Quasicondensate and superfluid fraction in the two-dimensional charged boson gas at finite temperature

Abstract

The Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations are solved for the Coulomb Bose gas describing a fluid of charged bosons at finite temperature. The approach is applicable in the weak-coupling regime and the extent of its quantitative usefulness is tested in the three-dimensional fluid, for which diffusion Monte Carlo data are available on the condensate fraction at zero temperature. The one-body density matrix is then evaluated by the same approach for the two-dimensional fluid with ${e}^{2}/r$ interactions, to demonstrate the presence of a quasicondensate from its power-law decay with increasing distance and to evaluate the superfluid fraction as a function of temperature at weak coupling.

Condensate of a charged boson fluid at non-integer dimensions

Sang-Hoon Kim, Chul Koo Kim, Kyun Nahm

Condensate of a charged boson fluid at non-integer dimensions between 2 and 3 is studied. Interaction between particles is assumed to be Coulombic, and Bogoliubov approximation is applied for a weak coupling regime. The condensate and the superfluid fraction at finite temperatures and at non-integer dimensions are calculated. The theoretical results are compared with the superfluid densities of superconducting films, which show a universal splitting behavior. The qualitative similarity between the charged boson fluid and the superconducting films gives a strong clue for the origin of the universality.

Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory of a charged Bose gas at finite temperature

B. Davoudi, Anna Minguzzi, M. P. Tosi

We critically examine the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) solution of the equations of motion for condensate fluctuations in a weakly coupled plasma of charged bosons at finite temperature. Analytic expressions are derived for the first two infrared-divergent terms in both the momentum distribution of the noncondensate and the anomalous Bose correlation function at low momenta. Incorporation into the theory of the appropriate form of the Hugenholtz-Pines relation for the chemical potential is needed to cancel an unphysical divergence. Exact cancellation of infrared-divergent terms is demonstrated in the HFB shift of the single-particle excitation energy away from the Bogoliubov value at long wavelengths, with the residual terms raising it towards the plasma frequency at low temperature. Numerical illustrations are presented for a number of properties of the boson plasma as functions of temperature and density in the weak-coupling regime: these are the chemical potential, the condensate fraction, the normal and anomalous momentum distribution functions and the corresponding one-body density matrices, and the dispersion relation of single-particle excitations.

Superfluidity versus Bose-Einstein condensation in a Bose gas with disorder

G. E. Astrakharchik, Jordi Boronat, J. Casulleras +1 more

We investigate the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity in a Bose gas at zero temperature with disorder. By using the diffusion Monte Carlo method, we calculate the superfluid and the condensate fraction of the system as a function of density and strength of disorder. In the regime of weak disorder we find agreement with the analytical results obtained within the Bogoliubov model. For strong disorder the system enters an unusual regime where the superfluid fraction is smaller than the condensate fraction.

Finite-temperature superfluid depletion of disordered Bose gases

Cord Axel Müller

Abstract At zero temperature, homogeneous interacting Bose-condensed fluids are entirely superfluid, with remarkable transport properties. A non-superfluid, normal component is induced by finite temperatures and spatial inhomogeneity, the combined effects of which are rather intriguing, and difficult to describe quantitatively. By inhomogeneous Bogoliubov theory, applicable to weakly interacting condensed Bose gases in static external potentials with arbitrary spatial correlations, we calculate the normal fluid density via the transverse current–current correlation. We obtain finite-temperature disorder corrections to the normal fraction known since Laudau’s seminal two-fluid theory, using diagrammatic perturbation theory for systems of any dimensionality, with closed analytical expressions to leading, quadratic order in disorder strength.

Weakly interacting Bose gas in the vicinity of the normal-fluid–superfluid transition

Nikolay V. Prokof'ev, Oliver Ruebenacker, Boris V. Svistunov

We consider a three-dimensional weakly interacting Bose gas in the fluctuation region (and its vicinity) of the normal-fluid--superfluid phase transition point. We establish relations between basic thermodynamic functions: density $n(T,\ensuremath{\mu})$, superfluid density ${n}_{s}(T,\ensuremath{\mu})$, and condensate density ${n}_{\text{cnd}}(T,\ensuremath{\mu})$. Being universal for all weakly interacting ${\ensuremath{\mid}\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\mid}}^{4}$ systems, these relations are obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the classical ${\ensuremath{\mid}\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\mid}}^{4}$ model on a lattice. Comparing with the mean-field results yields a quantitative estimate of the fluctuation region size. Away from the fluctuation region, on the superfluid side, all the data perfectly agree with the predictions of the quasicondensate mean-field theory. This demonstrates that the only effect of the leading above-the-mean-field corrections in the condensate-based treatments is to replace the condensate density with the quasicondensate one in all local thermodynamic relations. Surprisingly, we find that a significant fraction of the density profile of a loosely trapped atomic gas might correspond to the fluctuation region.

Trapped Bose-Bose mixtures at finite temperature: A quantum Monte Carlo approach

Krešimir Dželalija, Viktor Cikojević, Jordi Boronat +1 more

We study thermal properties of a trapped Bose-Bose mixture in a dilute regime using quantum Monte Carlo methods. Our main aim is to investigate the dependence of the superfluid density and the condensate fraction on temperature for the mixed and separated phases. To this end we use the diffusion Monte Carlo method in the zero-temperature limit and the path-integral Monte Carlo method for finite temperatures. The results obtained are compared with solutions of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations for the mixture at zero temperature. We notice the existence of an anisotropic superfluid density in some phase-separated mixtures. Our results also show that the temperature evolution of the superfluid density and condensate fraction is slightly different, showing noteworthy situations where the superfluid fraction is smaller than the condensate fraction.
