Emergent Z_2 gauge symmetry and spin-charge separation in one dimensional physics

Abstract

We demonstrate that in the scaling limit the phenomenon of spin-charge separation as encountered in Luttinger liquids defined on the lattice can be associated with the emergence of local Ising symmetry. This Z_2 gauge field is of geometrical nature (sublattice parity) and the Luttinger liquid corresponds with the critical point where the symmetry is on the verge of becoming local. We argue that in a true one dimensional superconductor the local symmetry will be fully realized as long as the geometrical structure associated with spin-charge separation is maintained.

Emergent superconformal symmetry in the phase diagram of a 1D $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory

Bachana Beradze, Mikheil Tsitsishvili, Sergej Moroz

We investigate the phase diagram and critical properties of a one-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory describing an orthogonal metal, where spinless fermions and Ising spins are minimally coupled to a deconfined $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ gauge field. Working at half-filling of fermions, we derive an exact gauge-invariant formulation that maps the model onto decoupled XXZ and transverse-field Ising chains. This mapping enables a controlled low-energy field-theory description in terms of a perturbed Luttinger liquid and Ising conformal field theories. Combining analytical arguments with numerical simulations, we determine the full phase diagram and identify various critical and multi-critical regimes. Along a specific multi-critical line, where the fermionic and bosonic velocities coincide, we find strong evidence for an emergent superconformal symmetry. Our results establish a minimal lattice realization of emergent superconformal criticalities in a gauge-matter system and provide a route toward its exploration in quantum simulators.

Stable Luttinger liquids and emergent $U(1)$ symmetry in constrained quantum chains

Ruben Verresen, Ashvin Vishwanath, Frank Pollmann

We explore the effect of local constraints on one-dimensional bosonic and fermionic ground state phases. Motivated by recent experiments on Rydberg chains, we constrain the occupation of neighboring sites in known phases of matter. Starting from Kitaev's topological superconductor wire, we find that a soft constraint induces a stable gapless Luttinger liquid phase. While Luttinger and Fermi liquids are usually unstable to superconducting proximity effects, the constraint suppresses pair creations, allowing for an emergent $U(1)$ symmetry and gaplessness. We substantiate this intuitive picture using field theoretical and Bethe ansatz methods. In particular, in the hard constraint limit, the model is explicitly $U(1)$-symmetric and integrable. For the corresponding spin-$1/2$ chains related by a Jordan-Wigner transformation, the Luttinger liquid is stabilized by the $\mathbb Z_2$ spin flip symmetry. Longer-range constraints stabilize gapless phases even without $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, connecting to the seminal work by Fendley, Sengupta and Sachdev [Physical Review B 69, 075106 (2004)], clarifying how the gapless floating phase observed therein can be vastly extended.

Giant number-parity effect and scalable spin squeezing in Luttinger liquids

Filippo Caleca, Saverio Bocini, Fabio Mezzacapo +1 more

Finite-size quantum spin systems can be magnetized by the application of a symmetry-breaking field, but in general their symmetry is expected to be restored once the field is turned off adiabatically. Recently (F. Caleca et al., arXiv:2412.15493) we have shown that systems of half-integer spins with an odd number of sites and a parity-preserving Hamiltonian can retain a finite magnetization, hence exhibiting spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) at finite size. Here we generalize this phenomenon to spin chains whose low-energy physics (in zero field) realizes a Luttinger-liquid phase. We observe that odd-sized chains can exhibit a phenomenon of finite-size quasi-SSB, in which a net sub-extensive magnetization, $M \sim N^{1-1/(4K)}$ is retained, where $N$ is the number of sites and $K$ the Luttinger exponent. Interestingly, the states prepared by turning off the symmetry-breaking field quasi-adiabatically display scalable spin squeezing -- namely stronger the bigger the system -- regardless of the parity of $N$. The scaling of the squeezing parameter is dictated again by the Luttinger exponent, $ξ_R^2 \sim N^{-1+1/(2K)}$. This result shows that scalable quantum correlations with metrological significance, associated typically with high-dimensional systems, can be found as well in gapless one-dimensional ones; and they are a direct consequence of the critical nature of Luttinger liquids.

Geometry and topological order in the non-relativistic Luttinger liquid

H. V. Kruis, Ian P. McCulloch, Zohar Nussinov +1 more

We demonstrate that the notion of spin-charge separation as follows from the Tomonaga-Luttinger theory of relativistic fermions does not suffice to completely specify the Luttinger liquid state associated with the fermions of condensed matter physics. The latter carries in addition a form of topological order which can be made visible using non-local correlation functions familiar from lattice gauge theory.

Confinement induced frustration in a one-dimensional Z2 lattice gauge theory

Matjaž Kebrič, Umberto Borla, Ulrich Schollwöck +3 more

Abstract Coupling dynamical charges to gauge fields can result in highly non-local interactions with a linear confining potential. As a consequence, individual particles bind into mesons which, in one dimension, become the new constituents of emergent Luttinger liquids (LLs). Furthermore, at commensurate fillings, different Mott-insulating states can be stabilized by including nearest-neighbour (NN) interactions among charges. However, rich phase diagrams expected in such models have not been fully explored and still lack comprehensive theoretical explanation. Here, by combining numerical and analytical tools, we study a simple one-dimensional Z 2 lattice gauge theory at half-filling, where U(1) matter is coupled to gauge fields and interacts through NN repulsion. We uncover a rich phase diagram where the local NN interaction stabilizes a Mott state of individual charges (or partons) on the one hand, and an LL of confined mesons on the other. Furthermore, at the interface between these two phases, we uncover a highly frustrated regime arising due to the competition between the local NN repulsion and the non-local confining interactions, realizing a pre-formed parton plasma. Our work is motivated by the recent progress in ultracold atom experiments, where such simple model could be readily implemented. For this reason we calculate the static structure factor which we propose as a simple probe to explore the phase diagram in an experimental setup.

Confined Phases of One-Dimensional Spinless Fermions Coupled to Z2 Gauge Theory

Umberto Borla, Ruben Verresen, Fabian Grusdt +1 more

We investigate a quantum many-body lattice system of one-dimensional spinless fermions interacting with a dynamical Z_{2} gauge field. The gauge field mediates long-range attraction between fermions resulting in their confinement into bosonic dimers. At strong coupling we develop an exactly solvable effective theory of such dimers with emergent constraints. Even at generic coupling and fermion density, the model can be rewritten as a local spin chain. Using the density matrix renormalization group the system is shown to form a Luttinger liquid, indicating the emergence of fractionalized excitations despite the confinement of lattice fermions. In a finite chain we observe the doubling of the period of Friedel oscillations which paves the way towards experimental detection of confinement in this system. We discuss the possibility of a Mott phase at the commensurate filling 2/3.
