Abstract

We introduce a new approximation scheme for evaluation of onset of decoherence at low temperatures in quantum systems interacting with environment. The approximation is argued to apply at short and intermediate times. It provides an approach complementary to Markovian approximations and appropriate for evaluation of quantum computing schemes.

Initial Decoherence of Open Quantum Systems

We present a new short-time approximation scheme for evaluation of decoher-ence. At low temperatures, the approximation is argued to apply at intermediate times as well. It then provides a tractable approach complementary to Markovian-type approximations, and appropriate for evaluation of deviations from pure states in quantum computing models. Studies of Short-Time Decoherence for Evaluation of Quantum Computer Designs

Vladimir Privman A, Denis Tolkunov

We review our recent results on short time approximations, with emphasis on applications for which the system-environment interactions involve a general non-Hermitian system operator and its conjugate. We evaluate the onset of decoherence at low temperatures in open quantum systems. The developed approach is complementary to Markovian approximations and appropriate for evaluation of quantum computing schemes. Example of a spin system coupled to a bosonic heat bath is discussed.

Models of short-time qubit decoherence

Dmitry Solenov, Vladimir Privman

We compare approaches to evaluation of decoherence at low temperatures in two-state quantum systems weakly coupled to the environment. By analyzing an exactly solvable model, we demonstrate that a non-Markovian approximation scheme yields good quality estimates of the reduced density matrix for time scales appropriate for evaluation of quantum computing designs.

Short-time decoherence for general system-environment interactions

Denis Tolkunov, Vladimir Privman A

A short-time approximation is developed for system-environmental bath mode interactions involving a general non-Hermitian system operator $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ and its conjugate ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}$ in order to evaluate the onset of decoherence at low temperatures in quantum systems interacting with the environment. The developed approach is complementary to Markovian approximations and appropriate for the evaluation of quantum computing schemes. An example of a spin system coupled to a bosonic heat bath via $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\propto}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\ensuremath{-}}$ is worked out in detail.

SHORT-TIME DECOHERENCE AND DEVIATION FROM PURE QUANTUM STATES

VLADIMIR PRIVMAN

In systems considered for quantum computing, i.e., for control of quantum dynamics with the goal of processing information coherently, decoherence and deviation from pure quantum states, are the main obstacles to error correction. At low temperatures, usually assumed in quantum computing designs, some of the accepted approaches to evaluation of relaxation mechanisms break down. We develop a new formalism for the estimation of decoherence at short times, appropriate for evaluation of quantum computing architectures.

Decoherence of Dynamically Manipulated Qubits

Vladimir Privman A, Dmitry Solenov

We summarize our results on decoherence for short-to intermediate-time dynamics of an externally controlled two-state quantum system—a qubit—interacting with thermal bosonic environment. The developed approximation schemes are illustrated for an adiabatic model with time-dependent gate control, and for a model with rotating-wave gate function.
