Abstract

For a quantum system coupled to a heat bath environment the strong friction limit is studied starting from the exact path integral formulation. Generalizing the classical Smoluchowski limit to low temperatures, a time evolution equation for the position distribution is derived and the strong role of quantum fluctuations in this limit is revealed.

Quantum Brownian motion with large friction

Joachim Ankerhold, Hermann Grabert, Philip Pechukas

Quantum Brownian motion in the strong friction limit is studied based on the exact path integral formulation of dissipative systems. In this limit the time-nonlocal reduced dynamics can be cast into an effective equation of motion, the quantum Smoluchowski equation. For strongly condensed phase environments it plays a similar role as master equations in the weak coupling range. Applications for chemical, mesoscopic, and soft matter systems are discussed and reveal the substantial role of quantum fluctuations.

Quantum Smoluchowski equation: A systematic study

Stefan Alexander Maier, Joachim Ankerhold

The strong-friction regime at low temperatures is analyzed systematically starting from the formally exact path-integral expression for the reduced dynamics. This quantum Smoluchowski regime allows for a type of semiclassical treatment in the inverse friction strength so that higher-order quantum corrections to the original quantum Smoluchowski equation [J. Ankerhold, P. Pechukas, and H. Grabert, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 086802 (2001); J. Ankerhold and H. Grabert, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 119903 (2008)] can be derived. Drift and diffusion coefficients are determined by the equilibrium distribution in position and are directly related to the corresponding action of extremal paths and fluctuations around them. It is shown that the inclusion of higher-order corrections reproduces the quantum enhancement above crossover for the decay rate out of a metastable well exactly.

Quantum Smoluchowski equation for driven systems

Raoul Dillenschneider, Eric Lutz

We consider a driven quantum harmonic oscillator strongly coupled to a heat bath. Starting from the exact quantum Langevin equation, we use a Green's function approach to determine the corresponding semiclassical equation for the Wigner phase space distribution. In the limit of high friction and high temperature, we apply Brinkman's method to derive the quantum Smoluchowski equation for the probability distribution in position space. We further determine the range of validity of the equation and discuss the special case of a Brownian parametric oscillator.

Quantum Smoluchowski equation: Escape from a metastable state

Dhruba Banerjee, Bidhan Chandra Bag, Ra Bag B +2 more

We develop a quantum Smoluchowski equation in terms of a true probability distribution function to describe quantum Brownian motion in configuration space in large friction limit at arbitrary temperature and derive the rate of barrier crossing and tunneling within a unified scheme. The present treatment is independent of path integral formalism and is based on canonical quantization procedure.

Quantum Tunneling at Zero Temperature in the Strong Friction Regime

A. O. Bolivar

In the large damping limit we derive a Fokker-Planck equation in configuration space (the so-called Smoluchowski equation) describing a Brownian particle immersed into a thermal environment and subjected to a nonlinear external force. We quantize this stochastic system and survey the problem of escape over a double-well potential barrier. Our finding is that the quantum Kramers rate does not depend on the friction coefficient at low temperatures; i.e., we predict a superfluidity phenomenon in overdamped open systems. Moreover, at zero temperature we show that the quantum escape rate does not vanish in the strong friction regime. This result, therefore, is in contrast with the work by Ankerhold et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 086802 (2001)]] in which no quantum tunneling is predicted at zero temperature.

Quantum fluctuation theorems in the strong damping limit

Sebastian Deffner, Michael Brunner, Eric Lutz

We consider a driven quantum particle in the strong friction regime described by the quantum Smoluchowski equation. We derive Crooks and Jarzynski type relations for the reduced quantum system by properly generalizing the entropy production to take into account the non-Gibbsian character of the equilibrium distribution. In the case of a nonequilibrium steady state, we obtain a quantum version of the Hatano-Sasa relation. We further propose an experiment with driven Josephson junctions that would allow to investigate nonequilibrium entropy fluctuations in overdamped quantum systems.
