Nonlinear coupling between scissors modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract

We explore the nonlinear coupling of the three scissors modes of an anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that only when the frequency of one of the scissors modes is twice the frequency of another scissors mode, these two modes can be resonantly coupled and a down-conversion can occur. We perform the calculation variationally using a gaussian trial wave function. This enables us to obtain simple analytical results that describe the oscillation and resonance behavior of the two coupled modes.

Nonlinear mixing of collective modes in harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Takahiro Mizoguchi, Shohei Watabe, Tetsuro Nikuni

We study nonlinear mixing effects among quadrupole modes and scissors modes in a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. Using a perturbative technique in conjunction with a variational approach with a Gaussian trial wave function for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we find that mode mixing occurs selectively. Our perturbative approach is useful in gaining a qualitative understanding of the recent experiment [M. Yamazaki et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 84, 44001 (2015)], exhibiting a beating phenomenon of the scissors mode as well as a modulation phenomenon of the low-lying quadrupole mode by the high-lying quadrupole mode frequency. Within the second-order treatment of the nonlinear mode coupling terms, our approach predicts all the spectral peaks obtained by the numerical simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Quadrupole and scissors modes and nonlinear mode coupling in trapped two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Kenichi Kasamatsu, Makoto Tsubota, Masahito Ueda

We theoretically investigate quadrupolar collective excitations in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and their nonlinear dynamics associated with harmonic generation and mode coupling. Under the Thomas-Fermi approximation and the quadratic polynomial ansatz for density fluctuations, the linear analysis of the superfluid hydrodynamic equations predicts excitation frequencies of three normal modes constituted from monopole and quadrupole oscillations, and those of three scissors modes. These six modes are bifurcated into in-phase and out-of-phase modes by the intercomponent interaction, yielding the nonlinear dynamics that are absent in a single-component condensate. We obtain analytically the resonance conditions for the second-harmonic generation in terms of the trap aspect ratio and the strength of intercomponent interaction. The numerical simulation of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations vindicates the validity of the analytical results and reveals the dynamics of the second-harmonic generation and nonlinear mode coupling that lead to nonlinear oscillations of the condensate with damping and recurrence reminiscent of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem.

Scissors mode of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

Marco Cozzini, S. Stringari, Vincent Bretin +2 more

A scissors mode of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The condensate is confined in an axisymmetric harmonic trap, superimposed with a small rotating deformation. For angular velocities larger than ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}/\sqrt{2},$ where ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ is the radial trap frequency, the frequency of the scissors mode is predicted to vanish like the square root of the deformation, due to the tendency of the system to exhibit spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking. Measurements of the frequency confirm the predictions of theory. Accompanying characteristic oscillations of the internal shape of the condensate are also calculated and observed experimentally.

Finite-Temperature Simulations of the Scissors Mode in Bose-Einstein Condensed Gases

B. Jackson, E. Zaremba

The dynamics of a trapped Bose-condensed gas at finite temperatures is described by a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate order parameter and a semiclassical kinetic equation for the thermal cloud, solved using N-body simulations. The two components are coupled by mean fields as well as collisional processes that transfer atoms between the two. We use this scheme to investigate scissors modes in anisotropic traps as a function of temperature. Frequency shifts and damping rates of the condensate mode are extracted, and are found to be in good agreement with recent experiments.

Observation of the Scissors Mode and Evidence for Superfluidity of a Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensed Gas

Onofrio M. Maragò, S. A. Hopkins, J. Arlt +3 more

We report the observation of the scissors mode of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas of 87Rb atoms in a magnetic trap, which gives direct evidence of superfluidity in this system. The scissors mode of oscillation is excited by a sudden rotation of the anisotropic trapping potential. For a gas above T(c) (normal fluid) we detect the occurrence of oscillations at two frequencies, with the lower frequency corresponding to the rigid body value of the moment of inertia. Well below T(c) the condensate oscillates at a single frequency, without damping, as expected for a superfluid.

Scissors mode of an expanding Bose-Einstein condensate

Michele Modugno, Giovanni Carlo Modugno, G. Roati +2 more

We study the scissors mode of a free-expanding Bose-Einstein condensate. We find that the irrotational character of the superfluid flow within the condensate has dramatic consequences on the evolution of the scissors oscillation. After a short expansion the oscillation is amplified and distorted, while asymptotically it recovers its initial sinusoidal behavior, with an enhanced amplitude. We investigate this phenomenon by using a technique to excite the scissors mode in a condensate held in a magnetostatic potential.
