Abstract

Using a real-time renormalization-group method we determine the complete dynamics of the spin-boson model with Ohmic dissipation for coupling strengths $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.1--0.2.$ We calculate the relaxation and dephasing time, static susceptibility, and correlation functions. Our results are consistent with quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the Shiba relation. We present reliable results for finite cutoff and finite bias in a regime where perturbation theory in $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ or in tunneling breaks down. Furthermore, an unambiguous comparison to results from the Kondo model is achieved.

Spin precession and real-time dynamics in the Kondo model: Time-dependent numerical renormalization-group study

Frithjof B. Anders, Avraham Schiller

A detailed derivation of the recently proposed time-dependent numerical renormalization-group (TD-NRG) approach to nonequilibrium dynamics in quantum-impurity systems is presented. We demonstrate that the method is suitable for fermionic as well as bosonic baths. Comparisons with exact analytical results for the charge relaxation in the resonant-level model and for dephasing in the spin-boson model establish the accuracy of the method. The real-time dynamics of a single spin coupled to each type of bath is investigated. We use the TD-NRG to calculate the spin relaxation and spin precession of a single Kondo impurity. The short- and long-time dynamics are studied as a function of temperature in the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic regimes. The short-time dynamics agrees very well with analytical results obtained at second order in the exchange coupling $J$. In the ferromagnetic regime, the transient spin decay is described by the scaling variable $x=2{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}\ensuremath{\mid}J(T)\ensuremath{\mid}Tt$. In the antiferromagnetic regime, the long-time decay is governed for $T<{T}_{K}$ by the Kondo time scale $1∕{T}_{K}$. Here ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}$ is the conduction-electron density of states, ${T}_{K}$ is the Kondo temperature, and $J(T)$ is the effective exchange coupling at temperature $T$. Results for spin precession are obtained by rotating the external magnetic field from the $x$ axis to the $z$ axis.

Equilibrium dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model under bias

Da-Chuan Zheng, Ning-Hua Tong

Using the bosonic numerical renormalization group method, we studied the equilibrium dynamical correlation function C ( ω ) of the spin operator σ z for the biased sub-Ohmic spin-boson model. The small- ω behavior is found to be universal and independent of the bias ε and the coupling strength α (except at the quantum critical point and ε = 0). Our NRG data also show for a wide range of parameters, including the biased strong coupling regime ( and ), supporting the general validity of the Shiba relation. Close to the quantum critical point , the dependence of C ( ω ) on α and ε is understood in terms of the competition between ε and the crossover energy scale of the unbiased case. C ( ω ) is stable with respect to ε for . For , it is suppressed by ε in the low frequency regime. We establish that holds for all sub-Ohmic regime , with for and for . The variation of C ( ω ) with α and ε is summarized into a crossover phase diagram on the α – ε plane.

Relaxation versus Decoherence: Spin and Current Dynamics in the Anisotropic Kondo Model at Finite Bias and Magnetic Field

Mikhail Pletyukhov, Dirk Schuricht, Herbert Schoeller

Using a nonequilibrium renormalization group method we study the real-time evolution of spin and current in the anisotropic Kondo model (both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic) at a finite magnetic field h(0) and bias voltage V. We derive analytic expressions for all times in the weak-coupling regime max{V, h(0),1/t} >> T(c) (T(c) is the strong-coupling scale). We find that all observables decay both with the spin relaxation and decoherence rates Gamma(1/2). Various V-dependent logarithmic, oscillatory, and power-law contributions are predicted. The low-energy cutoff of logarithmic terms is generically identified by the difference of transport decay rates. For small times t << max{V, h(0)}(-1), we obtain universal dynamics for spin and current.

Dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model: A comparison of three numerical approaches

Yao Yao, Liwei Duan, Zhiguo Lü +2 more

Dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model is examined using three numerical approaches, namely the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variation with the Davydov D(1) ansatz, the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method within the representation of orthogonal polynomials, and a perturbative approach based on a unitary transformation. In order to probe the validity regimes of the three approaches, we study the dynamics of a qubit coupled to a bosonic bath with and without a local field. Comparison of the up-state population evolution shows that the three approaches are in agreement in the weak-coupling regime but exhibit marked differences when the coupling strength is large. The Davydov D(1) ansatz and the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group can both be reliably employed in the weak-coupling regime, while the former is also valid in the strong-coupling regime as judged by how faithfully the trial state follows the Schrödinger equation. We further explore the bipartite entanglement dynamics between two qubits coupled with individual bosonic baths which reveals entanglement sudden death and revival.

Dynamical renormalization-group approach to the spin-boson model

Hassan Shapourian

We develop a semianalytical approach beyond the Born-Markov approximation to study the quench dynamics of the spin-boson model in the strong-coupling regime ($\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\le}1/2$) for the Ohmic bath. The basic idea in our approach is to write an effective time-dependent model for the dynamics of the system coupled to the bosonic bath after integrating out high-frequency bath modes. By applying this procedure to the Heisenberg equations of motion, we derive a set of flow equations for the system parameters as a function of time. The final flow equations look similar to those of the equilibrium renormalization-group theory; however, in our derivation the scaling parameter is set by the real time. We solve the equations of motion with time-dependent renormalized parameters and show that the resulting dynamics is in decent agreement with the exact NRG calculations as well as the noninteracting blip approximation that is a well-known good solution in this limit.

Real-time renormalization group in frequency space: A two-loop analysis of the nonequilibrium anisotropic Kondo model at finite magnetic field

Herbert Schoeller, Frank Reininghaus

We apply a recently developed nonequilibrium real-time renormalization group (RG) method in frequency space to describe nonlinear quantum transport through a small fermionic quantum system coupled weakly to several reservoirs via spin and/or orbital fluctuations. Within a weak-coupling two-loop analysis, we derive analytic formulas for the nonlinear conductance and the kernel determining the time evolution of the reduced density matrix. A consistent formalism is presented how the RG flow is cut off by relaxation and dephasing rates. We apply the general formalism to the nonequilibrium anisotropic Kondo model at finite magnetic field. We consider the weak-coupling regime, where the maximum of voltage and bare magnetic field is larger than the Kondo temperature. In this regime, we calculate the nonlinear conductance, the magnetic susceptibility, the renormalized spin relaxation and dephasing rates, and the renormalized $g$ factor. All quantities are considered up to the first logarithmic correction beyond leading order at resonance. Up to a redefinition of the Kondo temperature, we confirm previous results for the conductance and the magnetic susceptibility in the isotropic case. In addition, we present a consistent calculation of the resonant line shapes, including the determination whether the spin relaxation or dephasing rate cuts off the logarithmic divergence. Furthermore, we calculate quantities characterizing the exponential decay of the time evolution of the magnetization. In contrast to the conductance, we find that the derivative of the spin relaxation (dephasing) rate with respect to the magnetic field is logarithmically enhanced (suppressed) for voltages smaller (larger) than the renormalized magnetic field, and that the logarithmic divergence is cut off by the opposite rate. The renormalized $g$ factor is predicted to show a symmetric logarithmic suppression at resonance, which is cut off by the spin relaxation rate. We propose a three-terminal setup to measure the suppression at resonance. For all quantities, we analyze also the anisotropic case and find additional nonequilibrium effects at resonance.
