Abstract

Holes weakly doped into a four-leg t-$J$ ladder bind in pairs. At dopings exceeding a critical doping of ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}\ensuremath{\simeq}\frac{1}{8}$ four-hole clusters are observed to form in density-matrix renormalization-group calculations. The symmetry of the ground-state wave function does not change and we are able to reproduce this behavior qualitatively with an effective bosonic model in which the four-leg ladder is represented as two coupled two-leg ladders and hole pairs are mapped on hard-core bosons moving along and between these ladders. At lower dopings, $\ensuremath{\delta}<{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c},$ a one-dimensional bosonic representation for hole pairs works and allows us to calculate accurately the Luttinger liquid parameter ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ that takes the universal value ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}=1$ as half-filling is approached.

Bosonic model of hole pairs

Thomas Siller, Matthias Troyer, Thomas Maurice Rice +1 more

We numerically investigate a bosonic representation for hole pairs on a two-leg $t\ensuremath{-}J$ ladder where hard core bosons on a chain represent the hole pairs on the ladder. The interaction between hole pairs is obtained by fitting the density profile obtained with the effective model to the one obtained with the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model, taking into account the inner structure of the hole pair given by the hole-hole correlation function. For these interactions we calculate the Luttinger liquid parameter, which takes the universal value ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}=1$ as half filling is approached, for values of the rung exchange ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ between strong coupling and the isotropic case. The long distance behavior of the hole-hole correlation function is also investigated. Starting from large ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}},$ the correlation length first increases as expected but diminishes significantly as ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ is reduced and bound holes sit mainly on adjacent rungs. As the isotropic case is approached, the correlation length increases again. This effect is related to the different kind of bonds in the region between the two holes of a hole pair when they move apart.

Successive opening of the Fermi surface in dopedN-leg Hubbard ladders

Urs Ledermann, Karyn Le Hur, Thomas Maurice Rice

We study the effect of doping away from half-filling in weakly (but finitely) interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders using renormalization-group and bosonization techniques. For a small on-site repulsion U, the N-leg Hubbard ladders are equivalent to an N-band model, where at half-filling the Fermi velocities are ${v}_{1}{=v}_{N}<{v}_{2}{=v}_{N\ensuremath{-}1}<\ensuremath{\cdot}\ensuremath{\cdot}\ensuremath{\cdot}.$ We then obtain a hierarchy of energy scales, where the band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ are successively frozen out. The low-energy Hamiltonian is then the sum of $N/2$ [or $(N\ensuremath{-}1)/2$ for N odd] two-leg ladder Hamiltonians without gapless excitations (plus a single chain for N odd with one gapless spin mode)---similar to the N-leg Heisenberg spin ladders. The energy scales lead to a hierarchy of gaps. Upon doping away from half-filling, the holes first enter the band(s) with the smallest gap: For odd N, the holes enter first the nonbonding band $(N+1)/2$ and the phase is a Luttinger liquid, while for even N, the holes enter first the band pair $(N/2,N/2+1)$ and the phase is a Luther-Emery liquid, similar to numerical treatments of the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model, i.e., at and close to half-filling, the phases of the Hubbard ladders for small and large U are the same. For increasing doping, hole pairs subsequently enter at critical dopings the other band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ (accompanied by a diverging compressibility): The Fermi surface is successively opened by doping, starting near the wave vector $(\ensuremath{\pi}/2,\ensuremath{\pi}/2).$ Explicit calculations are given for the cases $N=3$ and 4.

Ground states of the doped four-leg t-J ladder

Steven R. White, Douglas J. Scalapino

Using density-matrix renormalization-group techniques, we have studied the ground states of the four-leg t-J ladder doped near half-filling. Depending upon J/t and the hole doping x, three characteristic types of ground states are found: (1) a state containing ${\mathrm{d}}_{{\mathrm{x}}^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{y}}^{2}}$ pairs, (2) a striped charge-density wave (CDW) domain-wall state, and (3) a phase-separated regime. The CDW domain walls consist of fluctuating hole pairs and this state has significant ${\mathrm{d}}_{{\mathrm{x}}^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{y}}^{2}}$ pair field correlations.

Ground-state phase diagram of the extended two-leg t−J ladder

Xin Lu, Dai-Wei Qu, Yang Qi +2 more

Inspired by the observation of a robust $d$-wave superconducting phase driven by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping in recent density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of six- and eight-leg $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model, we systematically study the phase diagram of the two-leg $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ ladder with the NNN couplings (including NNN hopping and spin interaction) in a large region of doping level, by means of the DMRG calculations. Upon doping from half filling, we identify the Luther-Emery liquid (LEL) phase, which can be distinguished as the pairing-dominant and charge density-dominant regime by comparing the Luttinger parameter ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$. With the growing NNN couplings, pairing correlations are enhanced and correspondingly ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ increases, driving the system from the density-dominant to the pairing-dominant regime. In the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase in the larger doping region, we identify two TLL regimes with different features of charge density correlation. At the quarter filling ($1/2$ doping level), we find that the strong dimer orders of bond energy in the open system actually decay algebraically and thus do not indicate a spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. Our results show that in the LEL phase of the two-leg ladder, the NNN couplings seem to play the similar role as that on the wider $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ cylinder, and studies on this more accessible system can be helpful toward understanding the emergence of the remarkable $d$-wave superconducting phase on the wider system.

Reexamining doped two-legged Hubbard ladders

Yang Shen, Guang-Ming Zhang, Mingpu Qin

We revisit the ground state of the Hubbard model on two-legged ladders in this paper. We perform density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations on large system sizes with large numbers of kept states and perform extrapolation of DMRG results with truncation errors in the converged region. We find that the superconducting correlation exponent ${K}_{sc}$ extracted from the pair-pair correlation is very sensitive to the position of the reference bond, reflecting a huge boundary effect on it. By systematically removing the effects from boundary conditions, finite sizes, and truncation errors in DMRG, we obtain more accurate values of ${K}_{sc}$ and ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ with DMRG. With these exponents, we confirm that the two-legged Hubbard model is in the Luther-Emery liquid phase with ${K}_{sc}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}=1$ from tiny doping near half filling to $1/8$ hole doping. When the doping is increased to $\ensuremath{\delta}⪆1/6$, the behaviors of charge, pairing, and spin correlations do not change qualitatively, but the relationship ${K}_{sc}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}=1$ is likely to be violated. With the further increase of the doping to $\ensuremath{\delta}=1/3$, the quasi-long-ranged charge correlation turns into a true long-ranged charge order, and the spin gap is closed, while the pair-pair correlation still decays algebraically. Our work provides a standard way to analyze the correlation functions when studying systems with open boundary conditions.

Phase diagram of coupled ladders

T. F. A. Müller, Thomas Maurice Rice

The two-leg $t\ensuremath{-}J$ ladder forms a spin liquid at half filling that evolves to a Luther-Emery liquid upon doping. Our aim is to obtain a complete phase diagram for isotropic coupling (i.e., rungs and legs equal) as a function of electron density n and the ratio $J/t.$ Two known limiting cases are $n<\frac{1}{2},$ which is a single band Luttinger liquid, and small hole doping $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\ll}1$ for $J/\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{t}0,$ which is a Nagaoka ferromagnet. Using Lanczos techniques we examine the region between the Nagaoka and Luther-Emery phases for $1>n>\frac{1}{2}.$ We find evidences for gapless behavior in both spin and charge channels for $J/t<0.3,$ consistent with Luttinger liquids in both bonding and antibonding bands (i.e., $C2S2).$ This proposal is based on the behavior of spin and charge correlation functions. For example, the hole-hole correlation function that displays hole pairing at larger $J/t$ shows hole-hole repulsion in this region. As a further test, we examined the dependence of the energy on a relative phase shift between bonding and antibonding bands. For $J/t<0.3$ this is very weak, indicating a lack of pairing between these channels.
