atoms per site is a spin singlet state, while the MI phase with an odd number of atoms per site has spin 1 at each site in the limit of $t=0$, where $t$ is the hopping matrix element. We also show that the superfluid phase is a polar state as in the case for a spin-1 Bose condensate in a harmonic trap. It is found that the MI phase is strongly stabilized against the SF-MI transition when the number of atoms per site is even, due to the formation of singlet pairs. We derive the effective spin Hamiltonian for the MI phase with one atom per site and briefly discuss the spin order in the MI phase.

Ground-state phase diagram of spin- 12 bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice

Laurent de Forges de Parny, F. Hébert, V. G. Rousseau +2 more

We study a two-species bosonic Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In addition to the usual contact repulsive interactions between the particles, the Hamiltonian has an interconversion term which allows the transformation of two particles from one species to the other. The phases are characterized by their solid or superfluid properties and by their polarization, i.e., the difference in the populations. When interspecies interactions are smaller than the intraspecies ones, the system is unpolarized, whereas in the opposite case the system is unpolarized in even Mott insulator lobes and polarized in odd Mott lobes and also in the superfluid phase. We show that in the latter case the transition between the Mott insulator of total density 2 and the superfluid can be of either second or first order depending on the relative values of the interactions, whereas the transitions are continuous in all other cases.

First- and second-order superfluid–Mott-insulator phase transitions of spin-1 bosons with coupled ground states in optical lattices

Konstantin V. Krutitsky, Matthias Timmer, R. Graham

We investigate the superfluid--Mott-insulator quantum phase transition of spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice created by pairs of counterpropagating linearly polarized laser beams, driving an ${F}_{g}=1$ to ${F}_{e}=1$ internal atomic transition. The whole parameter space of the resulting two-component Bose-Hubbard model is studied. We find that the phase transition is not always second order as in the case of spinless bosons, but can be first order in certain regions of the parameter space. The calculations are done in the mean-field approximation by means of exact numerical diagonalization as well as within the framework of perturbation theory.

Phase diagram of two-component bosons on an optical lattice

Ehud Altman, Walter Hofstetter, Eugene Demler +1 more

We present a theoretical analysis of the phase diagram of two-component bosons on an optical lattice. A new formalism is developed which treats the effective spin interactions in the Mott and superfluid phases on the same footing. Using this new approach we chart the phase boundaries of the broken spin symmetry states up to the Mott to superfluid transition and beyond. Near the transition point, the magnitude of spin exchange can be very large, which facilitates the experimental realization of spin-ordered states. We find that spin and quantum fluctuations have a dramatic effect on the transition, making it first order in extended regions of the phase diagram. When each species is at integer filling, an additional phase transition may occur, from a spin-ordered insulator to a Mott insulator with no broken symmetries. We determine the phase boundaries in this regime and show that this is essentially a Mott transition in the spin sector.

Superfluid–Mott-insulator transition in the spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Hubbard model

Ahmet Tuna Bolukbasi, M. Iskin

We consider a square optical lattice in two dimensions and study the effects of both the strength and symmetry of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman field on the ground-state, i.e., Mott-insulator (MI) and superfluid (SF), phases and phase diagram, i.e., MI-SF phase-transition boundary, of the two-component Bose-Hubbard model. In particular, based on a variational Gutzwiller ansatz, our numerical calculations show that the spin-orbit-coupled SF phase is a nonuniform (twisted) one, with its phase (but not the magnitude) of the order parameter modulating from site to site. Fully analytical insights into the numerical results are also given.
