Abstract

We investigate low-energy dynamical properties of one-dimensional multicomponent quantum liquids with the short-range interaction as well as the $1/x$-type long-range interaction. By calculating the single-particle spectrum and the dynamical spin susceptibility by means of the bosonization method, we discuss how the orbital degeneracy and the band splitting affect the dynamical response functions. The effect of the long-range interaction is also addressed. Although the long-range interaction suppresses charge fluctuations, it effectively enhances spin fluctuations via the formation of the Wigner crystal.

Dynamic correlations of the spinless Coulomb Luttinger liquid

Yasha Gindikin, Vladimir A. Sablikov

The dynamic density response function, structure factor, and spectral function of a Luttinger liquid with Coulomb interaction are studied with the emphasis on the short-range electron correlations. The Coulomb interaction changes dramatically the density response function as compared to the case of the short-ranged interaction. The coordinate dependence of the density response is smoothing with time, and the oscillatory structure appears. However, the spectral functions remain qualitatively the same. The dynamic structure factor contains the $\ensuremath{\delta}$ peak in the long-wave region, corresponding to one-boson excitations. In addition, the multi-boson-excitations band exists in the wave-number region near to ${2k}_{F},$ where ${k}_{F}$ is the Fermi wave number. We develop a method to analyze the asymptotic behavior of the spectral functions near to the edges of the multi-boson-excitations band at zero temperature. The dynamic structure factor diverges at the edges of this band, while the dielectric function goes to zero there. Hence, a new collective charge mode appears in the one-dimensional electron liquid as a consequence of short-range dynamic correlations. The mode energy goes to zero at ${2k}_{F},$ which means that the ${2k}_{F}$ mode is soft.

Effects of long range electronic interactions on a one-dimensional electron system

Sylvain Capponi, Didier Poilblanc, Thierry Giamarchi

The effects of a long range electronic potential on a one dimensional chain of spinless fermions are investigated by numerical techniques and analytic calculations. Due to a competition between the 2kF oscillations in the density and the log divergence of the long wavelength part of the Coulomb potential, the metallic character of the system is enhanced at intermediate (and up to quite large) lengthscales. We found that this quasi-metallic regime is not of the Luttinger Liquid type, as evidenced by strong deviations from predictions of conformal field theory and in agreement with the picture of a (very weakly pinned) Wigner crystal. When the strength of the Coulomb interaction is substantially increased, we observe a smooth cross-over to a strongly localized charge density wave.

Interaction-range effects for fermions in one dimension

Martin Hohenadler, Stefan Weßel, Maria Daghofer +1 more

Experiments on quasi-one-dimensional systems such as quantum wires and metallic chains on surfaces suggest the existence of electron-electron interactions of substantial range and hence physics beyond the Hubbard model. We therefore investigate one-dimensional, quarter-filled chains with a Coulomb potential with variable screening length by quantum Monte Carlo methods and exact diagonalization. The Luttinger liquid interaction parameter ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ decreases with increasing interaction strength and range. Experimentally observed values close to 1/4 require strong interactions and/or large screening lengths. As predicted by bosonization, we find a metal-insulator transition at ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}=1/4$. Upon increasing the screening length, the charge and spin correlation functions reveal the crossover from dominant $2{k}_{\mathrm{F}}$ spin correlations to dominant $4{k}_{\mathrm{F}}$ charge correlations, and a strong enhancement of the charge velocity. In the metallic phase, the signatures of spin-charge separation in the single-particle spectrum, spinon and holon bands, remain robust even for rather long-ranged interactions. The charge-density-wave state exhibits backfolded shadow bands.

Many-body effects in the one-dimensional electron gas with short-range interaction

Alfred Gold

We discuss interaction effects for the one-dimensional electron gas with a repulsive \ensuremath{\delta}-function interaction potential by using the random-phase approximation and a local-field correction. Analytical results for the local-field correction of charge-density fluctuations and spin-density fluctuations are obtained. The ground-state energy is found to be in better agreement with the exact result than the ground-state energy calculated within the random-phase approximation. We calculate the pair-correlation functions for electrons with parallel and antiparallel spins and the paramagnetic susceptibility. The energies of the collective density modes ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathrm{d}}$ (q) and the collective spin modes ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathrm{s}}$ (q) are calculated and compared with the energy of the electron-hole excitations ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathrm{eh}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ (q): ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathrm{d}}$ (q\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0)>${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathrm{eh}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ (q\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0)>${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathrm{s}}$ (q\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0). The critical exponents for the long-distance behavior of correlation functions are found to be described by local-field corrections. We compare our results for the critical exponents with recent results obtained by bosonization techniques and the conformal field theory.

Effects of long-range electronic interactions on a one-dimensional electron system

Sylvain Capponi, Didier Poilblanc, Thierry Giamarchi

The effects of a long-range electronic potential on a one-dimensional chain of spinless fermions are investigated by numerical techniques (exact diagonalization of rings with up to 30 sites complemented by finite size analysis) and analytic calculations. Due to a competition between the ${2k}_{F}$ oscillations in the density and the (very slow) log divergence of the long wavelength part of the Coulomb potential, the metallic character of the system is enhanced at intermediate (and up to quite large) length scales. Despite some similarities, we found that this quasimetallic regime is not of the Luttinger liquid type, as evidenced by strong deviations from predictions of conformal field theory and in agreement with the picture of a (very weakly pinned) Wigner crystal. When the strength of the Coulomb interaction is substantially increased, we observe a smooth crossover to a strongly localized charge density wave.

Influence of long-range Coulomb interaction on the metal-insulator transition in one-dimensional strongly correlated electron systems

Ilya V. Krive, A. A. Nersesyan, M. Jonson +1 more

We study the influence of long-range Coulomb interactions on the properties of one-dimensional (1D) strongly correlated electron systems in the vicinity of the metal-insulator Mott-Hubbard phase transition. It is shown that, in the metallic phase, the standard square-root singularity of the compressibility at the transition point changes to a logarithmic one, due to the formation of a 1D Wigner crystal of solitons (holons). On increasing the soliton density in a finite-size chain, the behavior of the compressibilty reflects a sequence of crossovers between classical, low-density regimes of perfectly or nearly ordered Wigner-crystal states, and quantum regimes of a nearly free Fermi gas of solitons, followed (in the high-density limit) by a liquid phase of strongly correlated solitons. In a mesoscopic situation, where the screening length in a 1D chain is controlled by a massive electrode (gate) placed near the chain, there is a narrow region near the transition point where quantum fluctuations melt the Wigner crystal and recover the universal square-root singularity of the compressibility. Strong Coulomb interaction affects the formation of the charge excitations in the insulating phase, transforming the sine-Gordon solitons into quasiclassical Coulomb solitons. Multiplicative logarithmic renormalizations of the characteristic soliton size and rest energy are found.
