Two-Dimensional Anisotropic Non-Fermi-Liquid Phase of Coupled Luttinger Liquids

Abstract

Using bosonization techniques, we show that strong forward scattering interactions between one-dimensional spinless Luttinger liquids (LL) can stabilize a phase where charge-density wave, superconducting, and transverse single particle hopping perturbations are irrelevant. This new phase retains its LL-like properties in the directions of the chains, but with relations between exponents modified by the transverse interactions, whereas it is a perfect insulator in the transverse direction. The mechanism that stabilizes this phase is strong transverse charge-density wave fluctuations at incommensurate wave vector, which frustrates crystal formation by preventing lock-in of the in-chain density waves.

Role of transverse hopping in a two-coupled-chains model

Michele Fabrizio

We study the effect of a transverse hopping ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ in two chains of both spinless and spinning repulsively interacting fermions, by means of renormalization group and bosonization techniques. We show that, independent of the presence of spin, ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ strongly modifies the asymptotic long-wavelength behavior of the two chains, opening gaps in the excitation spectra. The origin of the instability of the gapless Luttinger-liquid behavior is identified in the flavor (==chain index) anisotropy induced by ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$. In the case of spinning fermions, it leads to dominant pair fluctuations, in spite of the repulsive interaction. The role of spin is further analyzed in a model of two coupled chains showing, in the absence of ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$, spin-charge separation without anomalous exponents. We solve this model exactly by the bosonization technique, and we find that the interesting analytical properties induced by spin-charge separation persist in the presence of transverse hopping, although ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ does modify the shape of the Fermi surface. The asymptotic expression of the single-particle Green function is also obtained.

Phases of two coupled Luttinger liquids

Heinz J. Schulz

A model of two interacting one-dimensional fermion systems (``Luttinger liquids'') coupled by single-particle hopping is investigated. Bosonization allows a number of exact statements to be made. In particular, for forward scattering only, the model contains two massless boson sectors and an Ising-type critical sector. For general repulsive interactions, there is a spin excitation gap and either d-type pairing or orbital antiferromagnetic fluctuations dominate. It is argued that the same behavior is also found for strong interactions. A possible scenario for the crossover to a Fermi liquid in a many-chain system is discussed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Instability of the sliding Luttinger liquid

V Fleurov, V. Kagalovsky, I V Lerner +1 more

We revise a phase diagram for the sliding Luttinger liquid (SLL) of coupled one-dimensional quantum wires packed in two- or three-dimensional arrays in the absence of a magnetic field. We analyse whether physically justifiable (reasonable) inter-wire interactions, i.e. either the screened Coulomb or 'Coulomb-blockade' type interactions, stabilise the SLL phase. Calculating the scaling dimensions of the most relevant perturbations (the inter-wire single-particle hybridisation, charge-density wave, and superconducting inter-wire couplings), we find that their combination always destroys the SLL phase for the repulsive intra-wire interaction. However, suppressing the inter-wire tunnelling of repulsive fermions (when the charge-density wave is the only remaining perturbation), one can observe a stability region emerging due to the inter-wire forward scattering interaction.

Delocalization in coupled Luttinger liquids with impurities

Stefan Scheidl, Simon Bogner, Thorsten Emig A

We study effects of quenched disorder on coupled two-dimensional arrays of Luttinger liquids (LL's) as a model for stripes in high-${T}_{c}$ compounds. In the framework of a renormalization-group analysis, we find that weak inter-LL charge-density-wave couplings are always irrelevant as opposed to the pure system. By varying either disorder strength, intra- or inter-LL interactions, the system can undergo a delocalization transition between an insulator and a strongly anisotropic metallic state with LL-like transport. This state is characterized by short-ranged charge-density-wave order, the superconducting order is quasi-long-ranged along the stripes and short ranged in the transversal direction.

Sliding Luttinger liquid with alternating interwire couplings

S Begum, V Fleurov, V. Kagalovsky +1 more

We study a phase diagram for the sliding Luttinger liquid (SLL) of coupled one-dimensional quantum wires packed in a two-dimensional array in the absence of a magnetic field. We analyse whether the nearest-neighbour inter-wire interactions, stabilise the SLL phase. We construct an analogue of a Su-Schriefer-Heeger (SSH) model (allowing alternating couplings between wires). Calculating the scaling dimensions of the two most relevant perturbations, charge-density wave, and superconducting inter-wire couplings, but excluding the inter-wire single-particle hybridisation, we find a finite stability region for the SLL. It emerges due to the inter-wire forward scattering interaction, and remains stable up to a significant asymmetry between alternating couplings.
