Thermodynamics of a trapped Bose-Fermi mixture

Abstract

By using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations within the Popov approximation, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of a dilute binary Bose-Fermi mixture confined in an isotropic harmonic trap. For mixtures with an attractive Bose-Fermi interaction, we find a sizable enhancement of the condensate fraction and of the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation with respect to the predictions for a pure interacting Bose gas. Conversely, the influence of the repulsive Bose-Fermi interaction is less pronounced. The possible relevance of our results in current experiments on trapped ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}{\ensuremath{-}}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ mixtures is discussed.

Critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation in trapped atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures

A. P. Albus, S. Giorgini, F. Illuminati +1 more

We calculate the shift in the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation for a dilute Bose-Fermi mixture confined by a harmonic potential, to lowest order in both the Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi coupling constans. The relativ importance of the effect on the critical temperature of the boson-fermion interactions is investigated as a function of the parameters of mixture. The possible relevance of the shift of the transition temperature in current experiments on trapped Bose-Fermi mixtures is discussed.

We calculate the shift in the critical temperature of Bose–Einstein condensation for a dilute Bose–Fermi mixture confined by a harmonic potential, to lowest order in both the Bose–Bose and Bose–Fermi coupling constants. The relative importance of the effect on the critical temperature of the boson–boson and boson–fermion interactions is investigated as a function of the parameters of the mixture. Scaling and Thermodynamics of a Trapped Bose-Condensed Gas

S. Giorgini, Лев П. Питаевский, S. Stringari

We investigate the thermodynamics of a Bose gas interacting with repulsive forces and confined in a harmonic trap. We show that the relevant parameters of the system (temperature, number $N$ of atoms, harmonic oscillator length, deformation of the trap, $s$-wave scattering length) fix its thermodynamic behavior in the large $N$ limit through two dimensionless scaling parameters. These are the reduced temperature $t\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}T/{T}_{c}^{0}$ and the ratio $\ensuremath{\eta}$ between the $T\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$ value of the chemical potential, evaluated in the Thomas-Fermi limit, and the critical temperature ${T}_{c}^{0}$ of the noninteracting model. The scaling functions relative to the condensate fraction, energy, chemical potential, and moment of inertia are calculated within the Popov approximation.

Condensate fraction and critical temperature of a trapped interacting Bose gas

S. Giorgini, Лев П. Питаевский, S. Stringari

By using a mean-field approach, based on the Popov approximation, we calculate the temperature dependence of the condensate fraction of an interacting Bose gas of N atoms confined in an anisotropic harmonic trap. For systems interacting with repulsive forces we find a significant decrease of the condensate fraction and of the critical temperature with respect to the predictions of the noninteracting model with the same value of N. An analytic result for the shift of the critical temperature holding to first order in the scattering length is also derived. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Finite-temperature effects on the collapse of trapped Bose-Fermi mixtures

Xia-Ji Liu, Michele Modugno, Hui Hu

By using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov theory, we present a detailed study of the mean-field stability of spherically trapped Bose-Fermi mixtures at finite temperature. We find that, by increasing the temperature, the critical particle number of bosons (or fermions) and the critical attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length increase, leading to a significant stabilization of the mixture.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperature

Shai Ronen, John L. Bohn

We study a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas with dipolar interactions, at finite temperature, using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation. An additional approximation involving the dipolar exchange interaction is made to facilitate the computation. We calculate the temperature dependence of the condensate fraction of a condensate confined in a cylindrically symmetric harmonic trap. We show that the biconcave-shaped condensates found in [Ronen et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 30406 (2007)] in certain pancake traps at zero temperature are also stable at finite temperature. Surprisingly, the dip in the central density of these structured condensates is actually enhanced at low finite temperatures. We explain this effect.
