Uniform approximation for diffractive contributions to the trace formula in billiard systems

Abstract

We derive contributions to the trace formula for the spectral density accounting for the role of diffractive orbits in two-dimensional billiard systems with corners. This is achieved by using the exact Sommerfeld solution for the Green function of a wedge. We obtain a uniformly valid formula for single-diffractive orbits which interpolates between formerly separate approaches (the geometrical theory of diffraction and Gutzwiller's trace formula). It yields excellent numerical agreement with exact quantum results, also in cases where other methods fail.

Diffractive Orbits in Quantum Billiards

Nicolas Pavloff, C. Schmit

We study diffractive effects in two-dimensional polygonal billiards. We derive an analytical trace formula accounting for the role of the nonclassical diffractive orbits in the quantum spectrum. As an illustration, the method is applied to a triangular billiard.

Diffractive effect of quantum spectra in the annular billiard

Zhang Ji-Quan, Yanhui Zhang, Zhou Hui +3 more

We analyze the quantum spectra of the two-dimensional annular billiard system based on the open-orbit quantum spectrum function, and respectively calculate the Fourier-transformed quantum spectra for various values of a parameter (in the case f=Rin/Rout). The results show that the peak positions of quantum spectrum match with the lengths of classical orbits of particle motion very well ,and the semiclassical closed-orbit theory affords a good explanation. While the inner circle radius becomes comparaber with the de Brogile wavelength of the particle, the character of quantum spectrum changes essentially, turning out to be similar with the pattern of optical diffraction, which is a purely wavelike phenomenon and accords with Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction theorem. Our treatment provides a basis theory for researching the property of billiard system and microjunction transport, and opens a new way to investigate the diffraction of crystal and spectral analysis.

Amplitude ordering of the trace formula for the two-particle disk billiard

Jamal Sakhr

For the periodic orbit quantization of a system of particles confined in a two-dimensional disk billiard, the proliferation of multiparticle periodic orbits with length precludes standard length truncation of the trace formula and alternative truncation schemes are necessary. An amplitude ordering of the single-particle periodic orbits reveals a quantum-classical correspondence for the angular momentum of a particle in the disk which is useful for the quantization of all the low energy states of the multiparticle problem. We explicitly show that a simple amplitude truncation of the trace formula better approximates the semiclassical density of states and in particular resolves closely spaced levels that are otherwise unresolved using the standard approach.

Periodic Orbit Quantization beyond the Semiclassical Theory

Gábor Vattay, Per E. Rosenqvist

A quantum generalization of the semiclassical theory of Gutzwiller is given. The new formulation leads to systematic orbit-by-orbit inclusion of higher $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}$ contributions to the spectral determinant. We apply the theory to billiard systems, and compare the periodic orbit quantization including the first $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}$ contribution to the exact quantum mechanical results.

Characterizing classical periodic orbits from quantum Green's functions in two-dimensional integrable systems: Harmonic oscillators and quantum billiards

Y. F. Chen, J. C. Tung, P. H. Tuan +3 more

A general method is developed to characterize the family of classical periodic orbits from the quantum Green's function for the two-dimensional (2D) integrable systems. A decomposing formula related to the beta function is derived to link the quantum Green's function with the individual classical periodic orbits. The practicality of the developed formula is demonstrated by numerically analyzing the 2D commensurate harmonic oscillators and integrable quantum billiards. Numerical analyses reveal that the emergence of the classical features in quantum Green's functions principally comes from the superposition of the degenerate states for 2D harmonic oscillators. On the other hand, the damping factor in quantum Green's functions plays a critical role to display the classical features in mesoscopic regime for integrable quantum billiards, where the physical function of the damping factor is to lead to the coherent superposition of the nearly degenerate eigenstates.

Periodic orbit quantization of the Sinai billiard in the small scatterer limit

Per Dahlqvist, Gábor Vattay

We consider the semiclassical quantization of the Sinai billiard for disk radii R small compared with the wavelength . Via the application of the periodic orbit theory of diffraction we derive the semiclassical spectral determinant. The limitations of the derived determinant are studied by comparing it to the exact Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) determinant, which we generalize here for the subspace. With the help of the Ewald resummation method developed for the full KKR determinant we transfer the complex diffractive determinant to a real form. The real zeros of the determinant are the quantum eigenvalues in semiclassical approximation. The essential parameter is the strength of the scatterer . Surprisingly, this can take any value between and within the range of validity of the diffractive approximation , causing strong perturbation despite the smallness of the disk. We study the statistics exhibited by spectra for fixed values of c . It is Poissonian for , provided the disk is placed inside a rectangle with irrational squared side ratio. For c = 0 we find a good agreement of the level spacing distribution with Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE). The form factor and two-point correlation function are also similar to GOE, but with larger deviations. By varying the parameter c from 0 to the level statistics interpolates smoothly between these limiting cases. Any of these transitional level statistics can thus be found in the spectrum of a Sinai billiard with sufficiently small R while we go from the quantum to the semiclassical limit .
