Abstract

We study the effect of going beyond the Gross-Pitaevskii theory on the frequencies of collective oscillations of a trapped Bose gas in the large gas parameter regime. We go beyond the Gross-Pitaevskii regime by including a higher-order term in the interatomic correlation energy. To calculate the frequencies we employ the sum-rule approach of many-body response theory coupled with a variational method for the determination of ground-state properties. We show that going beyond the Gross-Pitaevskii approximation introduces significant corrections to the collective frequencies of the compressional mode.

Properties of trapped Bose gas with vortices in large-gas-parameter regime

Arup Banerjee, Manoranjan P. Singh

We study the properties of vortex states of a trapped Bose gas in the large-gas-parameter regime. To test the validity of the Gross-Pitaevskii theory in this regime for vortex states, we compare the results of the Gross-Pitaevskii and the modified Gross-Pitaevskii calculations for the total energy, chemical potential, density profile, and frequency shift of the quadrupole modes of the collective oscillations of a harmonically trapped condensate carrying a single quantized vortex. We find that in the large-gas-parameter regime, two calculations give substantially different results for all the properties mentioned above.

A study of trapped Bose gas beyond mean-field theory

Arup Banerjee, Manoranjan P. Singh

We study the ground-state properties of dilute Bose gas confined to both isotropic and anisotropic traps to assess the accuracy of Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) theory. To go beyond GP approximation we use Huang-Yang theory of interatomic interaction energy for hard-sphere Bose gas and use a variational method to solve the resulting modified GP equation. We also make an analytic estimate of the corrections due to higher-order terms in the interatomic interaction energy. We find that the corrections are of the order of 1 percent. However, there is a qualitative change in the density profile due to presence of logarithimic term in the interaction energy for large N (number of atoms)

Ground-state properties of a trapped Bose gas beyond the mean-field approximation

Arup Banerjee, Manoranjan P. Singh

We study the effect of interatomic correlations beyond the mean-field approximation on the ground-state properties of a trapped Bose gas interacting through a repulsive potential. To this end we employ a variational procedure that is based on the energy functional derived, in the local-density approximation, using the low-density expansion for the ground-state energy of the homogeneous gas. We also make analytic estimates of the corrections due to the higher-order terms in the expansion. We find that corrections are of the order of $1%.$ However, there is a qualitative change in the density profile for large N (number of atoms) due to presence of a logarithmic term in the expansion.

Beyond the Gross-Pitaevskii approximation: Local density versus correlated basis approach for trapped bosons

Adelchi Fabrocini, A. Polls

We study the ground state of a system of Bose hard spheres trapped in an isotropic harmonic potential to investigate the effect of the interatomic correlations and the accuracy of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We compare a local-density approximation, based on the energy functional derived from the low-density expansion of the energy of the uniform hard-sphere gas, and a correlated wave-function approach, which explicitly introduces the correlations induced by the potential. Both higher-order terms in the low-density expansion, beyond Gross-Pitaevskii, and explicit dynamical correlations have effects of the order of percent when the number of trapped particles becomes similar to that attained in recent experiments $(N\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{7}).$

Collective excitations of the hybrid atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

Moumita Gupta, Krishna Rai Dastidar

We investigate the low-energy excitations of the spherically and axially trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a molecular Bose gas by coherent Raman transitions. We apply the sum-rule approach of many-body response theory to derive the low-lying collective excitation frequencies of the hybrid atom-molecular system. The atomic and molecular ground-state densities obtained in Gross-Pitaevskii and modified Gross-Pitaevskii (including the higher order Lee-Huang-Yang term in interatomic interaction) approaches are used to find out the individual energy components and hence the excitation frequencies. We obtain different excitation energies for different angular momenta and study their characteristic dependence on the effective Raman detuning, the scattering length for atom-atom interaction, and the intensities of the coupling lasers. We show that the inclusion of the higher-order nonlinear interatomic interaction in modified Gross-Pitaevskii approach introduces significant corrections to the ground-state properties and the excitation frequencies both for axially and spherically trapped coupled $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ condensate system with the increase in the $s$-wave scattering length (for peak gas-parameter $\ensuremath{\geqslant}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$). It has been shown that the excitation frequencies decrease with the increase in the effective Raman detuning as well as the $s$-wave scattering length, whereas excitation frequencies increase with the increase in the atom-molecular coupling strength. The frequencies in modified Gross-Pitaevskii approximation exhibit an upward trend after a certain value of scattering length and also largely deviate from the Gross-Pitaevskii results with the increase in $s$-wave scattering length. The strong dependence of excitation frequencies on the laser intensities used for Raman transitions manifests the role of atom-molecular coupling strength on the control of collective excitations. The collective excitation frequencies for the hybrid atom-molecular BEC differ significantly from the excitation frequencies of a pure atomic BEC system when the atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency increases due to the decrease in the effective Raman detuning and increase in the atom-molecule coupling strength.

Collective oscillations of a one-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein gas

Chiara Menotti, S. Stringari

Starting from the hydrodynamic equations of superfluids, we calculate the frequencies of the collective oscillations of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein gas for various one-dimensional configurations at zero temperature. These include the mean-field regime described by Gross-Pitaevskii theory and the beyond-mean-field regime at small densities described by the Lieb-Liniger theory. The relevant combinations of the physical parameters governing the transition between the different regimes as well as the conditions of applicability of the hydrodynamic equations are discussed.
