Strong Coupling Theory for Driven Tunneling and Vibrational Relaxation

Michael Thorwart, Milena Grifoni, Peter Hänggi A

We investigate on a unified basis tunneling and vibrational relaxation in driven dissipative multistable systems described by their N lowest lying unperturbed levels. By use of the discrete variable representation we derive a set of coupled non-Markovian master equations. We present analytical treatments that describe the dynamics in the regime of strong system-bath coupling. Our findings are corroborated by "ab initio" real-time path integral calculations.

Tunneling and vibrational relaxation in driven multi-level systems

Michael Thorwart, Milena Grifoni, Peter Hänggi A

We investigate on a unified basis tunneling and vibrational relaxation in driven dissipative multi-stable systems described by their N lowest lying unperturbed levels. By use of the discrete variable representation} we derive a set of coupled non-Markovian master equations. We present analytical treatments that well describe the dynamics as long as the friction strength does not exceed level-broadening amongst neighbouring doublets or the temperature is not too low. This is corroborated by ``ab-initio'' real-time path integral calculations.

Quantum tunneling effect on switching rates of bistable driven system

N. S. Maslova, Evgeny V. Anikin, Vladimir N. Mantsevich +2 more

Abstract The influence of quantum tunneling effects on the bistability of nonlinear resonantly driven oscillators in the presence of external noise is analyzed by means of the generalized Fokker–Planck equation in quasi-energy space. Two time scales responsible for different stages of bistable system relaxation have been revealed. It was found that quantum tunneling effects could strongly change the switching rates between different stable states and considerably enhance occupation of the stable state with higher amplitude. It was also revealed that tunneling between nearly degenerate quasi-energy states and resonant multi-photon transitions between the genuine eigenstates of the nonlinear oscillator are just similar effects.
