Phonons and solitons in one-dimensional Mott insulators

Abstract

We study the problem of one-dimensional Luttinger liquids in the insulating Mott-Hubbard phase in the presence of acoustic phonons in the semiclassical limit. We show that solitonic excitations can propagate freely in the system and the energy required to produce a soliton is reduced by a polaronic effect. We find a critical value of the electron-phonon coupling constant for which this energy vanishes.

Nonlinear excitations in one-dimensional correlated insulators

Chun-Min Chang, A. H. Castro Neto, A. R. Bishop

In this work we investigate charge transport in one-dimensional insulators via semiclassical and perturbative renormalization group methods. We consider the problem of electron-electron, electron-phonon and electron-two-level system interactions. We show that nonlinear collective modes such as polarons and solitons are responsible for transport. We find a new excitation in the Mott insulator: the polaronic soliton. We discuss fhe differences between band and Mott insulators in terms of their spin spectrum and obtain the charge and spin gaps in each one of these systems. We show that electron-electron interactions provide strong renormalizations of the energy scales in the problem.

In this work we investigate charge transport in one-dimensional (1D) insulators via semi-classical and perturbative renormalization group (RG) methods. We consider the problem of electron-electron, electron-phonon and electron-two-level system interactions. We show that non-linear collective modes such as polarons and solitons are reponsible for transport. We find a new excitation in the Mott insulator: the polaronic soliton. We discuss the differences between band and Mott insulators in terms of their spin spectrum and obtain the charge and spin gaps in each one of these systems. Optical phonons in a quarter-filled one-dimensional Hubbard model

Philippe Maurel, Marie-Bernadette Lepetit

The influence of dispersionless quantum optical phonons on the phase diagram of a quarter-filled Hubbard chain is studied using the density-matrix renormalization group technique. The ground state phase diagram is obtained for frequencies corresponding to the intramolecular vibrations in organic conductors. For high vibrational modes the system is only slightly affected by the electron-phonons coupling. It remains in a L\"uttinger liquid phase as long as the electronic repulsion is larger than the polaronic binding energy. For low vibrational modes the phase diagram is very rich. A noticeable point is the existence of a ${4k}_{F}$ charge-density wave phase for small values of the correlation strength. For realistic values of the electron repulsion and of the electron-phonons coupling constant a large phonons-mediated reduction of the L\"uttinger liquid parameter ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ was found compared to the pure electronic model.

Mobility and diffusion of a particle coupled to a Luttinger liquid

A. H. Castro Neto, A. O. Caldeira

We study the mobility of a particle coupled to a one-dimensional interacting fermionic system, namely, a Luttinger liquid. We bosonize the Luttinger liquid and find the effective interaction between the particle and the bosonic system. We show that the dynamics of this system is completely equivalent to the acoustic polaron problem where the interaction has purely electronic origin. This problem has a zero-mode excitation, or soliton, in the strong-coupling limit, which corresponds to the the formation of a polarization cloud due to the fermion-fermion interaction around the particle. We find that, due to the scattering of the residual bosonic modes, the soliton has a finite mobility and diffusion coefficient at finite temperatures that depend on the fermion-fermion interaction. We show that at low temperatures the mobility and the diffusion coefficient are proportional to ${\mathit{T}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}$ and ${\mathit{T}}^{5}$, respectively, and at high temperatures the mobility vanishes as ${\mathit{T}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ while the diffusion increases as T.

One dimensional acoustic phonon linearly coupled to electron density

Sanjeev Kumar, Gautam Kumar Sinha

We have studied one dimensional acoustic phonon linearly coupled to the electron density. The phonon spectrum is linear with cutoff at the Debye frequency, it is straightforward modification of three dimensional optical phonons. Phonon field results in substituting the dynamical coupling for the screened coulomb interaction. We have shown that the electron-phonon coupling quantitatively changed the phase diagram of Luttinger liquid with a single impurity. The existence of slow and fast polaron modes with different weights in different regimes resulted in different renormalization group flow for a weak scatterer and a weak tunneling link. The resulting phase diagram depending on the parameters of the problem, regimes corresponding to purely metallic or purely insulating behavior and an intermediate regime with two stable fixed points and one unstable, finite conductance fixed point. we have found that the direction of renormalization group flow change upon varying either the relative strength of the electron-electron and electron-phonon coupling or the ratio of Fermi to sound velocities. The obtained results were found in good agreement with previously obtained results.

Polarons in One Dimension: Fröhlich–Toyozawa–Luttinger Model

Ashok Chatterjee, Soma Mukhopadhyay

This chapter presents the energy spectrum and the momentum distribution of the Frohlich–Toyozawa–Luttinger liquid. The one-dimensional many-electron problem has generated renewed interest after the discovery of quasi-one dimensional solids such as carbon nanotubes, quantum wires, and other one-dimensional systems. Tomonaga was the first to solve the one-dimensional interacting fermion problem exactly using bosonization and certain approximations regarding the commutator of the density operators. Marino considered a one-dimensional acoustic many-polaron Hamiltonian within the framework of the Luttinger model and showed that for a certain range of the coupling constants the system would exhibit a metallic behavior because the spectrum contains gapless collective excitations of polaronic plasmons. Rao et al. have exactly solved the one-dimensional interacting electron problem within the framework of Luttinger model incorporating both the electron-optical-phonon interaction and the electron-acoustic-phonon interaction along with the electron-electron interaction to obtain the energy spectrum.
