Abstract

The finite temperature Green's function technique is used to calculate the energies and damping rates of the elementary excitations of homogeneous, dilute, spin-1 Bose gases below the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature in both the density and spin channels. For this purpose a self-consistent dynamical Hartree-Fock model is formulated, which takes into account the direct and exchange processes on equal footing by summing up certain classes of Feynman diagrams. The model is shown to satisfy the Goldstone theorem and to exhibit the hybridization of one-particle and collective excitations correctly. The results are applied to gases of ${}^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ and ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms.

Lifetime of Single-Particle Excitations in a Dilute Bose–Einstein Condensate at Zero Temperature

Kazumasa Tsutsui, Takafumi Kita

We study the lifetime of single-particle excitations in a dilute homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature based on a self-consistent perturbation expansion of satisfying Goldstone's theorem and conservation laws simultaneously. It is shown that every excitation for each momentum ${\bf p}$ should have a finite lifetime proportional to the inverse $a^{-1}$ of the $s$-wave scattering length $a$, instead of $a^{-2}$ for the normal state, due to a new class of Feynman diagrams for the self-energy that emerges upon condensation. We calculate the lifetime as a function of $|{\bf p}|$ approximately.

Collective Excitations in Spin-2 Bose-Einstein Condensates

Hou, Jing-Min, Tian Tian +1 more

The Green's functions and the correlation functions in spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperature are defined and the generalized Dyson-Beliaev equations are introduced. We discuss the spin conservation in z direction and decouple thre Green's functions and the generalized Dyson-Beliaev equations according to different spin conservations in z direction. The anomalous vertex functions are introduced and the self-energies are separated into the proper self-energies and the improper self-energies. The generalized Dyson-Beliaev equations are decoupled according to separation of the self-energies. We calculate the Green's functions step by step in the Bogoliubov approximation and discuss the collective excitations in spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates in the polar, ferromagnetic, and cyclic cases, respectively.

Finite-temperature excitations of a trapped Bose-Fermi mixture

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu

We present a detailed study of the low-lying collective excitations of a spherically trapped Bose-Fermi mixture at finite temperature in the collisionless regime. The excitation frequencies of the condensate are calculated self-consistently using the static Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation. The frequency shifts and damping rates due to the coupled dynamics of the condensate, noncondensate, and degenerate Fermi gas are also taken into account by means of the random-phase approximation and linear-response theory. In our treatment, the dipole excitation remains close to the bare trapping frequency for all temperatures considered, and thus is consistent with the generalized Kohn theorem. We discuss in some detail the behavior of monopole and quadrupole excitations as a function of the Bose-Fermi coupling. At nonzero temperatures we find that, as the mixture moves towards spatial separation with increasing Bose-Fermi coupling, the damping rate of the monopole (quadrupole) excitation increases (decreases). This provides us a useful signature to identify the phase transition of spatial separation.

Gapless mean-field theory of Bose-Einstein condensates

David A. W. Hutchinson, Keith R. Burnett, R. J. Dodd +6 more

We present a topical review of the development of finite-temperature field theories of Bose-Einstein condensation in weakly interacting atomic gases. We highlight the difficulties in obtaining a consistent finite-temperature theory that has a gapless excitation spectrum in accordance with Goldstone's theorem and which is free from both ultraviolet and infrared divergences. We present results from the two consistent theories developed so far. These are the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation and a many-body T -matrix approach which we have termed gapless-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (GHFB). Comparison with the available experimental results is made and the remaining difficulties are highlighted.

Conserving and gapless approximations for an inhomogeneous Bose gas at finite temperatures

Adam Griffin

We derive and discuss the equations of motion for the condensate and its fluctuations for a dilute, weakly interacting Bose gas in an external potential within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation. Account is taken of the depletion of the condensate and the anomalous Bose correlations, which are important at finite temperatures. We give a critical analysis of the self-consistent HFB approximation in terms of the Hohenberg-Martin classification of approximations (conserving vs gapless) and point out that the Popov approximation to the full HFB gives a gapless single-particle spectrum at all temperatures. The Beliaev second-order approximation is discussed as the spectrum generated by functional differentiation of the HFB single-particle Green's function. We emphasize that the problem of determining the excitation spectrum of a Bose-condensed gas (homogeneous or inhomogeneous) is difficult because of the need to satisfy several different constraints.
