Abstract

We propose and analyze two series of clustered quantum Hall states for rotating systems of spin-1 bosons. The first series [labeled SU(4)(k)] includes the exact ground states of a model Hamiltonian at large angular momentum L, and also for N=3k particles at L=N. The latter is a spin-singlet boson-triplet condensate. The second series, labeled SO(5)(k), includes exact ground states at large L for different parameter values.

Rotating Spin-1 Bose Clusters

Tin-Lun Ho, Erich J. Mueller

We propose a simple scheme for generating rotating atomic clusters in an optical lattice which produces states with quantum Hall and spin liquid properties. As the rotation frequencies increase, the ground state of a rotating cluster of spin-1 Bose atoms undergoes a sequence of (spin and orbit) transitions, which terminates at an angular momentum L(*) substantially lower than that of the boson Laughlin state. The spin-orbit correlations reflect "fermionization" of bosons facilitated by their spin degrees of freedom. We also show that the density of an expanding group of clusters has a scaling form which reveals the quantum Hall and spin structure of a single cluster.

Rotating spin-1 bosons in the lowest Landau level

J. W. Reijnders, F. J. M. van Lankvelt, Kareljan Schoutens +1 more

We present results for the ground states of a system of spin-1 bosons in a rotating trap. We focus on the dilute, weakly interacting regime, and restrict the bosons to the quantum states in the lowest Landau level (LLL) in the plane (disk), sphere, or torus geometries. We map out parts of the zero-temperature phase diagram, using both exact quantum ground states and LLL mean-field configurations. For the case of a spin-independent interaction we present exact quantum ground states at angular momentum $L<~N.$ For general values of the interaction parameters, we present mean-field studies of general ground states at slow rotation and of lattices of vortices and skyrmions at higher rotation rates. Finally, we discuss quantum Hall liquid states at ultrahigh rotation.

"Fermionization" of Rotating Spin-1 Bose Clusters

Tin-Lun Ho, Erich J. Mueller

We propose a simple scheme of generating rotating atomic clusters in an optical lattices which produces states with quantum Hall and spin liquid properties. As the rotation frequencies increases, the ground state of a rotating cluster of spin-1 Bose atoms undergoes a sequence of (spin and orbit) transitions, which terminates at an angular momentum $L^{\ast}$ substantially lower than that of the boson Laughlin state. The spin-orbit correlations reflect "fermionization" of bosons facilitated by their spin degrees of freedom. We also show that the density of an expanding group of clusters has a scaling form which reflects the quantum Hall and the spin structure of a single cluster.

Quantum Hall effect of two-component bosons at fractional and integral fillings

Ying-Hai Wu, Jainendra K. Jain

We investigate the feasibility of many candidate quantum Hall states for two-component bosons in the lowest Landau level. We identify interactions for which spin-singlet incompressible states occur at filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=2/3$, $4/5$, and $4/3$, and partially spin-polarized states at filling factors $3/4$ and $3/2$, where ``spin'' serves as a generic label for the two components. We study ground states, excitations, edge states, and entanglement spectrum for systems with up to 16 bosons and construct explicit trial wave functions to clarify the underlying physics. The composite fermion theory very accurately describes the ground states as well as excitations at $\ensuremath{\nu}=2/3$, $4/5$, and $3/4$, although it is less satisfactory for the $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/2$ state. For $\ensuremath{\nu}=4/3$ a ``non-Abelian spin-singlet'' state, which is the exact ground state of a three-body contact interaction, has been proposed to occur even for a two-body contact interaction; our trial wave functions are very accurate for the excitations of the three-body interaction, but they do not describe the excitations of the two-body interaction very well. Instead, we find that the $\ensuremath{\nu}=4/3$ state is more likely to be a spin-singlet state of reverse-flux-attached composite fermions at filling ${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{*}=4$. We also consider incompressible states at integral filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$ and 2. The incompressible state at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$ is shown to be well described by the parton-based Jain spin-singlet wave function, and the incompressible state at $\ensuremath{\nu}=2$ as the spin-singlet state of reverse-flux-attached composite fermions at ${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{*}=2$, which provides an example of the bosonic integer topological phase.

Quantum Hall fractions for spinless bosons

Nicolas Regnault, Th. Jolicœur

We study the quantum Hall phases that appear in the fast-rotation limit for Bose-Einstein condensates of spinless bosonic atoms. We use exact diagonalization in a spherical geometry to obtain low-lying states of a small number of bosons as a function of the angular momentum. This allows us to understand or guess the physics at a given filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}$, the ratio of the number of bosons to the number of vortices. This is also the filling factor of the lowest Landau level. In addition to the well-known Bose-Laughlin state at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1∕2$, we give evidence for the Jain principal sequence of incompressible states at $\ensuremath{\nu}=p∕(p\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1)$ for a few values of $p$. There is a collective mode in these states whose phenomenology is in agreement with standard arguments coming, e.g., from the composite-fermion picture. At filling factor 1, the potential Fermi sea of composite fermions is replaced by a paired state, the Moore-Read state. This is most clearly seen from the half-flux nature of elementary excitations. We find that the hierarchy picture does not extend up to the point of transition towards a vortex lattice. While we cannot come to any definite conclusions, we investigate the clustered Read-Rezayi states and show evidence for incompressible states at the expected ratio of flux versus number of Bose particles.

Condensation of “Composite Bosons” in a Rotating BEC

Nicola K. Wilkin, J. M. F. Gunn

We provide evidence for several novel phases in the dilute limit of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. By exact calculation of wave functions and energies for small numbers of particles, we show that the states near integer angular momentum per particle are best considered condensates of composite entities, involving vortices and atoms. We are led to this result by explicit comparison with a description purely in terms of vortices. Several parallels with the fractional quantum Hall effect emerge, including the presence of the Pfaffian state.
