Abstract

A special limit of an antiferromagnetic $\mathrm{XYZ}$ chain was recently shown to exhibit interesting bulk as well as surface spin-flop transitions at $T=0.$ Here we provide a complete calculation of the thermodynamics of the bulk transition using a transfer-matrix renormalization-group method that addresses directly the thermodynamic limit of quantum spin chains. We also shed some light on certain spin-wave anomalies at low temperature predicted earlier by Johnson and Bonner.

Bulk and surface spin-flop transitions in an antiferromagnetic XYZ chain

J. Karadamoglou, N. Papanicolaou

Spin-flop transitions are studied within a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic XYZ chain immersed in a uniform bias magnetic field. For a special choice of anisotropy the bulk spin-flop transition occurs at a critical field ${H}_{b}$ characterized by the onset of ``accidental'' degeneracy in the energy spectrum that may indicate a hidden symmetry. On an open chain the bulk transition is preceded by a surface spin-flop transition induced by a surface magnon that turns soft at a new critical field ${H}_{s}<{H}_{b},$ while an antiferromagnetic domain wall is realized in the ground state as the bias field approaches ${H}_{b}.$ These $T=0$ phase transitions could be observed through electron-spin resonance on magnetic chains doped with nonmagnetic ions.

The longitudinal susceptibility of an XY spin-chain

Ibha Chatterjee

A previously unsolved problem has been solved numerically using transfer matrix renormalization group analysis, based on a density matrix renormalization group idea. This calculation leads to a high-precision prediction of the value of susceptibility in the x - or y - directions of an XY spin-chain, because in the calculation the transfer matrix idea is incorporated and a thermodynamic limit is ensured. From this calculation the susceptibility at zero temperature is predicted for a spin-½ antiferromagnetic XY model in one dimension.

Thermodynamics of quantum Heisenberg spin chains

Tao Xiang

Thermodynamic properties of the quantum Heisenberg spin chains with $S=1/2,$ 1, and $3/2$ are investigated using the transfer-matrix renormalization-group method. The temperature dependence of the magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat, spin-spin correlation length, and several other physical quantities in a zero or finite applied field are calculated and compared. Our data agree well with the Bethe ansatz, exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo results and provide further insight into the quantum effects in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains.

Thermodynamics of Frustrated Quantum Spin Chains

K. Maisinger, Ulrich Schollwöck

We apply the transfer-matrix density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) approach to frustrated quantum spin chains, down to $T\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.025\mathrm{K}$ in the thermodynamic limit. The incommensurability problem of exact diagonalization and the negative sign problem of quantum Monte Carlo vanish completely. For illustration, we give results for chains with next-nearest-neighbor frustration and for the delta chain, which has been a testbed for many thermodynamic methods. The DMRG approach proves to be an extremely powerful method for the old problem of the thermodynamics of frustrated systems.

Antiferromagnetic zigzag spin chain in magnetic fields at finite temperatures

Nobuya Maeshima, Kouichi Okunishi

We study thermodynamic behaviors of the antiferromagnetic zigzag spin chain in magnetic fields, using the density-matrix renormalization-group method for the quantum transfer matrix. We focus on the thermodynamics of the system near the critical fields in the ground-state magnetization process $(M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve): the saturation field, the lower critical field associated with excitation gap, and the field at the middle-field cusp singularity. We calculate magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat of the zigzag chain in magnetic fields at finite temperatures, and then discuss how the calculated quantities reflect the low-lying excitations of the system related with the critical behaviors in the $M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve.

Zigzag spin chains with antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic interactions

Hantao Lu, Y. J. Wang, Shaojin Qin +1 more

Properties of the zigzag spin chains with various nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions are studied by making use of the transfer-matrix renormalization group method. Thermodynamic quantities of the systems (temperature dependence of the susceptibility and the specific heat), as well as the field dependence of the magnetization are analyzed numerically with a high accuracy in the thermodynamic limit. The results have been compared with the recent experimental data on Rb$_2$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$.
