Abstract

A time-dependent method for calculating the collective excitation frequencies and densities of a trapped, inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate with circulation is presented. The results are compared with time-independent solutions of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. The method is based on time-dependent linear-response theory combined with spectral analysis of moments of the excitation modes of interest. The technique is straightforward to apply, extremely efficient in our implementation with parallel fast Fourier transform methods, and produces highly accurate results. For high dimensionality or low symmetry the time-dependent approach is a more practical computational scheme and produces accurate and reliable data. The method is suitable for general trap geometries, condensate flows and condensates permeated with defects and vortex structures.

Analytical calculations on Landau damping of collective modes in anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates

Xiaodong Ma, Yong-li Ma, Guoxiang Huang

We develop an analytical approach for calculating the Landau damping of collective modes in the Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by an anisotropic harmonic potential. Based on a variational ground-state wave function obtained by solving the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation beyond Thomas-Fermi approximation, we solve the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations describing thermal excited quasiparticles and provide divergence-free analytical solutions for the Bogoliubov amplitudes and coupling matrix elements that characterize the interaction between the collective modes and the quasiparticles. With these analytical results we evaluate the Landau damping rates of several collective modes for various anisotropic parameters of the trapping potential in terms of the formulas derived from a time-dependent mean-field theory. In addition, we discuss the dependence of the damping rates on temperature, particle number, trapping frequency, and anisotropic parameter of the system, and compare our theoretical results with experimental and numerical data reported in literature.

Analytical solutions of the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations for excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein-condensed gas

Bambi Hu, Guoxiang Huang, Yong-li Ma

We propose a method for finding analytical solutions of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) equations for the low-lying collective excitations in a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate beyond the Thomas-Fermi limit. We first use a simple variational wave function for ground state to eliminate the divergence at the boundary layer of the condensate, which appears in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We then solve the BdG equations analytically and obtain explicit and divergence-free expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the excitations for the traps with spherical and cylindrical symmetries. The solutions of the zero-energy mode of the BdG equations are also presented.

Quantum fluctuations in trapped time-dependent Bose-Einstein condensates

Michael Uhlmann

Quantum fluctuations in time-dependent, harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates are studied within Bogoliubov theory. An eigenmode expansion of the linear field operators permits the diagonalization of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation for a stationary condensate. When trap frequency or interaction strength is varied, the inhomogeneity of the background gives rise to off-diagonal coupling terms between different modes. This coupling is negligible for low energies, i.e., in the hydrodynamic regime, and an effective space-time metric can be introduced. The influence of the intermode coupling will be demonstrated in an example, where I calculate the quasiparticle number for a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate subject to an exponential sweep of interaction strength and trap frequency.

Collective dynamics of vortices in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Tapio Simula

We have calculated collective-mode spectra for three-dimensional, rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in oblate harmonic traps using the microscopic Bogoliubov--de Gennes field theory. For condensates with ${N}_{v}$ vortices, ${N}_{v}$ Kelvin-Tkachenko-mode branches are obtained. The features of these modes are compared with those predicted by a classical point-vortex model. We have created movies to visualize the motion of the vortices corresponding to the Kelvin-Tkachenko waves.

Collective modes of ground and excited states of Bose–Einstein condensates in axially symmetric anisotropic traps

M. S. Pindzola, Baoqing Sun

Collective modes of the ground and excited states of Bose?Einstein condensates are calculated by diagonalization of the Bogoliubov?de Gennes matrix in cylindrical coordinates. For an isotropic magnetic trap, the first breathing mode frequencies of the ground and dark soliton excited states are found to be in excellent agreement with a direct solution of the Gross?Pitaevskii equation with a time-dependent driving potential. In addition, the matrix diagonalization yields densities and frequencies for second breathing modes and higher order multipole modes. For an axially symmetric anisotropic trap, a considerable number of collective modes of the ground and dark soliton excited states are calculated. Prolate traps are found to have many more low-frequency multipolar modes than found in oblate traps for both ground and dark soliton excited states.

Excitation spectra of many-body systems by linear response: General theory and applications to trapped condensates

Julian Grond, Alexej I. Streltsov, Axel U. J. Lode +3 more

We derive a general linear-response many-body theory capable of computing excitation spectra of trapped interacting bosonic systems, e.g., depleted and fragmented Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). To obtain the linear-response equations we linearize the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree for bosons (MCTDHB) method, which provides a self-consistent description of many-boson systems in terms of orbitals and a state vector (configurations), and is in principle numerically exact. The derived linear-response many-body theory, which we term LR-MCTDHB, is applicable to systems with interaction potentials of general form. For the special case of a $\ensuremath{\delta}$ interaction potential we show explicitly that the response matrix has a very appealing bilinear form, composed of separate blocks of submatrices originating from contributions of the orbitals, the state vector (configurations), and off-diagonal mixing terms. We further give expressions for the response weights and density response. We introduce the notion of the type of excitations, useful in the study of the physical properties of the equations. From the numerical implementation of the LR-MCTDHB equations and solution of the underlying eigenvalue problem, we obtain excitations beyond available theories of excitation spectra, such as the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) equations. The derived theory is first applied to study BECs in a one-dimensional harmonic potential. The LR-MCTDHB method contains the BdG excitations and, also, predicts a plethora of additional many-body excitations which are out of the realm of standard linear response. In particular, our theory describes the exact energy of the higher harmonic of the first (dipole) excitation not contained in the BdG theory. We next study a BEC in a very shallow one-dimensional double-well potential. We find with LR-MCTDHB low-lying excitations which are not accounted for by BdG, even though the BEC has only little fragmentation and, hence, the BdG theory is expected to be valid. The convergence of the LR-MCTDHB theory is assessed by systematically comparing the excitation spectra computed at several different levels of theory.
