Exact spectral functions of a non-Fermi liquid in one dimension

Karlo Penc, B. Sriram Shastry

We study the exact one-electron propagator and spectral function of a solvable model of interacting electrons due to Schulz and Shastry. The solution previously found for the energies and wave functions is extended to give spectral functions that turn out to be computable, interesting, and nontrivial. They provide one of the few examples of cases where the spectral functions are known asymptotically as well as exactly.

Coupled electron-impurity and electron-phonon systems as trivial non-Fermi liquids

Donovan Buterakos, S. Das Sarma

We consider an electron gas, both in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions, interacting with quenched impurities and phonons within leading order finite-temperature many-body perturbation theories, calculating the electron self-energies, spectral functions, and momentum distribution functions at finite temperatures. The resultant spectral function is in general highly non-Lorentzian, indicating that the system is not a Fermi liquid in the usual sense. The calculated momentum distribution function cannot be approximated by a Fermi function at any temperature, providing a rather simple example of a non-Fermi liquid with well-understood properties.

Holographic Non-Fermi Liquids and the Luttinger Theorem

Finn Krebs Larsen, Greg van Anders

We show that the Luttinger theorem, a robust feature of Fermi liquids, can be violated in non-Fermi liquids. We compute non-Fermi liquid Green functions using duality to black holes and find that the volume of the Fermi surface depends exponentially on the scaling dimension, which is a measure of the coupling. This demonstrates that Luttinger's theorem does not extend to non-Fermi liquids. We comment on possible experimental signatures.
