Abstract

We consider a system of one-dimensional non-interacting fermions in external harmonic confinement. Using an efficient Green's function method we evaluate the exact profiles and the pair correlation function, showing a direct signature of the Fermi statistics and of the single quantum-level occupancy. We also study the dynamical properties of the gas, obtaining the spectrum both in the collisionless and in the collisional regime. Our results apply as well to describe a one-dimensional Bose gas with point-like hard-core interactions.

Fermionization of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Bess Fang, Patrizia Vignolo, Christian Miniatura +1 more

We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a harmonic trap. It consists of a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas (1D Bose gas with repulsive hard-core interactions) and of a noninteracting Fermi gas (1D spin-aligned Fermi gas), both species interacting through hard-core repulsive interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we determine the one-body density matrices, exact particle density profiles, momentum distributions, and behavior of the mixture under 1D expansion when opening the trap. In real space, bosons and fermions do not display any phase separation: the respective density profiles extend over the same region and they both present a number of peaks equal to the total number of particles in the trap. In momentum space the bosonic component has the typical narrow TG profile, while the fermionic component shows a broad distribution with fermionic oscillations at small momenta. Due to the large boson-fermion repulsive interactions, both the bosonic and the fermionic momentum distributions decay as $C{p}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at large momenta, like in the case of a pure bosonic TG gas. The coefficient $C$ is related to the two-body density matrix and to the bosonic concentration in the mixture. When opening the trap, both momentum distributions ``fermionize'' under expansion and turn into that of a Fermi gas with a particle number equal to the total number of particles in the mixture.

Shell structure in the density profiles for noninteracting fermions in anisotropic harmonic confinement

Patrizia Vignolo, Anna Minguzzi

We develop a Green's function method to evaluate the exact equilibrium particle-density profiles of noninteracting Fermi gases in external harmonic confinement in any spatial dimension and for arbitrary trap anisotropy. While in a spherically symmetric configuration the shell effects are negligible in the case of a large number of particles, we find that for very anisotropic traps the quantum effects due to single-level occupancy and the deviations from the Thomas-Fermi approximation are also visible for mesoscopic clouds.

Hard-core Bose-Fermi mixture in one-dimensional split traps

Xiao-Long Lu, Xiangguo Yin, Yunbo Zhang

We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a hard-wall trap or a harmonic oscillator trap with a tunable $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function barrier at the trap center. The mixture consists of a 1D Bose gas with repulsive interactions and of a 1D noninteracting spin-aligned Fermi gas, with both species interacting through hard-core interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we calculate the reduced single-particle density matrix and the momentum distribution of the gas as a function of barrier strength and the parity of particle number. The secondary peaks in the momentum distribution show remarkable correlation between particles on the two sides of the split.

DEGENERATE GASES UNDER HARMONIC CONFINEMENT IN ONE DIMENSION: RIGOROUS RESULTS IN THE IMPENETRABLE-BOSONS/SPIN-POLARIZED-FERMIONS LIMIT

Patrizia Vignolo, Anna Minguzzi, M. P. Tosi

Developments in the realization and study of ultracold atomic gases inside elongated magnetic traps and atom waveguides have stimulated calculations of equilibrium properties and excitation spectra for mesoscopic clouds of hard-core bosons and of spin-polarized fermions moving under an external harmonic potential in one dimension. A rigorous correspondence exists between the wave functions of these two types of system, allowing a number of exact results to be obtained. The main theoretical techniques and results are reviewed in this article, with emphasis on their relevance in regard to tests of the Thomas–Fermi approximation for confined Fermi fluids and to the foundations of density functional theory for inhomogeneous quantum systems.

One-dimensional multicomponent Fermi gas in a trap: quantum Monte Carlo study

Matveeva, N., Astrakharchik, Grigori

A one-dimensional world is very unusual as there is an interplay between quantum statistics and geometry, and a strong short-range repulsion between atoms mimics Fermi exclusion principle, fermionizing the system. Instead, a system with a large number of components with a single atom in each, on the opposite acquires many bosonic properties. We study the ground-state properties of a multicomponent repulsive Fermi gas trapped in a harmonic trap by a fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method. The interaction between all components is considered to be the same. We investigate how the energetic properties (energy, contact) and correlation functions (density profile and momentum distribution) evolve as the number of components is changed. It is shown that the system fermionizes in the limit of strong interactions. Analytical expressions are derived in the limit of weak interactions within the local density approximation for an arbitrary number of components and for one plus one particle using an exact solution.

Fermionization and bosonization of expanding one-dimensional anyonic fluids

Adolfo del Campo

The momentum distribution of an expanding cloud of one-dimensional hard-core anyons is studied by an exact numerical approach, and shown to become indistinguishable from that of a noninteracting spin-polarized Fermi gas for large enough times (dynamical fermionization). We also consider the expansion of one-dimensional anyons with strongly attractive short-range interactions suddenly released from a parabolic external potential, and find that the momentum distribution approaches that of its dual system, the ideal Bose gas (dynamical bosonization). For both processes the characteristic time scales are identified, and the effect of the initial confinement is analyzed comparing the dynamics associated with both harmonic and hard-wall traps.
