Abstract

Zero temperature phase diagram of XXZ spin chain in external magnetic field is investigated at low energies using path integral approach. It has been shown by spin wave analysis and then by nonlinear sigma model transformation that below some critical field the system undergoes quantum Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition.Above that critical field for low anisotropies the system is saturated while at strong anisotropy the system has Ising antiferromagnetic order.

Two-dimensional quantum-spin-1/2 XXZ magnet in zero magnetic field: Global thermodynamics from renormalisation group theory

Ozan S. Sarıyer

Phase diagram, critical properties and thermodynamic functions of the two-dimensional field-free quantum-spin-1/2 XXZ model has been calculated globally using a numerical renormalisation group theory. The nearest-neighbour spin-spin correlations and entanglement properties, as well as internal energy and specific heat are calculated globally at all temperatures for the whole range of exchange interaction anisotropy, from XY limit to Ising limits, for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases. We show that there exists long-range (quasi-long-range) order at low-temperatures, and the low-lying excitations are gapped (gapless) in the Ising-like easy-axis (XY-like easy-plane) regime. Besides, we identify quantum phase transitions at zero-temperature.

Field-free quantum-spin-1/2 XXZ model in three-dimensions:phases, phase transitions, and phase diagrams by renormalization group theory

Ozan S. Sarıyer

The field-free quantum-spin-1/2 XXZ model is studied in three-dimensions using renormalization group theory. We obtain global phase diagrams and critical properties. We identify zero-temperature quantum phase transitions at isotropic points, as well as long-range order below critical temperatures at all anisotropies. We show that the excitation spectrum is gapless in XY-like, and gapped in Ising-like anisotropy regimes. Besides, internal energy density, specific heat, nearest-neighbor entanglement measures and spin-spin correlations are obtained globally at all temperatures. Our numerical results cover the global range of anisotropy parameter, for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic cases.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition of Spin-1 XXZ Chains in a Staggered Magnetic Field

Masayoshi Tsukano, Kiyohide Nomura

Phase diagram of S=1 XXZ chain in a staggered magnetic field is obtained numerically. The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition between the XY and the antiferromagnetic phases is studied by the level-spectroscopy. Moreover we find that there is no distinction between the Haldane and the antiferromagnetic phases, since the Gaussian critical line does not appear, in contrast to the $S=1/2$ case. It is expected that some hidden $Z_2\times Z_2$ symmetry breaking happens not only in the Haldane phase but also in the antiferromagnetic one.

Niederenergetische Anregungen in eindimensionalen Quanten-Antiferromagneten

S. Brehmer

In the present work low energy excitations in various antiferromagnetic systems are investigated. The first part is devoted to the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with two different alternating magnetic ions having spins S A and S B .The system can be characterised as a ferrimagnet with a long range ordered ground state.Linear spin wave theory (LSWT) leads to a qualitatively correct description of two excitation branches. The low energy spectrum contains ferromagnetic magnons which are discussed in the introductory chapter. The LSWT results are compared with the numerical data from exact diagonalisation for the case S A =1 and S B =1/2.In the second part of the thesis, the quantum phase transitions from the Néel phase to the Heisenberg phase and from the Néel phase to the Haldane phase for half-odd-integer spins S =1 /2, 3/2 and integer spins S =1 , 2, respectively, are studied in context of the Haldane conjecture. The models are analysed by means of high-order series expansions for the ground state properties and excitation energies. The expansion parameter is the anisotropy λ where the unperturbed case λ =0corresponds to the Ising model. For the integer-S systems the following scenario is obtained: The phase transitions from the Néel phase to the Haldane phase are determined by the condensation of the so-called spin zero defects (SZD) at finite anisotropy. These domain wall type excitations can be characterised as S z =0states embedded in the antiferromagnetic order. The critical exponents β of the order parameter and η of the correlation function are those of the two-dimensional Ising model. In contrast to the above scenario, the half-odd-integer S =1/2 chain undergoes the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition at the isotropic point. In the case of the S =3/2 chain the critical behaviour of the static structure factor S (zz) (π) is consistent with the exponentially divergent correlation length at the isotropic point. Finally, kink excitations of the S =1 /2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet chain with nearest and next nearest neighbour interactions (the zigzag chain) are investigated. Here a kink is defined as a free spin S =1 /2 mediating two dimerised ground states. The phase diagram of the zigzag chain contains the Majumdar-Ghosh model as well as the S =1/2 spin ladder and the S =1Heisenberg antiferromagnet.Starting from the Majumdar-Ghosh model, a two-kink variational wave function with S tot =1is constructed. The variational parameter is the characteristic distance between the two kinks. The variational wave function describes the low energy triplet excitation of the gapped zigzag chain in a qualitatively correct way.Within this approach, the elementary excitation of the spin ladder as well as the Haldane triplet of the S =1chain appears as a bound state of two kinks. The phase diagram of the zigzag chain contains the incommensurate phase where the wave vector of the lowest mode k 0 runs from k 0 =0to k 0 = π.At the qualitative level, this behaviour is correctly described by the variational approach.

Thermodynamic behavior of theXXZHeisenbergs= 1/2 chain around the factorizing magnetic field

Jahanfar Abouie, A. Langari, Mohammad Siahatgar

We have investigated the zero-and finite-temperature behaviors of the anisotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain in the presence of a transverse magnetic field (h). The attention is concentrated on an interval of magnetic field between the factorizing field (h(f)) and the critical one (h(c)). The model presents a spin-flop phase for 0 < h < h(f) with an energy scale which is defined by the long range antiferromagnetic order while it undergoes an entanglement phase transition at h = h(f). The entanglement estimators clearly show that the entanglement is lost exactly at h = h(f), which justifies different quantum correlations on both sides of the factorizing field. As a consequence of zero entanglement (at h = h(f)) the ground state is known exactly as a product of single-particle states which is the starting point for initiating a spin wave theory. The linear spin wave theory is implemented to obtain the specific heat and thermal entanglement of the model in the interested region. A double-peak structure is found in the specific heat around h = h(f), which manifests the existence of two energy scales in the system as a result of two competing orders before the critical point. These results are confirmed by the low temperature Lanczos data which we have computed.

First-Order Phase Transition in theS=1Quantum Spin Chain with Partial Integrability

Ryutaro Sato, Yasuhiro Akutsu

The zero-temperature magnetization curve of the S =1 antiferromagnetic XXZ chain with partial integrability is studied by the Bethe ansatz, combined with a numerical renormalization-group method. We find a magnetic first-order phase transition; the magnetization curve shows a discontinuity at a critical field h c . Due to the partial integrability, the low-field curve and the high-field curve each correspond to a part of the magnetization curve of the \(S=\frac12\)XXZ chain. We conclude that the obtained magnetization curve is exact in the whole range of the magnetic field.
