Genuine phase diffusion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the microcanonical ensemble: A classical field study

Alice Sinatra, Yvan Castin

Within the classical field model, we find that the phase of a uniform Bose-Einstein condensate at nonzero temperature undergoes a true diffusive motion in the microcanonical ensemble, the variance of the condensate phase change between time zero and time $t$ growing linearly in $t$. The phase diffusion coefficient obeys a simple scaling law in the double thermodynamic and Bogoliubov limit. We construct an approximate calculation of the diffusion coefficient, in fair agreement with the numerical results over the considered temperature range, and we extend this approximate calculation to the quantum field.

PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION OF THE PHASE OF A BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATE

Shujuan Liu, Hongwei Xiong, Lei Wang

For temperatures far below the critical temperature, the probability distribution of the phase of a Bose–Einstein condensate is investigated for the phase diffusion process due to collective excitations spontaneously created from the condensate. Our results show that the phase diffusion decreases with the increasing of the particle number in the condensate.

Phase-Diffusion Dynamics in Weakly Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the phase sensitivity of collisional phase diffusion between weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, using a semiclassical picture of the two-mode Bose-Hubbard model. When weak coupling is allowed, zero relative phase locking is attained in the Josephson-Fock transition regime, whereas a pi relative phase is only locked in Rabi-Josephson point. Our analytic semiclassical estimates agree well with the numerical results.
