Interaction-induced oscillations in correlated electron transport

Abstract

The correlated motion of electrons in a one-dimensional system with an externally applied longitudinal electric field is discussed. Within the tight-binding model we show that in addition to the well-known Bloch oscillations, the electron-electron interaction induces time-dependent oscillations of the mobility whose period depends on the strength and range of the coupling only. The oscillations involve transitions between bands of bound and unbound states. The case of two electrons is solved in detail and an extension of the results to more particles is discussed.

Bloch-Zener oscillations of strongly correlated electrons

Stefano Longhi

It is well known that an electron in a single-band tight-binding lattice coherently driven by an external dc electric field undergoes Bloch oscillations. In the framework of the extended Hubbard model, here it is shown theoretically that two strongly interacting electrons with on-site and nearest-neighbor site repulsion undergo a sequence of Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling, the so-called Bloch-Zener oscillations (BZOs), among different narrow bands formed by bound particle states. Such a kind of BZOs arise because of nearest-neighbor site particle interaction and are thus rather distinct than BZOs observed for a single electron in biperiodic lattices supporting two single-particle minibands.

Scattering induced current in a tight-binding band

Laurent Bruneau, Stephan De Bièvre, Claude‐Alain Pillet

In the single band tight-binding approximation, we consider the transport properties of an electron subject to a homogeneous static electric field. We show that repeated interactions of the electron with two-level systems in thermal equilibrium suppress the Bloch oscillations and induce a steady current, the statistical properties of which we study.

Frequency doubling of Bloch oscillations for interacting electrons in a static electric field

Wandearley S. Dias, Elton Malta Nascimento, M. L. Lyra +1 more

We study numerically the effect of the on-site Hubbard interaction $U$ on the dynamics of two electrons subjected to an external electric field and restricted to move in a linear chain with open boundaries. We solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation to follow the time evolution of an initially localized two-electron state. For electrons initially far apart, the wave packet develops Bloch oscillations whose characteristic frequency is in agreement with a semiclassical calculation. For initially close electrons in a singlet state, a frequency doubling sets up, which is more pronounced for intermediate couplings. We discuss this effect by revealing the opposite trends the electron-electron coupling produces on the wave-packet components corresponding to bounded and unbounded states.

Dynamics of two interacting electrons in Anderson-Hubbard chains with long-range correlated disorder: Effect of a static electric field

Wandearley S. Dias, Elton Malta Nascimento, M. L. Lyra +1 more

We investigate the influence of the on-site Hubbard interaction $U$ on the eigenstates and dynamics of two electrons restricted to move in a linear chain with long-range correlated disorder. We solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation to follow the time evolution of an initially localized Gaussian two-electron wave packet. In the regime of strongly correlated disorder, for which one-electron extended eigenstates emerge near the band center, the electron-electron coupling promotes the trapping of a finite portion of the wave packet. In the presence of a uniform electric field, the wave packet develops complex Bloch oscillations. The power spectrum of the centroid's velocity trace shows a splitting near the typical semiclassical Bloch frequency, as well as a frequency doubling phenomenon for intermediate couplings which is related to the bounded states components that are present in the wave packet. Finally, we show that localized and extended two-electron eigenstates coexist near the band center with the level spacing distribution showing a universal Poissonian form irrespective to the Hubbard coupling.

Correlated dynamics of three-particle bound states induced by emergent impurities in Bose-Hubbard model

Wenduo Zhao, Boning Huang, Yongguan Ke +1 more

Bound states, known as particles tied together and moving as a whole, are profound correlated effects induced by particle-particle interactions. While dimer-monomer bound states are manifested as a single particle attached to a dimer bound pair, it is still unclear about quantum walks and Bloch oscillations of dimer-monomer bound states. Here, we revisit three-particle bound states in the Bose-Hubbard model and find that interaction-induced impurities adjacent to bound pair and boundaries cause two kinds of bound states: one is dimer-monomer bound state and the other is bound edge state. In quantum walks, the spread velocity of dimer-monomer bound state is determined by the maximal group velocity of their energy band, which is much smaller than that in the single-particle case. In Bloch oscillations, the period of dimer-monomer bound states is one third of that in the single-particle case. Emergence of bound edge states also requires that interaction-induced defects are greater than the effective tunneling strength of three-particle bound state. Our work provides new insights to basic mechanics and collective dynamics of three-particle bound states.

Strong Correlation Effects and Localization in Metallic Systems

Amita Sharma

We have studied strong correlation effects and localization in metallic systems. Strong correlation effects and localization occurred in metallic systems due to strong electron-electron interactions and strong electron phonon coupling. Strong electron-phonon interactions have been found in such materials as cuprates, fullerides and manganites. The interplay of electronelectron and electron-phonon interactions in these correlated systems leaded to coexistence of or competition between various phases such as super conductivity, charge-density-wave or spin-density wave phases or formation of novel non Fermi liquid phases, polarons, bipolarons and so on. We have considered Holstein-Hubbard model for our work. The Holstein-Hubbard model provides on over simplified description of both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions, it retains to be the relevant ingredients of a system in which electrons experience simultaneously an instantaneous short range repulsion and a phononmediated retarded attraction. In spite of its formal simplicity, it is not exactly solvable even in one dimension. So quantum simulators of Fermi-Hubbard modes based on either fermionic atoms inoptical lattice or electrons in artificial quantum dot crystals have been used. In our work a classical analog simulator was theoretically proposed for the two site Holstein-Hubbard model based on light transport in engineered waveguide lattices, which is capable of reproducing the temporal dynamics of the quantum model in Fock space as spatial evolution in photonic lattice. We have found that in the strong correlation regime the periodic temporal dynamics exhibited by the Holstein-Hubbard Hamiltonian, related to the excitation Holstein polarons has been explained in terms of generalized Bloch oscillations of a single particle in a semi-infinite inhomogeneous tight binding lattice. Light transport in two dimensional photonic lattices simulated in Fock space the hopping dynamics of two correlated electrons on a one dimensional lattice and exploited to visualize such phenomena as correlated tunneling of bond electron-electron molecules and their coherent motion under the action of d.c. or a.c. fields. The obtained results were found in good agreement with previous results.
