Abstract

We report inelastic time-of-flight and triple-axis neutron scattering measurements of the excitation spectrum of the coupled antiferromagnetic spin-1 Heisenberg chain system ${\mathrm{CsNiCl}}_{3}.$ Measurements over a wide range of wave-vector transfers along the chain confirm that above ${T}_{N} {\mathrm{CsNiCl}}_{3}$ is in a quantum-disordered phase with an energy gap in the excitation spectrum. The spin correlations fall off exponentially with increasing distance with a correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}=4.0(2)$ sites at $T=6.2\mathrm{K}.$ This is shorter than the correlation length for an antiferromagnetic spin-1 Heisenberg chain at this temperature, suggesting that the correlations perpendicular to the chain direction and associated with the interchain coupling lower the single-chain correlation length. A multiparticle continuum is observed in the quantum-disordered phase in the region in reciprocal space where antiferromagnetic fluctuations are strongest, extending in energy up to twice the maximum of the dispersion of the well-defined triplet excitations. We show that the continuum satisfies the Hohenberg-Brinkman sum rule. The dependence of the multiparticle continuum on the chain wave vector resembles that of the two-spinon continuum in antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains. This suggests the presence of spin-1/2 degrees of freedom in ${\mathrm{CsNiCl}}_{3}$ for $T<~12 \mathrm{K},$ possibly caused by multiply frustrated interchain interactions.

Multiparticle States in the S=1 Chain System CsNiCl3

M. Kenzelmann, Roger Arthur Cowley, W. J. L. Buyers +5 more

A continuum of magnetic states has been observed by neutron scattering from the spin-1 chain compound CsNiCl3 in its disordered gapped one-dimensional phase. Results using both triple-axis and time-of-flight spectrometers show that around the antiferromagnetic point Qc = pi, the continuum lies higher in energy than the Haldane gapped excitations. At 6 K the integrated intensity of the continuum is about 12(2)% of the total spectral weight. This result is considerably larger than the 1%-3% weight predicted by the nonlinear sigma model for the three-particle continuum.

Haldane-gap modes in theS=1 antiferromagnetic chain compound CsNiCl3

Z. Tun, W. J. L. Buyers, Robin L. Armstrong +2 more

For the antiferromagnetically coupled integer-spin ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{2+}$ chains of ${\mathrm{CsNiCl}}_{3}$ the Haldane gap is found by neutron scattering to be a singlet-to-triplet spin excitation. It has a 2\ensuremath{\pi} periodicity in momentum space with a dispersion relation that falls to a value of order twice the gap energy as Q\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2\ensuremath{\pi}. When the coupled ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{2+}$ chains undergo the transition to three-dimensional order, a set of longitudinal modes is found to occur that are not present in conventional theory where the excitations are transverse spin waves. Our calculations of the intensities show that near the ordering wave vector (1/3, 1)/3 ,1) the new modes agree with the field theory of Affleck but not with spin-wave theory. At larger interchain wave vectors both field theory and spin-wave theory break down.

Evolution of spin excitations in a gapped antiferromagnet from the quantum to the high-temperature limit

M. Kenzelmann, Roger Arthur Cowley, W. J. L. Buyers +3 more

We have mapped from the quantum to the classical limit the spin excitation spectrum of the antiferromagnetic spin-1 Heisenberg chain system ${\mathrm{CsNiCl}}_{3}$ in its paramagnetic phase from $T=5$ to $200\mathrm{K}.$ Neutron scattering shows that the excitations are resonant and dispersive up to at least $T=70\mathrm{K}\ensuremath{\simeq}2.7J,$ but broaden considerably with increasing temperature. The dispersion flattens out with increasing temperature as the resonance energy $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ at the antiferromagnetic wave vector increases and the maximum in the dispersion decreases. The correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}$ between $T=12$ and $50\mathrm{K}$ is in agreement with quantum Monte Carlo calculations for the spin-1 chain. $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is also consistent with the single mode approximation, suggesting that the excitations are short-lived single particle excitations. Below $T=12\mathrm{K}$ where three-dimensional spin correlations are important, $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is shorter than predicted and the experiment is not consistent with the random phase approximation for coupled quantum chains. At $T=200\mathrm{K},$ the structure factor and second energy moment of the excitation spectrum are in excellent agreement with the high-temperature series expansion.

Neutron Scattering Studies of Excitations in Spin Chains

E. Hirtenlechner

Many phenomena in magnetism can be described using classical models, yet magnetism is a quantum mechanical effect. In addition to thermal fluctuations, quantum fluctuations arise due to the quantum uncertainty of the ground state. These fluctuations are enhanced by low dimensionality and low spin. Spin chains show interesting excitations associated with quasiparticles. Model materials for spin chains can be realized in compounds where the interchain interactions are weak enough. This thesis presents neutron scattering studies of two model materials for spin chains with different spin symmetry. The spin2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain CuSO4*5D2O has a main exchange of J ∼ 3 K, which permits to study its excitation spectrum up to temperatures of ten times the exchange. The spin2 Heisenberg magnet has been studied widely both theoretically and experimentally. The excitation spectrum of the spin2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet consists of quasiparticles called spinons, and calculations for it exist for T = 0 and as a function of temperature. A quantitative comparison between experimental data and theoretical models across a range of temperatures is presented. The excitation spectrum of CuSO4*5D2O is excellently described by the excitation spectrum of a spin2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain at finite temperatures. Energy-temperature scaling is observed at temperatures up to 2J . For these temperatures the Luttinger liquid description of the spin2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is valid. A spinon continuum is confirmed at all measured temperatures. Therefore, even at ten times the main exchange (T ≈ 10 J), CuSO4*5D2O shows the behavior of a quantum magnet, and not of a classical system at infinite temperatures, for which one would expect single spin flips. The Ising chain is one of the most studied models in magnetism, one model compound for it is RbCoCl3. Optical spectroscopy measurements suggest a lower gap than for similar compounds, which makes it better suited for high resolution neutron spectroscopy. Magnetic correlations along the chains arise in RbCoCl3 below 80 K. A gapped continuum is observed, which arises from isolated antiferromagnetic Ising chains. Below the first magnetic ordering temperature TN1 ≈ 28 K bound states are observed, which arise due to correlations which form between the chains. Strong diffuse scattering leads to the conclusion that disorder is still present. At the second magnetic ordering transition, at TN2 ≈ 14 K, the bound states split as the correlations between the chains change. Fits indicate that the correlations change continuously as a function of temperature. Above TN2 the excitation spectrum of RbCoCl3 can be described by a spin1 2 Ising chain with an XY-component which is treated as a perturbation. Below TN2 the main features are reproduced correctly, but deviations from the details indicate that additional terms in the Hamiltonian may be necessary. Measurement of the spin-excitation continuum in one-dimensional KCuF3 using neutron scattering

D. M. Tennant, Roger Arthur Cowley, S. E. Nagler +1 more

In this, and the following paper, we present the results of a detailed experimental investigation into the spin dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{KCuF}}_{3}$. In this paper we report results of inelastic neutron-scattering measurements made using the MARI time-of-flight spectrometer at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Measurement of the magnetic excitation spectrum was made in both the low-temperature phase, where the chains are ordered together, and in the high-temperature phase, where the correlations between chains become unimportant. We compare our measurements with the M\"uller ansatz, which is identified with a two-spinon cross section, and find excellent agreement with this. The effect of temperature on the excitation continuum was also investigated. A series of measurements were made at temperatures ranging from 20 to 200 K. These results are compared to the predictions of field theory for the one-dimensional Heisenberg chain. Again good agreement is found with the theoretical predictions. In the following paper measurements of the low-energy scattering in the ordered phase, made on a triple-axis spectrometer, are presented.

Continuum in the Spin-Excitation Spectrum of a Haldane Chain Observed by Neutron Scattering in CsNiCl3

Igor A. Zaliznyak, S.-H. Lee, S. V. Petrov

The spin-excitation continuum, expected to dominate the low-energy fluctuation spectrum in the Haldane spin chain around the Brillouin zone center, $q\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$, is directly observed by inelastic magnetic neutron scattering in the $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$ quasi-1D antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{CsNiCl}}_{3}$. We find that the single mode approximation fails, and that a finite energy width appears in the dynamic correlation function $S(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ for $q\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.5\ensuremath{\pi}$. The width increases with decreasing $q$, while $S(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ acquires an asymmetric shape qualitatively similar to that predicted for the two-magnon continuum in the nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}$-model.
