Abstract

We present here a nonlinear sigma-model (NLσM) study of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external commensurate staggered magnetic field. We find, already at the mean-field level, excellent agreement with recent and very accurate Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) studies, and that up to the highest values of the field for which a comparison is possible, for the staggered magnetization and the transverse spin gap. Qualitative but not quantitative agreement is found between the NLσM predictions for the longitudinal spin gap and the DMRG results. The origin of the discrepancies is traced and discussed. Our results allow for extensions to higher-spin chains that have not yet been studied numerically, and the predictions for a spin-2 chain are presented and discussed. Comparison is also made with previous theoretical approaches.

Spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains in an external staggered field

Elisa Ercolessi, G. Morandi, P. Pieri +1 more

We present in this paper a nonlinear \ensuremath{\sigma}-model analysis of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external commensurate staggered magnetic field. After rediscussing briefly and extending previous results for the staggered magnetization curve, the core of the paper is a calculation at the tree level, of the Green functions of the model. We obtain precise results for the elementary excitation spectrum and in particular for the spin gaps in the transverse and longitudinal channels. It is shown that, while the spectral weight in the transverse channel is exhausted by a single magnon pole, in the longitudinal one, besides a magnon pole a two-magnon continuum appears as well whose weight is a steadily increasing function of the applied field, while the weight of the magnon decreases correspondingly. The balance between the two is governed by a sum rule that is derived and discussed. A detailed comparison with the present experimental and numerical state of the art as well as with previous analytical approaches is also made.

Heisenberg spin-1 chain in a staggered magnetic field: A density-matrix-renormalization-group study

Jizhong Lou, Xi Dai, Shaojin Qin +2 more

Using the density-matrix-renormalization-group technique, we calculate numerically the low-energy excitation spectrum and magnetization curve of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain in a staggered magnetic field, which is expected to describe the physics of the ${R}_{2}{\mathrm{BaNiO}}_{5} (R\ensuremath{\ne}Y)$ family below the N\'eel temperature of the magnetic rare-earth (R) sublattice. These results are valid in the entire range of the staggered field, and agree with those given by the nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ model study for small fields, but differ from the latter for large fields. They are consistent with the available experimental data. The correlation functions for this model are also calculated. The transverse correlations display the anticipated exponential decay with shorter correlation length, while the longitudinal correlations show explicitly the induced staggered magnetization.

Field-induced gap in the spin- 12 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain: A density-matrix renormalization-group study

Jizhong Lou, Shaojin Qin, Changfeng Chen +2 more

We study the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in both uniform and (perpendicular) staggered magnetic fields using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. This model has been shown earlier to describe the physics of the copper benzoate materials in magnetic field. In the present work, we extend the study to more general case for a systematic investigation of the field-induced gap and related properties of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In particular, we explore the high magnetic field regime where interesting behaviors in the field-induced gap, magnetization, and spin correlation functions are found. Careful examination of the low energy properties and magnetization reveals interesting competing effects of the staggered and uniform fields. The incommensurate behavior in the spin correlation functions is demonstrated and discussed in detail. The present work reproduces earlier results in good agreement with experimental data on copper benzoate and predicts new interesting field-induced features at very high magnetic field.

HEISENBERG INTEGER SPIN CHAINS IN A UNIFORM MAGNETIC FIELD

Lorenzo Campos Venuti, Elisa Ercolessi, G. Morandi +2 more

We investigate both numerically and analytically the behavior of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic isotropic Heisenberg chain in an external uniform magnetic field. Extensive DMRG studies of chains up to N = 80 sites extend previous analyses and obtain the zero-temperature correlation functions. We argue that, despite the presence of a magnetic field, the model is still well described by an O(3) nonlinear σ-model. A saddle-point analysis, that also includes Gaussian fluctuations, is developed for the latter both at zero and finite temperatures. Its predictions are compared with those of the numerical analysis and with the existing experimental literature.

Nonlinear sigma models and quantum spin systems

Antonio S. Gliozzi, Alberto Parola

Microscopic models of quantum antiferromagnets are investigated on the basis of a mapping onto effective low-energy Hamiltonians. Lattice effects are carefully taken into account and their role is discussed. We show that the presence of an external staggered magnetic field modifies in a nontrivial way the usual mapping onto the nonlinear sigma model, leading to the appearance of terms neglected in previous works. Our analysis is compared with Lanczos diagonalizations of $S=1$ Heisenberg chains in a staggered field, confirming the validity of the single-mode approximation for the evaluation of the dynamical structure factor. The results are relevant for the interpretation of experiments in quasi-one-dimensional compounds. Microscopic realizations of SU(4) spin chains are also discussed in the framework of spin-orbital lattice systems. The low-energy physics is shown to be described by sigma models with topological angle $\ensuremath{\theta}$ in one dimension. This mapping strongly suggests that the one-dimensional ${\mathrm{CP}}^{3}$ model (with $\ensuremath{\theta}=\ensuremath{\pi})$ undergoes a second-order phase transition as a function of the coupling.

S(k) for Haldane-gap antiferromagnets: Large-scale numerical results versus field theory and experiment

Erik Schwartz Sørensen, Ian K. Affleck

The structure function S(k) for the s=1, Haldane-gap antiferromagnetic chain is measured accurately using the recent density-matrix renormalization-group method, with a chain length of 100. Excellent agreement with the nonlinear-\ensuremath{\sigma}-model prediction is obtained, both at k\ensuremath{\approxeq}\ensuremath{\pi}, where a single-magnon process dominates, and at k\ensuremath{\approxeq}0, where a two-magnon process dominates. We repeat our calculation with crystal-field anisotropy chosen to model Ni(${\mathrm{C}}_{2}$${\mathrm{H}}_{8}$${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$${)}_{2}$${\mathrm{NO}}_{2}$(${\mathrm{ClO}}_{4}$), obtaining good agreement with both field-theory predictions and recent experiments. Correlation lengths, gaps, and velocities are determined for both polarizations.
