Expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic waveguide

Abstract

The expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic waveguide is analyzed. We study different regimes of expansion, and identify a transient regime between one-dimensional and three-dimensional dynamics, in which the properties of the condensate and its further expansion can be well explained by reducing the transversal dynamics to a two-level system. The relevance of this regime in current experiments is discussed.

Expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a microtrap into a waveguide

James Stickney, Alex A. Zozulya

Coherence properties of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates determine the performance of waveguide atom interferometers. We analyze the expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a magnetic microtrap into a waveguide. We derive analytical expressions to describe the expansion, show how the expanded cloud maps onto transverse linear eigenfunctions of the guide, and calculate the dependence of the modal decomposition coefficients on the chemical potential of the cloud and the anisotropy of the trap. Analytical results are compared with three-dimensional numerical simulations of the expansion.

Exploring the Effects of Quantum Fluctuations in the Waveguide Expansion of a Bose-Einstein Condensate by means of Numerical Simulations

[EN] In this work, we have studied a dilute and ultracold bosonic gas of weakly interacting atoms, \ni.e. a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) by means of the Modi ed Gross-Pitaevskii equation \n(MGPE) taking into account beyond-mean- eld corrections due to quantum \nuctuations. We \nhave considered the case where the cloud of atoms is strongly con ned transversally (within a \ncigar-shaped trap) and therefore, the three-dimensional (3D) MGPE is reduced to an e ective \none-dimensional (1D) form by averaging over the transverse coordinates. Based on this approach, \nwe have performed numerical simulations for analyzing the behavior of the BEC under the \nin \nuence of quantum \nuctuations, which give rise to an additional nonlinear quartic term. After \nreviewing the mathematical theory of Bose-Einstein condensation based on the GPE and the \nnumerical methods used to integrate it we discuss the computation of the ground state and the \nsimulation of its dynamic evolution in a waveguide (free expansion).

Expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic potential

Murray Holland, J. Cooper

We analyze the three-dimensional dynamic expansion of a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap when the spring constants of the confining potential are instantaneously reduced. Our results are compared with experimental observation from a condensate of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms.

One-dimensional behavior of elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

Philippe Bouyer, Joseph H. Thywissen, Fabrice Gerbier +4 more

We study the properties of elongated Bose-Einstein condensates. First, we show that the dimensions of the condensate after expansion differs from the 3D Thomas-Fermi regime. We also study the coherence length of such elongated condensates.

Dark solitons in atomic Bose–Einstein condensates: from theory to experiments

D. J. Frantzeskakis

This review paper presents an overview of the theoretical and experimental progress on the study of matter-wave dark solitons in atomic Bose–Einstein condensates. Upon introducing the general framework, we discuss the statics and dynamics of single and multiple matter-wave dark solitons in the quasi one-dimensional setting, in higher dimensional settings, as well as in the dimensionality crossover regime. Special attention is paid to the connection between theoretical results, obtained by various analytical approaches, and relevant experimental observations.
