Abstract

We study the process of photodissociation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate as a potential source of strongly correlated twin atomic beams. We show that the two beams can possess nearly perfect quantum squeezing in their relative numbers.

Spatially Separated and Correlated Atom-molecule Lasers from a Bose Condensate

Hui Jing, Wei Hua Cai, Jingjun Xu +1 more

We propose a feasible scheme to create two spatially separated atomic and molecular beams from an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate by combining the Raman-type atom laser output and the two-color photo-association processes. We examine the quantum dynamics and statistical properties of the system under short-time limits, especially the quadrature-squeezed and mode-correlated behaviors of two output beams for different initial state of the condensate. The possibility to generate the entangled atom-molecule lasers by an optical technique was also discussed.

Quantum states of Bose-Einstein condensates formed by molecular dissociation

Uffe V. Poulsen, Klaus Mølmer

We analyze the atomic state obtained by photodissociation of a molecular condensate. The process is not amenable to the usual mean-field description, and we base our analysis on approximate equations for the second moments of the atomic field operators and on Monte Carlo simulations derived from a positive-P phase-space description of the system. Our calculations show that the dissociation process produces an atomic condensate in a squeezed state in analogy with the down-conversion process leading to squeezed light in quantum optics. Atomic interactions lead to a threshold similar to the one in optical down-conversion, and to an atomic ``Kerr'' effect, which ultimately deteriorates the degree of squeezing.

Rate Limit for Photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Juha Javanainen, Matt Mackie

We simulate numerically the photodissociation of molecules into noncondensate atom pairs that accompanies photoassociation of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate into a molecular condensate. Such rogue photodissociation sets a limit on the achievable rate of photoassociation. Given the atom density rho and mass m, the limit is approximately 6(planck)rho(2/3)/m.

Outcoupling from a Bose-Einstein condensate with squeezed light to produce entangled-atom laser beams

Simon A. Haine, J. J. Hope

We examine the properties of an atom laser produced by outcoupling from a Bose-Einstein condensate with squeezed light. We model the multimode dynamics of the output field and show that a significant amount of squeezing can be transferred from an optical mode to a propagating atom laser beam. We use this to demonstrate that two-mode squeezing can be used to produce twin atom laser beams with continuous variable entanglement in amplitude and phase.

Two-Particle Interference with Double Twin-Atom Beams

Filippo Borselli, Mira Maiwöger, Tiantian Zhang +8 more

We demonstrate a source for correlated pairs of atoms characterized by two opposite momenta and two spatial modes forming a Bell state only involving external degrees of freedom. We characterize the state of the emitted atom beams by observing strong number squeezing up to -10 dB in the correlated two-particle modes of emission. We furthermore demonstrate genuine two-particle interference in the normalized second-order correlation function g^{(2)} relative to the emitted atoms.

Generation of Macroscopic Pair-Correlated Atomic Beams by Four-Wave Mixing in Bose-Einstein Condensates

J. M. M. J. Vogels, K. Xu, Wolfgang Ketterle

By colliding two Bose-Einstein condensates, we have observed strong bosonic stimulation of the elastic scattering process. When a weak input beam was applied as a seed, it was amplified by a factor of 20. This large gain atomic four-wave mixing resulted in the generation of two macroscopically occupied pair-correlated atomic beams.
