Role of Interchain Hopping in Two Disordered Chains of Spinless Fermions

Abstract

The effect of interchain hopping and interaction on Anderson localization has been investigated for two coupled chains of spinless fermions with nearest neighbor interaction. Using the renormalization group method, we find that interchain hopping plays a significant role when the correlation gap induced by the interplay of interchain hopping and intrachain interaction becomes larger than the Anderson localization energy scale induced by impurities. The strong competition between localization and delocalization is examined for attractive interaction.

Effects of weak disorder on two coupled Hubbard chains

E. Orignac, Thierry Giamarchi

We consider the effect of weak nonmagnetic disorder on two chains of interacting fermions (with and without spins) coupled by interchain hopping. For the spinless case, interchain hopping increases localization for repulsive interactions but stabilizes the $s$-wave superconducting phase for attractive interactions. For the case with spin, the $d$-wave phase arising from purely repulsive interactions in the clean system is destroyed by an infinitesimal disorder, while for attractive interactions, the $s$-wave superconductivity is more resistant to disorder than in the one-chain case. In each case we compute the localization length and the conductivity.

Roles of Interchain Hopping in Two Coupled Chains of Tomonaga Model

Hideo Yoshioka, Yoshikazu Suzumura

Two chains of interacting spinless fermions in the presence of interchain hopping are investigated by use of phase Hamiltonian based on bosonization method. Excitation spectrum and phase diagram at absolute zero temperature are obtained by means of renormalization group method. Momentum distribution functions are also calculated. It is shown that the interchain hopping gives rise to drastic effects on properties of ground state compared to interchain interaction and is crucial to appearance of ordered states in higher dimensions.

Spinless fermion chains with weak interchain hopping

J. Szṅajd, K. W. Becker

The linear renormalization-group transformation is used to study the thermodynamics of weakly coupled spinless fermion chains at half-filling. The model consists of a competing nearest-neighbour Coulomb repulsion and kinetic energy terms. The specific heat and the nearest-neighbour correlation function are studied as functions of temperature by varying the ratio of Coulomb repulsion to kinetic energy. The role of an interchain hopping is studied and the metal–insulator phase transition temperature as a function of hopping parameters is discussed.

Two Coupled Chains of Tomonaga Model

Hideo Yoshioka, Yoshikazu Suzumura

Two chains of spinless Tomonaga model coupled by a transverse hopping are investigated in terms of phase Hamiltonian where separation of Fermi momentum in the presence of the hopping is taken into account explicitly. It is shown that there appears a gap in one of the two excitations by using a renormalization group method. As a result, correlation of charge density wave with interchain ordering and out of phase between the chains (superconductivity with intrachain ordering and in phase between the chains) becomes the most dominant one in the case of the repulsive (attractive) intrachain interaction.

Interchain coupling induced localization/delocalization in coupled one-dimensional ordered and disordered chains

Wei Zhang, Rong Yang, Zhao Yi +3 more

A different type of system with coupled ordered-disordered chains has given rise to considerable interest recently, as it has a variety of applications in nanostructures and biological systems such as DNA molecules. We investigate the localization/delocalization of coupled one-dimensional systems composed of one disordered chain (chain I) and another ordered chain (chain II), focusing on the interplay among the disorder, correlation, and interchain coupling. We find that for systems where chain I exhibits uncorrelated disorder, charge transport in chain I (II) is enhanced (suppressed), as the disorder in chain I leads to the localization of all states in both chains. However, for chain I with hopping amplitude ${t}_{1}$ and long-range correlated disorder (with power-law spectral density and disorder strength $W$), we find there is a localization/delocalization transition for the case $W\ensuremath{\le}4{t}_{1}$, induced by interchain coupling. For $W>4{t}_{1}$, we find there is a quantum-phase transition at finite interchain coupling ${V}_{c}$: The interchain coupling induces appearance of two channels of extended states for $V>{V}_{c}$ while there is only one channel of extended states for $V<{V}_{c}$.
