Abstract

We investigate strong-coupling superfluidity in a uniform two-component gas of ultracold Fermi atoms attractively interacting via quasimolecular bosons associated with a Feshbach resonance. This interaction is tunable by the threshold energy $2\ensuremath{\nu}$ of the Feshbach resonance, becoming large as $2\ensuremath{\nu}$ is decreased (relative to $2{\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{\mathrm{F}},$ where ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{\mathrm{F}}$ is the Fermi energy of one component). In recent work, we showed that the enhancement of this tunable pairing interaction naturally leads to the BCS-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover, where the character of the superfluid phase transition changes from the BCS type to a BEC of composite bosons consisting of preformed Cooper-pairs and Feshbach-induced molecules. In this paper, we extend our previous work and study both the quasiparticles and the collective dynamics of the superfluid phase below the phase-transition temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{c}},$ limiting ourselves to a uniform gas. We show how the superfluid order parameter changes from the Cooper-pair amplitude $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ to the square root of the number of condensed molecules $({\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{\mathrm{m}})$ associated with the Feshbach resonance, as the threshold energy $2\ensuremath{\nu}$ is lowered. In the intermediate coupling regime, the superfluidity is shown to be characterized by an order parameter consisting of a superposition of $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ and ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{\mathrm{m}}.$ We also discuss the Goldstone mode associated with superfluidity, and show how its character smoothly changes from the Anderson-Bogoliubov phonon in the BCS regime to the Bogoliubov phonon in the BEC regime in the BCS-BEC crossover. The velocity of this Goldstone phonon mode is shown to strongly depend on the value of $2\ensuremath{\nu}.$ We also show that this Goldstone mode appears as a resonance in the spectrum of the density-density correlation function, which is experimentally accessible.

Superfluid transition temperature in a trapped gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance

Yutaro OHASHI, Adam Griffin

We investigate strong-coupling effects on the superfluid phase transition in a gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance. The Feshbach resonance describes a composite quasiboson that can give rise to an additional pairing interaction between the Fermi atoms. This attractive interaction becomes stronger as the threshold energy $2\ensuremath{\nu}$ of the Feshbach resonance two-particle bound state is lowered. In a recent paper, we showed that in the uniform Fermi gas, this tunable pairing interaction naturally leads to a crossover from a BCS state to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of the Nozi\`eres and Schmitt-Rink kind, in which the BCS-type superfluid phase transition continuously changes into the BEC type as the threshold energy is decreased. In this paper, we extend our previous work by including the effect of a harmonic trap potential, treated within the local-density approximation. We also give results for both weak and strong coupling to the Feshbach resonance. We show that the BCS-BEC crossover phenomenon strongly modifies the shape of the atomic density profile at the superfluid phase-transition temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{c}},$ reflecting the change of the dominant particles going from Fermi atoms to composite bosons. In the BEC regime, these composite bosons are shown to first appear well above ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}.$ We also discuss the ``phase diagram'' above ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ as a function of the tunable threshold energy $2\ensuremath{\nu}.$ We introduce a characteristic temperature ${T}^{*}(2\ensuremath{\nu})$ describing the effective crossover in the normal phase from a Fermi gas of atoms to a gas of stable molecules.

Single-particle excitations in a trapped gas of Fermi atoms in the BCS-BEC crossover region

Yoji Ohashi, Adam Griffin

We investigate the single-particle properties at $T=0$ of a trapped superfluid gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance. A tunable pairing interaction associated with the Feshbach resonance leads to the BCS--Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover, where the character of superfluidity continuously changes from the BCS-type to a BEC of composite bosons. In this paper, we extend our previous work for a uniform superfluid Fermi gas [Y. Ohashi and A. Griffin, Phys. Rev. A 67, 063612 (2003)] to include the effect of a harmonic trap. We do not use the local density approximation (LDA), but directly solve the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) coupled equations. While our explicit numerical solutions are for a weak (narrow) Feshbach resonance, we argue that the single-particle BdG excitation spectrum will exhibit the same features for a strong (broad) Feshbach resonance. Using these equations, we find self-consistent values for the spatially dependent local density $n(\mathbf{r})$ as well as the composite BCS order parameter $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(\mathbf{r})$, the latter describing both the Cooper-pair and molecular condensate contributions. Using these results, we calculate the single-particle density of states in the crossover region, and from this determine the true single-particle energy gap $({E}_{g})$ of the trapped Fermi superfluid. This is associated with the in-gap (or Andreev) states in the low-density region at the edge of the trap. We calculate the laser-induced tunneling current $I(\ensuremath{\omega})$ into another hyperfine state, as measured in recent rf spectroscopy experiments. This rf spectrum gives a direct probe of the quasiparticle spectrum. We show how the high-energy part of $I(\ensuremath{\omega})$ gives information about $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(r=0)$ at the center of the trap (which is comparable to the Fermi energy ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{F}$ in the crossover region). We show that $I(\ensuremath{\omega})$ is very dependent on the spatial profile of the pair potential $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}(r)$ that is used. We also emphasize that the narrow ``unpaired atom" peak in the rf data gives information about ${E}_{g}$ and the low-energy $(⪡{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{F})$ in-gap states of a Fermi superfluid. While our calculations are limited to $T=0$, we use them to discuss the recent data of Chin et al. and the LDA calculations of T\"orm\"a and co-workers. The LDA, while useful, can lead to an incorrect physical picture of the low-density surface region of the Fermi superfluid.

BCS-BEC CROSSOVER IN A SUPERFLUID FERMI GAS

Yoji Ohashi

We discuss the superfluid phase transition in a gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance. A tunable pairing interaction associated with the Feshbach resonance is shown to naturally lead to the BCS-BEC crossover, where the character of superfluidity continuously changes from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) type to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of tightly bound molecules, as one decreases the threshold energy 2ν of the Feshbach resonance. We also discuss effects of a trap, as well as the p-wave BCS-BEC crossover adjusted by a p-wave Feshbach resonance.

Superfluid properties of an ultracold Fermi gas with an orbital Feshbach resonance in the BCS-BEC crossover region

Taro Kamihori, Daichi Kagamihara, Yoji Ohashi

We theoretically investigate the superfluid properties of a two-band gas of $^{173}\mathrm{Yb}$ Fermi atoms with an orbital Feshbach resonance (OFR). To describe the BCS-BEC crossover region, we include superfluid fluctuations caused by interband and intraband pairing interactions associated with OFR by extending the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozi\`eres and Schmitt-Rink to the two-band case below the superfluid phase transition temperature; however, the effects of an experimentally inaccessible deep bound state are removed to model a real $^{173}\mathrm{Yb}$ Fermi gas near OFR. We show that the condensate fraction in the upper closed channel gradually becomes smaller than that in the lower open channel as one moves from the strong- to the weak-coupling regime, because the OFR-pairing mechanism tunes the interaction strengths by adjusting the energy difference between the two bands. However, even when the closed-channel band is much higher in energy than the open-channel band in the weak-coupling regime, the magnitude of the superfluid order parameter in the closed channel is found to be still comparable to that in the open channel. As the reason for this, we point out a pair-tunneling effect by the OFR-induced interband interaction. In addition to these superfluid quantities, we also examine collective modes, such as the Goldstone mode, the Schmid (Higgs) mode, and Leggett mode, to clarify how they appear in the spectral weights of pair-correlation functions in each band. Since the realization of a multiband superfluid Fermi gas is a crucial issue in cold Fermi gas physics, our results would contribute to the basic understanding of this type of Fermi superfluid in the BCS-BEC crossover region.

BCS-BEC Crossover in a Gas of Fermi Atoms with a Feshbach Resonance

Yoji Ohashi, Adam Griffin

We discuss the BCS-BEC crossover in a degenerate Fermi gas of two hyperfine states interacting close to a Feshbach resonance. We show that, by including fluctuation contributions to the free energy similar to that considered by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink, the character of the superfluid phase transition continuously changes from the BCS-type to the BEC-type, as the threshold of the quasimolecular band is lowered. In the BEC regime, the superfluid phase transition is interpreted in terms of molecules associated with both the Feshbach resonance and Cooper pairing.

Collective modes and stability of Bose-Fermi mixtures with a BCS-BEC crossover

Hiroyuki Shibata, Nobuhiko Yokoshi, Susumu Kurihara

We investigate an ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture with a Feshbach resonance between two hyperfine states of fermions. Using a functional integral method, we calculate collective modes associated with fermion pairs and bosons in the superfluid phase. We derive a stability condition of the mixtures that is valid in the entire region of the BCS-BEC crossover. This stability condition, which smoothly connects the well-known results obtained in both the BCS and Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) limits, shows that sufficiently strong fermion-boson (FB) interactions destabilize the mixtures. In order to investigate the consequence of this instability, we study the ground-state energy of both the uniformly mixed and the phase-separated states. We find that FB repulsion induces a phase separation, whereas FB attraction should cause a collapse of the mixture. The possibilities for the experimental observation of such instabilities are also discussed.
