Abstract

We study a dilute gas with two species of Fermionic atoms of unequal concentrations, interacting via a short-range interaction with one deeply bound state. We study the properties of this system under the mean-field approximation. We obtain the effective interaction among the fermions and bosons, and discuss the collective modes of the system.

Second root of dilute Bose-Fermi mixtures

Orest Hryhorchak, V. Pastukhov

Abstract We discuss an equilibrium mean-field properties of mixtures consisting of bosons and spin-polarized fermionic atoms with a point-like interaction in an arbitrary dimension 2 < d < 4 . Particularly, besides the standard weak-coupling limit of the system with slightly depleted Bose condensate and almost ideal Fermi gas, we discuss the (meta)stable phase with dimers composed exactly of one boson and one fermion. The peculiarities of the fermion-dimer and the boson-dimer three-body effective interactions and their impact on the thermodynamic stability of the dilute Bose-Fermi mixtures are elucidated.

Static Impurities in a Weakly Interacting Bose Gas

G. Panochko, V. Pastukhov

We present a comprehensive discussion of the ground-state properties of dilute D-dimensional Bose gas interacting with a few static impurities. Assuming the short-ranged character of the boson-impurity interaction, we calculated the energy of three- and two-dimensional Bose systems with one and two impurities immersed.

Instability of Superfluid across Feshbach Resonances

C.-H. Pao, Shin-Tza Wu, Sungkit Yip

We consider a dilute atomic gas comprising two species of Fermions with unequal concentrations. We study at zero temperature the atom‐molecule mixture with inter‐species low‐energy scatterings induced by a Feshbach resonance. To examine the stability of this superfluid, we calculate the chemical potential and the superfluid density for fixed individual concentrations. We find that the system can have distinct properties compared to the ordinary Bose‐Fermi mixture due to the unbound fermions.

Fermionic quantum mixtures with tunable interactions

Rudolf Grimm, Cosetta Baroni

The topic of the present lecture notes are two-species quantum mixtures composed of a deeply degenerate Fermi gas and a second component, the latter being fermionic or bosonic. A key ingredient is the possibility to tune the $s$-wave interaction between the different species by means of magnetically controlled Feshbach resonances, which allow us to investigate regimes of strong interactions. In two case studies, we review our experiments on mixtures of $^6$Li fermions with fermionic $^{40}$K or bosonic $^{41}$K atoms and on mixtures of fermionic $^{161}$Dy with $^{40}$K atoms. We cover various topics of fermionic quantum many-body physics, ranging from impurity physics and quasiparticles over phase separation to the formation of ultracold molecules and progress towards novel superfluids.

Theory of Interacting Quantum Gases

Henk T. C. Stoof, M. Bijlsma, M. Houbiers

We present a unified picture of the interaction effects in dilute atomic quantum gases. We consider fermionic as well as bosonic gases and, in particular, discuss for both forms of statistics the fundamental differences between a gas with effectively repulsive and a gas with effectively attractive interatomic interactions, i.e.\ between a gas with either a positive or a negative scattering length.
