Abstract

The $S=1/2$ and $S=1$ two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the anisotropic dimerized square lattice are investigated by the quantum Monte Carlo method. By finite-size-scaling analyses on the correlation lengths, the ground-state phase diagram parametrized by strengths of the dimerization and of the spatial anisotropy is determined much more accurately than the previous works. It is confirmed that the quantum critical phenomena on the phase boundaries belong to the same universality class as that of the classical three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Furthermore, for $S=1,$ we show that all the spin-gapped phases, such as the Haldane and dimer phases, are adiabatically connected in the extended-parameter space, though they are classified into different classes in terms of the string order parameter in the one-dimensional, i.e., the zero-interchain-coupling, case.

Anomalous scaling corrections and quantum phase diagram of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the spatially anisotropic honeycomb lattice

Alexander Sushchyev, Stefan Weßel

Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we determine the ground state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice for the most generic case of three varying interaction strengths along the different lattice directions. We identify continuous quantum phase transition lines that separate the long-range ordered antiferromagnetic regime from three distinct quantum-disordered phases, each characterized by dominant dimer-singlet formations. The finite-size behavior along these phase transition lines exhibits anomalously large corrections to scaling, which we relate to similar recent findings in certain dimerized quantum spin systems and to singular one-dimensional limits in the model parameter space. We also comment more generally on the nonuniversality of critical cumulant ratios in anisotropic systems and attempts to restore universality by varying the aspect ratio.

Dimerized Phase and Transitions in a Spatially Anisotropic Square Lattice Antiferromagnet

Oleg A. Starykh, Leon Balents

We investigate the spatially anisotropic square lattice quantum antiferromagnet. The model describes isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains (exchange constant J) coupled antiferromagnetically in the transverse (J( perpendicular )) and diagonal (J(x)), with respect to the chain, directions. Classically, the model admits two ordered ground states-with antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interchain spin correlations-separated by a first-order phase transition at J( perpendicular )=2J(x). We show that in the quantum model this transition splits into two, revealing an intermediate quantum-disordered columnar dimer phase, both in two dimensions and in a simpler two-leg ladder version. We describe quantum-critical points separating this spontaneously dimerized phase from classical ones.

Quantum phase transitions in theJ-J' Heisenberg andXYspin-½ antiferromagnets on a square lattice: finite-size scaling analysis

Piotr Tomczak, Johannes Richter

We investigate the critical parameters of an order-disorder quantum phase transition in the spin-½ J - J ' Heisenberg and XY antiferromagnets on a square lattice. Based on the excitation gaps calculated by the exact diagonalization technique for systems up to 32 spins and finite-size scaling analysis we estimate the critical couplings and exponents of the correlation length for both models. Our analysis confirms the universal critical behaviour of these quantum phase transitions: they belong to 3D O(3) and 3D O(2) universality classes, respectively.

Phase Diagram ofS=1/2 Quasi-One-Dimensional Heisenberg Model with Dimerized Antiferromagnetic Exchange

Nobuyuki Katoh, Masatoshi Imada

The quantum phase transition between a spin gap state and an antiferromagnetic phase is investigated. We study S =1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains coupled by antiferromagnetic interchain interaction. The intrachain exchanges have alternating strength. The phase boundary between the antiferromagnetically ordered phase and a spin gap phase is also obtained in a parameter space of the amplitude of the interchain coupling and the dimerization. The spin-wave approximation substantially overestimates the antiferromagnetic phase. The competition between the long range order and the spin gap is examined in detail. We estimate a variety of critical exponents at the transition, namely, exponents ν, θ and z defined as the exponent of the correlation length, the magnetization curve and the dynamical exponent, respectively. From the quantum Monte Carlo simulation, the exponents ν, θ and z are estimated to be unity. The exponents ν and θ are different from the estimated values in one dimension. It suggests that the universality changes due to the dimensionality change. In our estimates, the exponent ν does not agree with the prediction from three dimensional classical Heisenberg model. We also discuss the relevance of our result to spin-Peierls systems with lattice distortion.

Ground state phase diagram and Haldane-like symmetry-protected phase in the S = 1 2 Heisenberg model on the two-dimensional square-hexagon-octagon lattice

Yumeng Luo, Yuehong Li, Mengfan Jiang +4 more

Using stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo and density matrix renormalization group methods, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the two-dimensional square-hexagon-octagon (SHO) lattice. The model incorporates nearest-neighbor interactions $J_1$ (intrahexagon interaction) and $J_2$ (interhexagon), as well as a selected third-neighbor interaction $J_3$ along the $x$ direction. We identify five distinct phases in the parameter regime $0<λ_1=J_2/J_1<4, 0<λ_2=J_3/J_1<4$: a Néel antiferromagentic phase, two dimer phases (orthogonal and ladder staggered dimers), a hexagon singlet phase, and notably a Haldane-like symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase. The topological nature of the Haldane-like phase is confirmed by the degeneracy of the ground-state energy under open boundary conditions and the twofold degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum. Phase boundaries are accurately determined using finite-size scaling of the spin stiffness and Binder cumulant. Data collapse analysis reveals that all transitions from nonmagnetic phases to the antiferromagnetic phase belong to the three-dimensional $O(3)$ Heisenberg universality class. In addition, we investigate the robustness of the SPT phase to other interactions, such as those that could arise in experimental materials. Our work establishes a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding magnetic and topological phases on the SHO lattice.

Evidence for an Unconventional Universality Class from a Two-Dimensional Dimerized Quantum Heisenberg Model

S. C. Wenzel, L. Bogacz, Wolfhard Janke E

The two-dimensional $J\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ dimerized quantum Heisenberg model is studied on the square lattice by means of (stochastic series expansion) quantum Monte Carlo simulations as a function of the coupling ratio $\ensuremath{\alpha}={J}^{\ensuremath{'}}/J$. The critical point of the order-disorder quantum phase transition in the $J\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ model is determined as ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}=2.5196(2)$ by finite-size scaling for up to approximately 10 000 quantum spins. By comparing six dimerized models we show, contrary to the current belief, that the critical exponents of the $J\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ model are not in agreement with the three-dimensional classical Heisenberg universality class. This lends support to the notion of nontrivial critical excitations at the quantum critical point.
