Phase Space Picture and Canonical Transformations

S. Rajasekar, R. Velusamy

This chapter presents some of the features of the phase space picture. For quantum mechanical systems Eugene Paul Wigner introduced a quantum analogue of a phase space probability distribution called Wigner distribution function or phase space picture. Using the Wigner distribution function it is possible to perform a canonical transformation in quantum mechanics. The phase space picture is a useful candidate to illustrate the transition from classical to quantum mechanics. The Poisson brackets and canonical transformations are part of the effective formulation of classical mechanics. In the infinite height potential video sequences of the evolution of Wigner functions for a wave function of a wave packet and its mirror wave packet is constructed. The chapter also presents the application of the canonical transformations and phase space distribution function in the study of wave packet spread and coherent and squeezed states.

Time behavior of a Gaussian wave packet accompanying the generalized coherent state for the inverted oscillator

Mustapha Maamache, Yacine Bouguerra, Jeong Ryeol Choi

A Gaussian wave packet of the inverted oscillator is investigated using the invariant operator method together with the unitary transformation method. A simple wave packet directly derived from the eigenstates of the invariant operator of the system corresponds to a plane wave that is fully delocalized. However, we can construct a weighted wave packet in terms of such plane waves, which corresponds to a Gaussian wave. This wave packet is associated with the generalized coherent state, which can be crucially utilized for investigating the classical limit of quantum wave mechanics. Various quantum properties of the system, such as fluctuations of the canonical variables, the uncertainty product, and the motion of the wave packet or quantum particle, are analyzed by means of this wave packet. We have confirmed that the time behavior of such a wave packet is very similar to the counterpart classical state. The wave packet runs away from the origin in the positive or negative direction in the 1D coordinate depending on the condition of the initial state. We have confirmed that this wave packet not only moves acceleratively but also spreads out during its propagation.

New Inequalities and Uncertainty Relations on Linear Canonical Transform Revisit

Guanlei Xu, Xiaotong Wang, Xiaogang Xu

The uncertainty principle plays an important role in mathematics, physics, signal processing, and so on. Firstly, based on definition of the linear canonical transform (LCT) and the traditional Pitt's inequality, one novel Pitt's inequality in the LCT domains is obtained, which is connected with the LCT parameters and Then one novel logarithmic uncertainty principle is derived from this novel Pitt's inequality in the LCT domains, which is associated with parameters of the two LCTs. Secondly, from the relation between the original function and LCT, one entropic uncertainty principle and one Heisenberg's uncertainty principle in the LCT domains are derived, which are associated with the LCT parameters and The reason why the three lower bounds are only associated with LCT parameters and and independent of and is presented. The results show it is possible that the bounds tend to zeros.
