Degenerate ground states and stability of spatial solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract

By examining the bound-state spectra of transverse fluctuations about one-dimensional, spatially localized dark and bright soliton wavetrains of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, it is established that the low-temperature ground states of repulsive and attractive quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates are degenerate. In the one-soliton limit, both ground states are shown to possess two distinct transverse fluctuation modes which can couple to the spatial soliton: the first involves zero-energy exchange, costing only the soliton shape dressing via uniform translation of its centre of mass. The second mode contributes in a negative energy for the repulsive case, but positive energy in the attractive case. This unstability of the repulsive spatial soliton against localized transverse fluctuation modes invalidates the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for stationary solitonic processes in repulsive 1D Bose-Einstein-Condensate systems.

Quasi-one-dimensional soliton in a self-repulsive spin-orbit-coupled dipolar spin-half and spin-one condensates

S. K. Adhikari

We study the formation of solitons in a uniform quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) spin-orbit (SO) coupled self-repulsive pseudo spin-half and spin-one dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC), using the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The dipolar atoms are taken to be polarized along the quasi-1D $x$ direction. In the pseudo spin-half case, for small SO-coupling, one can have dark-bright and bright-bright solitons. For large SO coupling, the dark-bright and bright-bright solitons may acquire a spatially-periodic modulation in density; for certain values of contact interaction paramerers there is only the normal bright-bright soliton without spatially-periodic modulation in density. In the spin-one anti-ferromagnetic case, for small SO coupling, one can have bright-bright-bright, dark-bright-dark, and bright-dark-bright solitons; and for large SO coupling, the dark-bright-dark and bright-dark-bright solitons are found to have spatially-periodic modulation in density. In the spin-one ferromagnetic case, for both small and large SO coupling, we find only bright-bright-bright solitons. All these solitons, specially those with a dark-soliton component, are dynamically stable as demonstrated by real-time propagation using the converged stationary solution obtained by imaginary-time propagation as the initial state.

Two-dimensional bright and dark-in-bright dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate solitons on a one-dimensional optical lattice

S K Adhikari

Abstract We study the statics and dynamics of anisotropic, stable, bright and dark-in-bright dipolar quasi-two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) solitons on a one-dimensional (1D) optical-lattice (OL) potential. These solitons mobile in a plane perpendicular to a 1D OL trap can have both repulsive and attractive contact interactions. Dark-in-bright solitons are the excited states of bright solitons. The solitons, when subjected to a small perturbation, exhibit sustained breathing oscillation. Dark-in-bright solitons can be created by phase imprinting a bright soliton. At medium velocities the collision between two solitons is found to be quasi-elastic. Results are demonstrated by a numerical simulation of the three-dimensional mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation in three spatial dimensions employing realistic interaction parameters for a dipolar 164 Dy BEC.

Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates: Role of Dimensionality

Yuri S. Kivshar, Tristram J. Alexander

We analyse systematically, from the viewpoint of the nonlinear physics of solitary waves, the effect of the spatial dimension (D = 1,2,3) on the structure and stability of the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in an external anisotropic parabolic potential. While for the positive scattering length the stationary ground-state solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation are shown to be always stable independently of the spatial dimension, for the negative scattering length the ground-state condensate is stable only in the 1D and 2D cases, whereas in the 3D case it becomes unstable. A direct link between nonlinear modes of BECs and (bright and dark) solitary waves of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation is demonstrated for all the dimensions.

Dark and bright solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate

Shun-Jin Wang, Chenglong Jia, Dun Zhao +2 more

The analytical dark and bright soliton solutions of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a confining potential are obtained. For the bright soliton, the recent experimental finding is studied, and the particle number of the soliton and the window of the particle numbers for the bright soliton to occur are estimated analytically and in good agreement with the experimental data. The existence of dark soliton for the attractive interaction and bright soliton for the repulsive interaction is predicted under proper conditions.

Gap solitons in elongated geometries: The one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and beyond

Antonio Muñoz Mateo, V. Delgado, Boris A. Malomed

We report results of a systematic analysis of matter-wave gap solitons (GSs) in three-dimensional self-repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded into a combination of a cigar-shaped trap and axial optical-lattice (OL) potential. Basic cases of the strong, intermediate, and weak radial (transverse) confinement are considered, as well as settings with shallow and deep OL potentials. Only in the case of the shallow lattice combined with tight radial confinement, which actually has little relevance to realistic experimental conditions, does the usual one-dimensional (1D) cubic Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) furnish a sufficiently accurate description of GSs. However, the effective 1D equation with the nonpolynomial nonlinearity, derived in Ref. [Phys. Rev. A 77, 013617 (2008)], provides for quite an accurate approximation for the GSs in all cases, including the situation with weak transverse confinement, when the soliton's shape includes a considerable contribution from higher-order transverse modes, in addition to the usual ground-state wave function of the respective harmonic oscillator. Both fundamental GSs and their multipeak bound states are considered. The stability is analyzed by means of systematic simulations. It is concluded that almost all the fundamental GSs are stable, while their bound states may be stable if the underlying OL potential is deep enough.

Exploring the stability and dynamics of dipolar matter-wave dark solitons

Matthew Edmonds, Thomas Bland, Duncan H J O’Dell +1 more

We study the stability, form, and interaction of single and multiple dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. The solitons are found numerically as stationary solutions in the moving frame of a nonlocal Gross Pitaevskii equation and characterized as a function of the key experimental parameters, namely the ratio of the dipolar atomic interactions to the van der Waals interactions, the polarization angle, and the condensate width. The solutions and their integrals of motion are strongly affected by the phonon and roton instabilities of the system. Dipolar matter-wave dark solitons propagate without dispersion and collide elastically away from these instabilities, with the dipolar interactions contributing an additional repulsion or attraction to the soliton-soliton interaction. However, close to the instabilities, the collisions are weakly dissipative.
