Abstract

An SU(4) model of high-temperature superconductivity and antiferromagnetism has recently been proposed. The SO(5) group employed by Zhang [Science 275, 1089 (1997)] is embedded in this SU(4) as a subgroup, suggesting a connection between our SU(4) model and the Zhang SO(5) model. In order to understand the relationship between the the two models, we have used generalized coherent states to analyze the nature of the SO(5) subgroup. By constructing coherent-state energy surfaces, we demonstrate explicitly that the $\mathrm{SU}(4)\ensuremath{\supset}\mathrm{SO}(5)$ symmetry can be interpreted as a critical dynamical symmetry interpolating between superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases, and that this critical dynamical symmetry has many similarities to critical dynamical symmetries identified previously in other fields of physics. More generally, we demonstrate with this example that the mathematical techniques associated with generalized coherent states may have powerful applications in condensed-matter physics because they provide a clear connection between microscopic many-body theories and their broken-symmetry approximate solutions. In addition, these methods may be interpreted as defining the most general Bogoliubov transformation subject to a Lie group symmetry constraint, thus providing a mathematical connection between algebraic formulations and the language of quasiparticle theory. Finally, we suggest that the identification of the SO(5) symmetry as a critical dynamical symmetry implies deep algebraic connections between high-temperature superconductors and seemingly unrelated phenomena in other field of physics.

SU(4) Model of High-Temperature Superconductivity: Manifestation of Dynamical Symmetry in Cuprates

Yang Sun

The mechanism that leads to high‐temperature superconductivity in cuprates remains an open question despite intense study for nearly two decades. Here, we introduce an SU(4) model for cuprate systems having many similarities to dynamical symmetries known to play an important role in nuclear structure physics and in elementary particle physics. Analytical solutions in three dynamical symmetry limits of this model are found: an SO(4) limit associated with antiferromagnetic order; an SU(2) limit that may be interpreted as a d‐wave pairing condensate; and an SO(5) limit that may be interpreted as a doorway state between the antiferromagnetic order and the superconducting order. It is demonstrated that with a slightly broken SO(5) but under constraint of the parent SU(4) symmetry, the model is capable of describing the rich physics that is crucial in explaining why cuprate systems that are antiferromagnetic Mott insulators at half filling become superconductors through hole doping.

Boson Realization of the SU(4) Model of High-Temperature Superconductivity

Jan Dobeš

The SU(4) algebraic model of high-temperature superconductivity is studied employing the boson mapping techniques. The bosonization of the model enables us to get exact numerical solution of the model. The order parameters are discussed. The situation close to the SO(5) dynamical symmetry limit is interpreted as a modelling case for the behaviour of $D$-wave superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases in cuprates.

From Antiferromagnetism to Superconductivity: Numerical Evidence for SO(5) Symmetry

R. Eder, Werner R. Hanke, S. C. Zhang

In this work, we present numerical results which support SO(5) symmetry as a concept unifying superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the high-temperature superconductors. Using exact cluster diagonalization, we verify the recently proposed SO(5) multiplet structures for a widely used microscopic model, the t-J model. Our results show that the d-wave superconducting ground states away from half-filling are obtained from the higher spin states at half-filling through SO(5) rotations, that the dominant low energy resonance in the dynamical spin correlation function corresponds to a `pi-resonance' in the entire low doping region, and that the SO(5) symmetry is robust against inclusion of longer ranged Coulomb repulsion and next-nearest neighbor hopping.

Dynamics of an SO(5)-symmetric ladder model

R. Eder, Ansgar Dorneich, M. G. Zacher +2 more

We discuss properties of a recently proposed exactly SO(5)-symmetric ladder model. In the strong coupling limit we demonstrate how the SO(3)-symmetric description of spin ladders in terms of bond bosons can be upgraded to an SO(5)-symmetric bond-boson model, which provides a particularly simple example for the concept of SO(5) symmetry. Based on this representation we show that antiferromagnetism and superconductivity can be understood as condensation of either magnetic or charged bosons into a resonating-valence-bond vacuum. We identify exact eigenstates of a finite cluster with general multiplets of the SO(5) group, and present numerical results for the single particle, spin and charge spectra of the SO(5)-symmetric model and identify ``fingerprints'' of SO(5) symmetry in these. In particular we show that SO(5) symmetry implies a ``generalized rigid band behavior'' of the photoemission spectrum, i.e., spectra for the doped case are rigorously identical to spectra for spin-polarized states at half filling.

Exact Realization of SO(5) Symmetry in Extended Hubbard Models

Christopher L. Henley

Zhang recently conjectured an approximate SO(5) symmetry relating antiferromagnetic and superconducting states in high- ${T}_{c}$ cuprates. Here, an exact SO(5) symmetry is implemented in a generalized Hubbard model (with long-range interactions) on a lattice. The possible relation to a more realistic extended Hubbard Hamiltonian is discussed.

Hubbard model with SU(4) symmetry

Eugene Pivovarov

In the model considered, the nonlocal interaction of the fermions in different sublattices of a bipartite lattice is introduced. It can also be regarded as local interaction of fermions with opposite ``hypercharge''. The corresponding term in the Hamiltonian is SU(4)-invariant and appears to be the most tractable version of the SO(5)-invariant model that unifies antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting order parameters. The model has been studied primarily in the weak interaction limit and in the mean field approximation. Near the half-filling the antiferromagnetic critical temperature has a peak. However, the superconducting transition takes place when the Fermi surface crosses the area where the density of states is of order of inverse coupling coefficient. Thus, in mean-field approximation, there exist an interval of values of the chemical potential, for which the system is a superconductor for arbitrary high temperatures. The temperature dependence of specific heat, Hall coefficient, and DC conductivity in the normal phase agrees with that experimentally observed in high-$T_c$ cuprates.
