Abstract

We review the level spectroscopy, which is a powerful method of analyzing the numerical data with respect to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition in one dimension. We focus mainly on its physical meaning and also its application to the magnetization plateau problems.

BKT transition and level spectroscopy

K. Nomura, Atsuhiro Kitazawa

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition is one of the instability mechanisms for the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. But in the BKT transition, there are logarithmic-correction problems, which make it very difficult to treat BKT transitions numerically. We propose a method, ``level spectroscopy'', to overcome such difficulties, based on the renormalization group analysis and the symmetry consideration.

Magnetization plateau and quantum phase transition of theS= ½ trimerizedXXZspin chain

Kiyomi Okamoto, Atsuhiro Kitazawa

We study the plateau of the magnetization curve at M = M s /3 ( M s is the saturation magnetization) of the S = ½ trimerized XXZ spin chain. By examining the level crossing of low-lying excitations obtained from the numerical diagonalization, we precisely determine the phase boundary between the plateau state and the no-plateau state on the - t plane, where denotes the XXZ anisotropy and t the magnitude of the trimerization. This quantum phase transition is of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type.

Field-induced Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and string-density plateau in the anisotropic triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model

Hiromi Otsuka, Yutaka Okabe, Kouichi Okunishi

The field-induced Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in the ground state of the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model is studied by the level-spectroscopy method. We analyze dimensions of operators around the BKT line, and estimate the BKT point H(c) approximately equal to 0.5229 +/-0.001, which is followed by the level-consistency check to demonstrate the accuracy of our estimate. Further we investigate the anisotropic case to clarify the stability of the field-induced string-density plateau against an incommensurate liquid state by the density-matrix renormalization-group method.

Scale-invariant phase transition of disordered bosons in one dimension

Tanul Gupta, Guido Masella, Francesco Mattiotti +2 more

The disorder-induced quantum phase transition between superfluid and nonsuperfluid states of bosonic particles in one dimension is generally expected to be of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type. Here, we show that hard-core lattice bosons with power-law hopping decaying with distance as $1/{r}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ with a finite integral over space---corresponding in spin language to an $XY$ model with power-law couplings---undergo a non-BKT continuous phase transition instead. We use exact quantum Monte Carlo methods to determine the phase diagram for different values of the exponent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, focusing on the regime $\ensuremath{\alpha}>2$. We find that the scaling of the superfluid stiffness with the system size is scale invariant at the transition point for any $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\le}3$---a behavior incompatible with the BKT scenario and typical of continuous phase transitions in higher dimension. By a scaling analysis near the transition point, we find that our data are consistent with a correlation length exponent satisfying the Harris bound $\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\ge}2$ and demonstrate a universal behavior of disordered bosons in one dimension. For $\ensuremath{\alpha}>3$ our data are consistent with a BKT scenario where the liquid is pinned by infinitesimal disorder.
