White-Scalapino-like stripes in a mean-field Hubbard model

Abstract

In stripe phases, a ``hidden order'' can exist as an order parameter on the charged stripes. A simple example arises in an unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculation of the Hubbard model, where a (metastable) solution is found which closely resembles the stripe phase of White and Scalapino. By comparison with uniform mean-field solutions, it is demonstrated that this phase develops from phase separation, and the order on the charged stripes is identified. The interface surface tension becomes negative for sufficiently narrow stripes, at which point the stripes begin to meander, gradually crossing from vertical to diagonal with decreasing doping.

Stripe Orders in the Extended Hubbard Model

Taira Kato, Masaru Kato

We study stripe orders of charge and spin density waves in the extended Hubbard model with the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion V within the mean field approximation. We obtain V vs. T(temperature) phase diagram for the on-site Coulomb interaction U/t=8.0 and the filling n=0.8, here t is a nearest-neighbor transfer energy. Our result shows that the diagonal stripe spin density wave state (SDW) is stable for small V, but for large V the most stable state changes to a charge density wave-antiferromagnetic (CDW-AF) state. Especially we find at low temperature and for a certain range of value of V, a vertical stripe CDW-AF state becomes stable.

PHASE SEPARATION IN THE TWO-DIMENSIONAL HUBBARD MODEL

M. YU, Hua Lin

In this paper, we study phase separation in the two-dimensional single-band Hubbard model with the unrestricted Hartree-Fock(UHF) method and the restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) method. We perform the calculation for square lattices and rectangle lattices. It is observed that the stripe phase exists and it depends on three aspects: geometry of the lattice, Coulomb interaction U and band filling n. To gain more physical insights, we consider the Hubbard model with spin dependent hoppings: t↑ and t↓, and study the effect of varying [Formula: see text] on the phase separation.

Comprehensive mean-field analysis of magnetic and charge orders in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Robin Scholle, Pietro M. Bonetti, Demetrio Vilardi +1 more

We present an unbiased mean-field analysis of magnetic and charge orders in the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice, at both zero and finite temperatures. Unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations on large finite lattices are complemented by solutions restricted to N\'eel and circular spiral order in the thermodynamic limit. The magnetic states are classified by a systematic scheme based on the dominant Fourier components of the spin texture. On finite lattices a whole zoo of ordering patterns appears. We show that many of these states are finite-size artifacts related to the limited choice of ordering wave vectors on a finite lattice. In the thermodynamic limit only three classes of states with a relatively simple structure survive: N\'eel, circular spiral, and stripe states. Stripes involve also charge order and can be unidirectional or bidirectional, with horizontal and/or vertical orientation. We present complete phase diagrams in the plane spanned by electron density and temperature, for a moderate Hubbard interaction and various choices of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude.

Spiral to stripe transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Robin Scholle, Walter Metzner, Demetrio Vilardi +1 more

We obtain an almost complete understanding of the mean-field phase diagram of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice with a sizable next-nearest-neighbor hopping and a moderate interaction strength. In particular, we clarify the nature of the transition region between the spiral and the stripe phase. Complementing previous [] real-space Hartree-Fock calculations on large finite lattices, we solve the mean-field equations for coplanar unidirectional magnetic order directly in the thermodynamic limit, and we determine the nature of the magnetic states right below the mean-field critical temperature T * by a Landau free-energy analysis. While the magnetic order for filling factors n ≥ 1 is always of Néel type, for n ≤ 1 the following sequence of magnetic states is found as a function of increasing hole-doping: Néel, planar circular spiral, multispiral, and collinear spin-charge stripe states. Multispiral states are superpositions of several spirals with distinct wave vectors, and lead to concomitant charge order. We finally point out that nematic and charge orders inherited from the magnetic order can survive even in the presence of fluctuations, and we present a corresponding qualitative phase diagram. Spectral properties and pseudogap in the stripe phases of cuprate superconductors

Marcus Fleck, Alexander I. Lichtenstein, Andrzej M. Oleś

Using an exact diagonalization method within the dynamical mean-field theory we analyze the stable stripe structures found in the two-dimensional Hubbard model doped by $0.03<\ensuremath{\delta}<0.2$ holes, and discuss a scenario for stripe melting. Our results demonstrate the importance of dynamical correlations which lead to the metallic stripes, in contrast to the Hartree-Fock picture. The spectral functions show a coexistence of the coherent quasiparticles (polaron band) close to the Fermi energy \ensuremath{\mu}, and incoherent states at lower energies. The quasiparticles in the polaron band depend on hole doping, and hybridize strongly with the partly filled mid-gap band within the Mott-Hubbard gap, induced by stripe order. This explains the origin of nondispersive quasiparticles close to the Fermi energy \ensuremath{\mu}, observed near the $X=(\ensuremath{\pi},0)$ and $Y=(0,\ensuremath{\pi})$ points for the samples with coexisting (10) and (01) stripes. We reproduce the gap which opens for charge excitations at the $S=(\ensuremath{\pi}/2,\ensuremath{\pi}/2)$ point, observed in the angle-resolved photoemission experiments for ${\mathrm{La}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{x}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4},$ and a pseudogap in the integrated spectral density pinned to \ensuremath{\mu}. Finally, we show that large spectral weight close to $\ensuremath{\mu}$ moves from the X to the S point when the second neighbor hopping element increases, and the (01) stripe phase is destabilized by kink fluctuations.

Stripe Formation in Electron-Doped Cuprates

A. Sadori, M. Grilli

We investigate the formation of charge domain walls in an electron-doped extended Hubbard model for the superconducting cuprates. Within an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach, extended by slave bosons to obtain a better treatment of strong correlations, we demonstrate the occurrence of stripes in the (1,1) and (1,-1) directions having one doped electron per stripe site. The different filling, direction, and width of these electron-doped stripes with respect to those obtained in the hole-doped systems have interesting observable consequences.
