Four-wave mixing in degenerate Fermi gases: Beyond the undepleted pump approximation

Abstract

We analyze the full nonlinear dynamics of the four-wave mixing between an incident beam of fermions and a fermionic density grating. We find that when the number of atoms in the beam is comparable to the number of atoms forming the grating, the dephasing of that grating, which normally leads to the decay of its amplitude, is suppressed. Instead, the density grating and the beam density exhibit large nonlinear coupled amplitude oscillations. In this case, four-wave mixing can persist for much longer times compared to the case of negligible back action. We also evaluate the efficiency of the four-wave mixing and show that it can be enhanced by producing an initial density grating with an amplitude that is less than the maximum value. These results indicate that efficient four-wave mixing in fermionic alkali gases should be experimentally observable.

Atomic Four-Wave Mixing: Fermions versus Bosons

M. G. Moore, Pierre Meystre

We compare four-wave mixing in quantum degenerate gases of bosonic and fermionic atoms. We find that matter-wave gratings formed from either bosonic or fermionic atoms can in principle exhibit nearly identical Bragg scattering and four-wave mixing properties. This implies that effects such as coherent matter-wave amplification and superradiance can occur in degenerate Fermi gases. This effect is due to constructive many-particle quantum interferences, which in the boson case are interpreted as "Bose enhancement."

Dynamics of fermionic four-wave mixing

H. Christ, Christopher P. Search, Pierre Meystre

We study the dynamics of a beam of fermions diffracted off a density grating formed by fermionic atoms in the limit of a large grating. An exact description of the system in terms of particle-hole operators is developed. We use a combination of analytical and numerical methods to quantitatively explore the Raman-Nath and the Bragg regimes of diffraction. We discuss the limits in diffraction efficiency resulting from the dephasing of the grating due to the distribution of energy states occupied by the fermions. We propose several methods to overcome these limits, including the technique of ``atom echoes.''

Four Wave Mixing (FWM) in alkali atom vapors - Numerical method

Four Wave Mixing (FWM) in alkali atom vapors exists only under very specific conditions, it is necessary that density of alkali vapor, intensities and frequencies of pump and probe laser beams, have their values within rather narrow ranges. FWM is nonlinear phenomena that can be regarded as scattering of laser beams on nonlinear index grating, generated by the same laser beams. Such scattering results in conversion of two pump photons to additional probe photon, and to conjugate photon at frequency (much) different form the pump and probe frequencies. The interaction of coherent radiation with atomic pairs was analyzed using the Maxwell- Bloch equations. Codes have been developed to numerically solve this system, including the Doppler effect and relaxation processes. Added to them are the effects created by the quantum treatment of the electromagnetic field, the so-called Langevin equation. This created the conditions for the theoretical analysis of quantum effects such as the appearance of trapped states under conditions that provide four-wave mixing of coherent radiation. Crossed-beam optically degenerate wave mixing with bosonic quantum gases

Chengjie Zhu, Yan Li, L. Deng

Highly efficient, optical-degenerate wave-mixing involving bosonic quantum gas is studied using a crossed-beam geometry. We show a very large enhancement due to nonlinear gain from a matter-optical wave-mixing process involving four photons and two matter-wave excitations. Under suitable conditions with a red-detuned pump field this optically degenerate, four-photon process can be stronger than the traditional two-photon inelastic light-scattering mechanism, leading to strong nonlinear growth of the observed matter-wave scattering. This optically degenerate four-wave mixing is independent of other enhancements arising from bosonic stimulations. More importantly, this highly efficient, backward degenerate wave generation and growth process does not have a correspondence in thermal gases in nonlinear optics.

Analysis Of Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing At Large Pump Signals

Michel Piché, Claude Paré, Pierre‐André Bélanger

The exact theory of degenerate four-wave mixing in a Kerr-like medium in the Bragg scattering regime is used to study the reflectivity of phase-conjugate mirrors pumped by intense laser beams. The analysis takes into account pump depletion, nonlinear phase modulation and the relaxation time of the nonlinearity. The steady-state response exhibits multivalued reflectivity, hysteresis and potential bistability; however, the transient response shows that at most one value of the phase-conjugate reflectivity is stable. Periodic or chaotic pulsations are predicted beyond threshold values of pump intensity. The onset of a natural oscillation in the Kerr-like medium is also predicted in the absence of a continuous probe beam; the resulting field amplitude is stable and weakly sensitive upon the presence of external noise.

Four-wave mixing in nonlinear interferometer Fabry-Perot with saturable absorbers

Omar A. Ormachea, O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik +3 more

In this work the different schemes of propagation and interaction of the light beams in nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer have been studied theoretically and experimentally. Degenerate and non-degenerate four-wave mixing have been realized in the cavity of Fabry-Perot type using Rhodamine-6G dye and polymethine dye 3274U solution as saturable absorber. The diffraction efficiency of intracavity dynamic grating has been studied in dependence on intensity of interacting beams and parameters of resonator. The theoretical model of the processes of intracavity degenerate and non-degenerate four-wave mixing has been developed and applied to the analysis of the efficiency of light beams conversion by mean of Bragg diffraction from intracavity dynamic gratings. For theoretical description of typical experimental situations we used the round-trip model of nonlinear interferometer adapted for the geometry of degenerate four-wave mixing, which can be realized in the scheme of symmetrical oblique incidence of pump, signal and probe beams to the front and back mirrors of cavity.
