Many-particle systems in one dimension in the harmonic approximation

J. R. Armstrong, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner, D. V. Fedorov +1 more

We consider the energetics and structural properties of a many-particle system in one dimension with pairwise contact interactions confined in a parabolic external potential. To render the problem analytically solvable, we use the harmonic approximation scheme at the level of the Hamiltonian. We investigate the scaling with particle number of the ground-state energies for systems consisting of identical bosons or fermions. We then proceed to focus on bosonic systems and make a detailed comparison with known exact results in the absence of the parabolic external trap for three-body systems. We also consider the thermodynamics of the harmonic model, which turns out to be similar for bosons and fermions due to the lack of degeneracy in one dimension.

Impurity immersed in a two-component few-fermion mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Marek Teske, Tomasz Sowiński

We investigate a one-dimensional three-component few-fermion mixture confined in a parabolic external trap, where one component contains a single particle acting as an impurity. Focusing on the many-body ground state, we analyze how the interactions between the impurity and the other components influence the system's structure. For fixed interaction strengths within the mixture, we identify a critical interaction strength with the impurity for which the system undergoes a structural transition characterized by a substantial change in its spatial features. We explore this transition from the point of view of correlations and ground-state susceptibility. We remarkably find that this transition exhibits unique universality features not previously observed in other systems, highlighting novel many-body properties existing in multi-component fermionic mixtures.

Ground-state of interacting bosons in an arbitrary one-dimensional potential: variational approach

Przemysław Kościk, Arkadiusz Kuroś, Adam Pieprzycki +1 more

We derive and describe a very accurate variational scheme for the ground state of the system of a few ultra-cold bosons confined in one-dimensional traps of arbitrary shapes. It is based on assumption that all inter-particle correlations have two-body nature. By construction, the proposed ansatz is exact in the noninteracting limit, exactly encodes boundary conditions forced by contact interactions, and gives full control on accuracy in the limit of infinite repulsions. We show its efficiency in a whole range of intermediate interactions for different external potentials. Our results manifest that for generic non-parabolic potentials mutual correlations forced by interactions cannot be captured by distance-dependent functions.
