Phase Separation due to Quantum Mechanical Correlations

Abstract

Can phase separation be induced by strong electron correlations? We present a theorem that affirmatively answers this question in the Falicov-Kimball model away from half filling, for any dimension. In the ground state the itinerant electrons are spatially separated from the classical particles.

Limits on phase separation for two-dimensional strongly correlated electrons

W. O. Putikka, Marco U. Luchini

From calculations of the high-temperature series for the free energy of the two-dimensional t-$J$ model we construct a series for ratios of the free energy per hole. The ratios can be extrapolated very accurately to low temperatures and used to investigate phase separation. Our results confirm that phase separation occurs only for $J/t\ensuremath{\gtrsim}1.2.$ Also, the phase transition into the phase-separated state has ${T}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}0.25J$ for large $J/t.$

Electronic phase transitions in the spinless falicov-kimball model with correlated hopping

Pavol Farkašovský, Štefan Gál

The extrapolation of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations is used to examine the influence of correlated hopping on valence and metal-insulator transitions in the one-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model. It is shown that in the half-filled band case the ground-state phase diagram as well as the picture of valence and metal-insulator transitions found for the conventional Falicov-Kimball model (without correlated hopping) are strongly changed when the correlated hopping term is added. The effect of correlated hopping is so strong that it can induce the insulator-metal transition. Outside half-filling correlated hopping stabilizes the segregated phase in the ground-state, however, the nature of the ground-state remains qualitatively unchanged.

Momentum distribution of itinerant electrons in the one-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model

The momentum distribution nk of itinerant electrons in the one-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model is calculated for various ground-state phases. In particular, we examine the periodic phases with period two, three and four (that are ground-states for all Coulomb interactions) as well as the phase separated states (that are ground states for small Coulomb interactions). For all periodic phases examined the momentum distribution is a smooth function of k with no sign of any discontinuity or singular behavior at the Fermi surface k = kF. An unusual behavior of nk (a local maximum) is found at k = 3kF for electron concentrations outside half-filling. For the phase separated ground states the momentum distribution nk exhibits discontinuity at k = k0 < kF. This behavior is interpreted in terms of a Fermi liquid. Electronic polarons in an extended Falicov-Kimball model

P. M. R. Brydon, M. Gulácsi, A. R. Bishop

We examine the one-dimensional spinless Falicov-Kimball model extended by a hybridization potential between the localized and itinerant electron states. Below half-filling we find a crossover from a mixed-valence metal to an integer-valence phase-separated state with increasing on-site Coulomb repulsion. This crossover regime is characterized by local competition between the strong- and weak-coupling behaviour, manifested by the formation of an electronic polaron liquid. A phase diagram is presented and discussed in detail.
