Abstract

We investigate the behavior of antiferromagnetic integer-spin chains in a staggered magnetic field, by means of the density-matrix renormalization group, carefully addressing the role of finite-size effects within the Haldane phase at small fields. In the case of spin $S=2,$ we determine the dependence of the ground-state energy and magnetization on the external field, in the thermodynamic limit, and show how the peculiar finite-size behavior can be connected with the crossover in the ground state from a spin liquid to a polarized N\'eel state.

Crossover behavior of the J1−J2 model in a staggered magnetic field

Hiromi Otsuka

The ground states of the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain with the nearest-neighbor and the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings are numerically investigated in a staggered magnetic field. While the staggered magnetic field may induce the N\'eel-type excitation gap, and it is characterized by the Gaussian fixed point in the spin-fluid region, the crossover to the behavior controlled by the Ising fixed point is expected to be observed for the spontaneously dimerized state at finite field. Treating a low-lying excitation gap by the phenomenological renormalization-group method, we numerically determine the massless flow connecting the Gaussian and Ising fixed points. Further, to check the criticalities, we perform the finite-size-scaling analysis of the excitation gap.

Field-induced gap in the spin- 12 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain: A density-matrix renormalization-group study

Jizhong Lou, Shaojin Qin, Changfeng Chen +2 more

We study the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in both uniform and (perpendicular) staggered magnetic fields using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. This model has been shown earlier to describe the physics of the copper benzoate materials in magnetic field. In the present work, we extend the study to more general case for a systematic investigation of the field-induced gap and related properties of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In particular, we explore the high magnetic field regime where interesting behaviors in the field-induced gap, magnetization, and spin correlation functions are found. Careful examination of the low energy properties and magnetization reveals interesting competing effects of the staggered and uniform fields. The incommensurate behavior in the spin correlation functions is demonstrated and discussed in detail. The present work reproduces earlier results in good agreement with experimental data on copper benzoate and predicts new interesting field-induced features at very high magnetic field.

Heisenberg spin-1 chain in a staggered magnetic field: A density-matrix-renormalization-group study

Jizhong Lou, Xi Dai, Shaojin Qin +2 more

Using the density-matrix-renormalization-group technique, we calculate numerically the low-energy excitation spectrum and magnetization curve of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain in a staggered magnetic field, which is expected to describe the physics of the ${R}_{2}{\mathrm{BaNiO}}_{5} (R\ensuremath{\ne}Y)$ family below the N\'eel temperature of the magnetic rare-earth (R) sublattice. These results are valid in the entire range of the staggered field, and agree with those given by the nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ model study for small fields, but differ from the latter for large fields. They are consistent with the available experimental data. The correlation functions for this model are also calculated. The transverse correlations display the anticipated exponential decay with shorter correlation length, while the longitudinal correlations show explicitly the induced staggered magnetization.

S=2 antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain

Ulrich Schollwöck, O. Golinelli, Th. Jolicœur

We have investigated Haldane's conjecture for the S=2 antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain with nearest-neighbor exchange J. Using a density matrix renormalization group algorithm for chains up to L=350 spins, we find in the thermodynamic limit a finite gap of \ensuremath{\Delta}=0.085(5)J and a finite spin-spin correlation length \ensuremath{\xi}=49(1) lattice spacings. We have confirmed the gap value by a zero-temperature quantum Monte Carlo study. We show that the ground state has a hidden topological order that is revealed in a nonlocal string correlation function which saturates to a nonzero value in the thermodynamic limit. We investigate the behavior of the spin-2 chain under an easy-plane anisotropy D(${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{i}}^{\mathit{z}}$${)}^{2}$, D\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0, and find that the Haldane and the large-D phase are separated by an XY phase. The string correlation function vanishes only in the D\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty} limit and does not distinguish between the Haldane phase and the perturbative large-D phase. An analysis of the transition mechanism and of the S=2 phase diagram in the presence of easy-plane and exchange anisotropy, markedly different from the S=1 phase diagram, allow us to conjecture how the classical limit is reached from increasing integer spins. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Antiferromagnetic zigzag spin chain in magnetic fields at finite temperatures

Nobuya Maeshima, Kouichi Okunishi

We study thermodynamic behaviors of the antiferromagnetic zigzag spin chain in magnetic fields, using the density-matrix renormalization-group method for the quantum transfer matrix. We focus on the thermodynamics of the system near the critical fields in the ground-state magnetization process $(M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve): the saturation field, the lower critical field associated with excitation gap, and the field at the middle-field cusp singularity. We calculate magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat of the zigzag chain in magnetic fields at finite temperatures, and then discuss how the calculated quantities reflect the low-lying excitations of the system related with the critical behaviors in the $M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve.

Physics of integer-spin antiferromagnetic chains: Haldane gaps and edge states

Th. Jolicœur, O. Golinelli

The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain with integer spin has a short-range magnetic order and an excitation energy gap above the ground state. This so-called Haldane gap is proportional to the exchange coupling constant J of the Heisenberg chain. In this study, we discuss recent results about the spin dependence of the Haldane gap and conjecture an analytical formula valid asymptotically for large spin values. We then discuss the robustness of the edge states of the spin-1 chain by studying a spin-1 ladder using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. We show that the peculiar hidden topological order of the spin-1 chain disappears smoothly by increasing the ladder rung coupling without any intervening phase transition. This is evidence for the fragile character of the topological order of the spin-1 chain.
