First temperature corrections to the Fermi-liquid fixed point in two dimensions

Abstract

We calculate, using perturbative calculations and Ward identities, the basic parameters of the Fermi liquid: the scattering vertex, the Landau interaction function, the effective mass, specific heat, and physical susceptibilities for a model of two-dimensional (2D) fermions with a short-ranged interaction at nonzero temperature. The leading temperature dependence of the spin components of the scattering vertex, the Landau function, and the spin susceptibility is found to be linear. We find that the standard $T=0$ relationships for a Galilean-invariant Fermi liquid are violated by finite-temperature terms. The coefficients in the temperature corrections to these relationships involve a subtle interplay between contributions from small and large $(\ensuremath{\sim}{2k}_{F})$ momentum processes. A connection with previous studies of the 2D Fermi-liquid parameters is discussed. We conclude that the linear leading temperature dependence of the parameters is a generic feature of the 2D Fermi liquid.

Leading Temperature Corrections to Fermi-Liquid Theory in Two Dimensions

Gennady Y. Chitov, Andrew J. Millis

We calculate the basic parameters of the Fermi liquid: the scattering vertex, the Landau interaction function, the effective mass, and physical susceptibilities for a model of two-dimensional (2D) fermions with a short-ranged interaction at nonzero temperature. The leading temperature dependences of the spin components of the scattering vertex, the Landau function, and the spin susceptibility are found to be linear. T-linear terms in the effective mass and in the "charge-sector" quantities are found to cancel to second order in the interaction, but the cancellation is argued not to be generic. The connection with previous studies of the 2D Fermi-liquid parameters is discussed.

Nonanalytic corrections to the specific heat of a three-dimensional Fermi liquid

Andrey V. Chubukov, Dmitrii L. Maslov, Andrew J. Millis

We revisit the issue of the leading nonanalytic corrections to the temperature dependence of the specific heat coefficient, $\ensuremath{\gamma}(T)=C(T)∕T$, for a system of interacting fermions in three dimensions. We show that the leading temperature dependence of the specific heat coefficient $\ensuremath{\gamma}(T)\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}(0)\ensuremath{\propto}{T}^{3}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ln}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}T$ comes from two physically distinct processes. The first process involves a thermal excitation of a single particle-hole pair, whose components interact via a nonanalytic dynamic vertex. The second process involves an excitation of three particle-hole pairs which interact via the analytic static fixed-point vertex. We show that the single-pair contribution is expressed via the backscattering amplitude of quasiparticles at the Fermi surface. The three-pair contribution does not have a simple expression in terms of scattering in particular directions. We clarify the relation between these results and previous literature on both 3D and 2D systems, and discuss the relation between the nonanalyticities in $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and those in spin susceptibilities.

Thermodynamics of a Fermi Liquid beyond the Low-Energy Limit

Andrey V. Chubukov, Dmitrii L. Maslov, Suhas Gangadharaiah +1 more

We consider the nonanalytic temperature dependences of the specific heat coefficient, C(T)/T, and spin susceptibility, chi(s)(T), of 2D interacting fermions beyond the weak-coupling limit. We demonstrate within the Luttinger-Ward formalism that the leading temperature dependences of C(T)/T and chi(s)(T) are linear in T, and are described by the Fermi liquid theory. We show that these temperature dependences are universally determined by the states near the Fermi level and, for a generic interaction, are expressed via the spin and charge components of the exact backscattering amplitude of quasiparticles. We compare our theory to recent experiments on monolayers of He3.

The Fermi liquid as a renormalization group fixed point

Guennadi Chitov

The renormalization-group (RG) method is applied to study interacting fermions at finite temperature. A model based on the [psi][superscript]4-Grassmann effective action with SU(N )-invariant short-range interaction and a rotationally invariant Fermi surface in spatial dimensions d = 2, 3 is studied. We show how the key results of the Landau Fermi liquid theory can be recovered by this finite-temperature RG technique. Applying the RG to response functions, we find the compressibility and the spin susceptibility as solutions of the RG flow equations. We discuss subtleties associated with the symmetry properties of the four-point vertex (the implications of the Pauli principle). We point out distinctions between three quantities: the bare interaction of the low-energy effective action, the Landau function and the forward scattering vertex. The bare interaction of the effective action is not a RG fixed point, but a common starting point of the flow trajectories of two limiting forms of the four-point vertex. We have derived RG equations for the Landau channel that take into account both contributions of the direct (ZS) and the exchange (ZS' ) particle-hole graphs at one-loop level. The basic quantities of Fermi Liquid theory, the Landau interaction function and the forward scattering vertex, are calculated as fixed points of these flows in terms of the effective action's interaction function. The classic derivations of Fermi Liquid theory applying the Bethe-Salpeter equation and other analogous approaches, tantamount to some sort of RPA-type (decoupled) approximation, neglect the zero-angle singularity in the ZS' graph. As a consequence, the antisymmetry of the forward scattering vertex is not guaranteed in the final result, and the RPA sum rule must be imposed by hand on the components of the Landau function to satisfy the Pauli principle. This sum rule, not indispensable in the original phenomenological formulation of the Landau FLT, is equivalent, from the RG point of view, to a fine tuning of the effective interaction. Our results show that the strong interference of the direct and exchange processes of the particle-hole scattering near zero angle invalidates the RPA (decoupled) approximation in this region, resulting in temperature-dependent narrow-angle anomalies in the Landau function and scattering vertex, revealed by the RG analysis. In the present RG approach the Pauli principle is automatically satisfied. As follows from the RG solution, the amplitude sum rule, being an artefact of the RPA approximation, is not needed to respect statistics and, moreover, is not valid.

Singular corrections to the Fermi liquid theory

Andrey V. Chubukov, Dmitrii L. Maslov

We show that the singularities in the dynamical bosonic response functions of a two-dimensional Fermi liquid give rise to universal nonanalytic corrections to the results of the Fermi-liquid theory. In particular, we find a ${T}^{2}$ term in the specific heat, linear-in-$T$ terms in the effective mass and in the uniform spin susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{s}(Q=0,T),$ and $|Q|$ term in ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{s}(Q,T=0).$ The existence of these terms has been the subject of recent controversy, which is resolved in this paper. We present exact expressions for all nonanalytic terms to second order in a generic interaction $U(Q)$ and show that the nonanalytic terms originate exclusively from forward- and backward-scattering of particles with zero total momentum.
