We study the anisotropic Heisenberg
(XYZ) spin-1/2 chain placed in a magnetic field pointing along the x axis. We use bosonization and a renormalization group analysis to show that the model has a nontrivial fixed point at a certain value of the
XY anisotropy a and the magnetic field h. Hence there is a line of critical points in the
(a,h) plane on which the system is gapless, even though the Hamiltonian has no continuous symmetry. The quantum critical line corresponds to a spin-flip transition; it separates two gapped phases in one of which the
Z2 symmetry of the Hamiltonian is broken. Our study has a bearing on one of the transitions of the axial next-nearest neighbor Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field. We also discuss the properties of the model when the magnetic field is increased further, in particular, the disorder line on which the ground state is a direct product of single spin states.
The spin-1/2 quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a transverse random magnetic field parallel to the z axis is numerically studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The dependence of the spontaneous magnetization and the energy gap on both the strength of the random magnetic field and the factor of anisotropy is determined. The critical line for the order-disorder phase transition is obtained and the resulting phase diagram is drawn. Our results are compatible with the fact that models with different factors of anisotropy fall within the same universality class as the quantum Ising model in a transverse random field.
We present a study of
XYZ Heisenberg spin-
21 chain, along with its variant (
XY Heisenberg spin-
21 Hamiltonian), under a transverse magnetic field. It reveals from our study that two competitive massive phases are separated by a gapless line (critical line). We find in our analysis that the critical points (trivial and nontrivial) are non-Gaussian in nature. There is no phase crossover owing to the change of the critical point from the trivial to the nontrivial one. There is no evidence of magnetization plateau, however the system is in the Ising criticality. The positive and negative values of umklapp-like scattering favor a short range antiferromagnetic order because of the
XY anisotropy and the transverse field, respectively. Higher value of Luttinger liquid parameter
(K) also favors the short range antiferromagnetic order due to the in-plane exchange anisotropy.

We revisit the phase diagram of the dimerized XXZ spin-
21 chain with nearest-neighbor couplings which was studied numerically in Phys. Rev. B 106, L201106 (2022). The model has isotropic
XY couplings which have a uniform value and
ZZ couplings which have a dimerized form, with strengths
Ja and
Jb on alternate bonds. We find a rich phase diagram in the region of positive
Ja, Jb. We provide a detailed understanding of the different phases and associated quantum phase transitions using a combination of mean-field theory, low-energy effective Hamiltonians, renormalization group calculations employing the technique of bosonization, and numerical calculations using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The phase diagram consists of two Ising paramagnetic phases called IPM
0 and IPM
π, and a phase with Ising Neel order called IN; all these phases are gapped. The phases IPM
0 and IPM
π are separated by a gapless phase transition line given by
0≤Ja=Jb≤1 which is described by a conformal field theory with central charge
c=1. There are two gapless phase transition lines separating IPM
0 from IN and IPM
π from IN; these are described by conformal field theories with
c=21 corresponding to quantum Ising transitions. The
c=1 line bifurcates into the two
c=21 lines at the point
Ja=Jb=1; the shape of the bifurcation is found analytically using RG calculations. A symmetry analysis shows that IPM
0 is a topologically trivial phase while IPM
π is a time-reversal symmetry-protected topological phase (SPT) with spin-
21 states at the two ends of an open system. The numerical results obtained by the DMRG method are in good agreement with the analytical results. Finally we propose experimental platforms for testing our results.
The finite field para-ferrimagnetic phase transition in the axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model is studied by using the linear perturbation real space renormalization group transformation. The method is examined in systems of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Ising chains coupled by ferromagnetic interactions in the longitudinal field. As one would expect, the external field in the first case destroys the continuous phase transition and in the second shifts the critical point toward a lower temperature according to the square law. For the ferromagnetic chains coupled by the competing interchain nearest-neighbor J(1) < 0 and next-nearest-neighbor J(2) < 0 interactions, the external field changes the character of the phase transition from continuous to discontinuous. However, it has been found that for the ratio J(2)/J(1) around 0.5 there is a critical value of the field for which an isolated critical point exists. The temperature dependences of the specific heat for several values of J(2)/J(1) and the external field are presented.
