Abstract

Weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice are studied by angle-resolved functional renormalization group. Upon renormalization the interaction starts to depend on monienta and has pole-like solutions near the doping-dependent critical scale. Near half-filling this critical scale is the pseudogap temperature T*. In the overdoped regime the critical scale is the mean-field like critical temperature for d-wave superconductivity.

Weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice: Renormalization-group theory

Dražen Zanchi, Heinz J. Schulz

We formulate the exact Wilsonian renormalization group for a system of interacting fermions on a lattice. The flow equations for all vertices of the Wilson effective action are expressed in the form of the Polchinski equation. The advantage of this renormalization scheme is that the flow itself has a physical interpretation, i.e., the cutoff has the meaning of the temperature. We apply this method to the Hubbard model on a square lattice using both zero- and finite-temperature methods. Truncating the effective action at the sixth term in fermionic variables and neglecting self-energy renormalization, we obtain the one-loop functional renormalization equations for the effective interaction. We find the temperature of the instability ${T}_{c}^{\mathrm{RG}}$ as a function of doping. Furthermore we calculate the renormalization of the angle-resolved correlation functions for the superconductivity (SC) and for the antiferromagnetism (AF). The dominant component of the SC correlations is of the type ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}},$ while the AF fluctuations are of the type s. Following the strength of both SC and AF fluctuations along the instability line, we obtain the phase diagram. The temperature ${T}_{c}^{\mathrm{RG}}$ can be identified with the crossover temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{co}}$ found in the underdoped regime of the high-temperature superconductors, while in the overdoped regime ${T}_{c}^{\mathrm{RG}}$ corresponds to the superconducting critical temperature.

Phase diagrams of the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model: a comprehensive functional renormalization group study

Arooj Aslam, Yuan-Yuan Xiang, Cheng-Wei Li +2 more

Abstract Using the singular-mode functional renormalization group method, we studied the doping-dependent phase diagram of the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model on square lattice. At half-filling, a variety of states strongly compete, including spin-density wave, charge-density wave, phase separation, as well as d -wave and s -wave superconductivity (SC). Upon electron doping, the system exhibits a strong preference for superconducting states. At slight dopings, the spin-density wave phase is strongly suppressed, and d -wave SC region expands into positive U , V region. At moderate dopings, a region of degenerated p -wave superconductivities emerge for positive U and negative V . Our results demonstrate how doping tunes the dominant fluctuations, suppressing density waves and stabilizing unconventional superconducting states in two dimensions.

Superconducting instabilities of the non-half-filled Hubbard model in two dimensions

Dražen Zanchi, Heinz J. Schulz

The problem of weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice is formulated in terms of a one-loop renormalization group. Starting from the action for the entire Brillouin zone we reduce successively the cutoff \ensuremath{\Lambda} about the Fermi surface and follow the renormalization of the coupling U as a function of three energy-momenta. We calculate the intrinsic temperature scale ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{co}}$ where the renormalization-group flow crosses over from the regime (\ensuremath{\Lambda}>${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{co}}$) where the electron-electron (e-e) and electron-hole (e-h) terms are equally important to the regime (\ensuremath{\Lambda}${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{co}}$) where only the e-e term plays a role. In the low-energy regime only the pairing interaction V is marginally relevant, containing contributions from all renormalization-group steps of the regime \ensuremath{\Lambda}>${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{co}}$. We identify the most attractive eigenvalue ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{min}}$ of ${\mathit{V}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}={\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{co}}}$. At low filling, ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{min}}$ corresponds to the ${\mathit{B}}_{2}$ representation (${\mathit{d}}_{\mathit{xy}}$ symmetry), while near half filling the strongest attraction occurs in the ${\mathit{B}}_{1}$ representation (${\mathit{d}}_{{\mathit{x}}^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathit{y}}^{2}}$ symmetry). In the direction of the van Hove singularities, the order parameter shows peaks with increasing strength as one approaches half filling. We also give a possible interpretation of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments trying to determine the symmetry of the order parameter in the high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ compound ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}$${\mathrm{CaCu}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{8}$. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Pseudogaps in strongly correlated metals: A generalized dynamical mean-field theory approach

Michael V. Sadovskii, I. A. Nekrasov, É. Z. Kuchinskiǐ +2 more

We generalize the dynamical-mean field (DMFT) approximation by including into the DMFT equations some length scale $\ensuremath{\xi}$ via a momentum dependent external self-energy ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{\mathbf{k}}$. This external self-energy describes nonlocal dynamical correlations induced by the short-ranged collective spin density wave--like antiferromagnetic spin (or the charge density wave--like charge) fluctuations. At high enough temperatures these fluctuations can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with a finite correlation length. This generalized $\mathrm{DMFT}+{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{\mathbf{k}}$ approach is used for the numerical solution of the weakly doped one-band Hubbard model with repulsive Coulomb interaction on a square lattice with the nearest and the next nearest neighbor hopping. The effective single impurity problem in this generalized $\mathrm{DMFT}+{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{\mathbf{k}}$ is solved by the numerical renormalization group. Both types of the strongly correlated metals, namely: (i) The doped Mott insulator and (ii) the case of the bandwidth $W\ensuremath{\lesssim}U$ ($U$---value of the local Coulomb interaction) are considered. The densities of states, the spectral functions, and the angle resolved photoemission spectra calculated within the $\mathrm{DMFT}+{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{\mathbf{k}}$ show a pseudogap formation near the Fermi level of the quasiparticle band.

Angle-resolved loss of Landau quasiparticles in 2D Hubbard model

Dražen Zanchi

The problem of weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice is studied theoretically. A simple renormalization group scheme for the angle-resolved weight Z of the quasiparticles at the Fermi surface is presented and applied to the Hubbard model. Upon reduction of the cutoff the Fermi surface is progressively destroyed from the van Hove points toward the zone diagonals. Due to the renormalized Z, divergences of both antiferromagnetic and superconducting correlation functions are suppressed at the critical scale, where the interactions diverge.
