Discrete Solitons and Breathers with Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract

We study the dynamical phase diagram of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a periodic potential. The dynamics is governed by a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation: intrinsically localized excitations, including discrete solitons and breathers, can be created even if the BEC's interatomic potential is repulsive. Furthermore, we analyze the Anderson-Kasevich experiment [Science 282, 1686 (1998)], pointing out that mean field effects lead to a coherent destruction of the interwell Bloch oscillations.

Discrete breathers in Bose–Einstein condensates

Roberto Franzosi, Roberto Livi, Gian‐Luca Oppo +1 more

Discrete breathers, originally introduced in the context of biopolymers and coupled nonlinear oscillators, are also localized modes of excitation of Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC) in periodic potentials such as those generated by counter-propagating laser beams in an optical lattice. Static and dynamical properties of breather states are analysed in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation that is derived in the limit of deep potential wells, tight-binding and the superfluid regime of the condensate. Static and mobile breathers can be formed by progressive re-shaping of initial Gaussian wave-packets or by transporting atomic density towards dissipative boundaries of the lattice. Static breathers generated via boundary dissipations are determined via a transfer-matrix approach and discussed in the two analytic limits of highly localized and very broad profiles. Mobile breathers that move across the lattice are well approximated by modified analytical expressions derived from integrable models with two independent parameters: the core-phase gradient and the peak amplitude. Finally, possible experimental realizations of discrete breathers in BEC in optical lattices are discussed in the presence of residual harmonic trapping and in interferometry configurations suitable to investigate discrete breathers' interactions.

Localization of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Roberto Franzosi, S. M. Giampaolo, Fabrizio Illuminati +3 more

Abstract The dynamics of repulsive bosons condensed in an optical lattice is effectively described by the Bose-Hubbard model. The classical limit of this model, reproduces the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates, in a periodic potential, and in the superfluid regime. Such dynamics is governed by a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Several papers, addressing the study of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger dynamics, have predicted the spontaneous generation of (classical) breathers in coupled condensates. In the present contribute, we shall focus on localized solutions (quantum breathers) of the full Bose-Hubbard model. We will show that solutions exponentially localized in space and periodic in time exist also in absence of randomness. Thus, this kind of states, reproduce a novel quantum localization phenomenon due to the interplay between bounded energy spectrum and non-linearity.

Collision of discrete breathers in two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Russell Campbell, Mateusz Borkowski, Gian‐Luca Oppo

The properties of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) can be studied and controlled effectively when trapped in optical lattices. In the limit of tight binding, BEC in optical lattices are well described by the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLSE). Spatially localised modes of excitations, known as discrete breathers or lattice solitons, can occur in the DNLSE. These have been shown to evolve from initial conditions of Gaussian wave-packets. Using this method with the addition of an initial momentum, mobile breathers that travel across the lattice with a constant velocity can also be formed.

Discrete breathers in BEC with two- and three-body interactions in optical lattice

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Bouketir, Azeddine Messikh +1 more

We investigate the properties of discrete breathers in a Bose-Einstein condensate with two- and three-body interactions in optical lattice. In the tight-binding approximation the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with periodic potential for the condensate wavefunction is reduced to the cubic-quintic discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We analyze the regions of modulational instabilities of nonlinear plane waves. This result is important to obtain the conditions for generation of discrete solitons(breathers) in optical lattice. Also using the Page approach, we derive the conditions for the existence and stability for bright discrete breather solutions. It is shown that the quintic nonlinearity brings qualitatively new conditions for stability of strongly localized modes. The numerical simulations conform with the analytical predictions.

Dimers and discrete breathers in Bose-Einstein condensates in a quasi-periodic potential

V. V. Konotop

A quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a quasi-periodic potential created by two sublattices of comparable amplitudes and incommensurate periods is considered. Although the conventional tight-binding approximation is not applicable in this setting, the description can still be reduced to a discrete model that accounts for the modes below the mobility edge. In the respective discrete lattice, where no linear hopping exists, solutions and their dynamics are governed solely by nonlinear interactions. Families of nonlinear modes, including those with no linear limit, are described with a special focus on dimers, which correspond to breather solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a quasi-periodic potential. The breathers are found to be stable for negative scattering lengths. Localization and stable propagation of breathers are also observed for positive scattering lengths at relatively weak and moderate nonlinearities. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Self-localization of Bose–Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Johannes Kruse, Ragnar Fleischmann

Abstract Mean field and beyond mean field model calculations of Bose–Einstein condensates trapped in optical lattices have shown that initially homogeneous condensates can evolve into self-trapped, strongly localized states in the presence of weak boundary dissipation, a phenomenon called self-localization . A dynamical phase transition from extended to localized states can be observed when the effective nonlinearity exceeds a critical threshold Λ eff c . We investigate this phase transition to self-localization in the mean field approximation of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We quantitatively characterize the properties of the discrete breathers , i.e. the nonlinear localized solutions, at the phase transition. This leads us to propose and numerically verify an analytical lower bound Λ eff L for the critical nonlinearity based on the idea of self-induced Anderson localization.
