Abstract

We present an internally consistent theory of amplification near the minimum of autoionizing states with quantitative application to calcium. We have included a completely specified three-photon pumping and we find certain unusual aspects of the system. We find conditions under which the system remains in a steady state, although being coupled to the continuum. For incoherent pumping we obtain quantitative results for the gain. Our results and their extensions are also discussed in the context of present-day experimental possibifities.

Radiation amplification near an autoionizing state: A model in atomic Ca

Jian Zhang, P. Lambropoulos, Xian Tang

We present an internally consistent theory of amplification near the minimum of the absorption profile of autoionizing states, with a quantitative application to calcium. We have included a completely specified three-photon pumping, and have obtained quantitative results for the gain that reveal certain unusual aspects of this system. Our results and their extensions are also discussed in the context of present-day experimental possibilities.

Radiation amplification through autoionizing resonances without population inversion

A. Lyras, Xian Tang, P. Lambropoulos +1 more

We present a quantitative study of radiation amplification without population inversion based on models recently proposed by Harris [Phys. Rev. Lett. 62, 1033 (1989)]. We discuss both two-level and three-level arrangements in terms of the density matrix. Our calculations, which are fully time dependent, incorporate an incoherent pumping mechanism that is essential for amplification. We discuss in detail the range of and conditions on atomic parameters for which amplification is possible. Its feasibility is demonstrated through the direct calculation of the change of the intensity of a probe beam interacting with the atom.

On the inversionless amplification in the proximity of transitions from autoionization levels

А. А. Черненко

The results of theoretical investigations of the line shape for the absorption (amplification) of a weak optical signal in the proximity of the system of autoionization atomic levels are reported. The best conditions and regions of existence of the inversionless amplification in the proximity of transitions from these atomic levels are determined depending on the energy defect between them, the Fano parameters, and the generalized Rabi frequencies, as well as on the incoherent pumping power. The problem of dynamics of atomic level occupancy for the pulse excitation is solved. It is demonstrated that the effect of the inversionless amplification for the transient mode can considerably exceed its own steady-state value.

Light amplification without population inversion: Time-dependent study of (1+1)-photon emission from autoionizing states

S. Sanyal, Lipika Adhya, Krishna Rai Dastidar

In a time-dependent dressed-state calculation we have studied the time development of (1+1)-photon amplification without population inversion from an autoionizing (AI) state which is coupled to another AI state embedded into the same continuum. We have shown that the (1+1)-photon gain evolves with time over the single-photon gain and it can be controlled by changing the relative strength of the coupling of the resonant intermediate state with the ground state and with the two AI states. We have also shown that three-peaked gain on the upper probe field evolves with time and we have demonstrated that the modification of the second peak and the appearance of the third peak are solely due to the presence of the second AI state.

Pump-induced transparency and enhanced third-harmonic generation near an autoionizing state

S. J. van Enk, Jian Zhang, P. Lambropoulos

We analyze an electromagnetically induced transparency near an autoionizing state, which is at the same time stabilized against ionization. We show that the effect is fairly general as long as only one continuum is involved. We compare the efficiency for third-harmonic generation in this system with that in an intermediate two-photon resonance system, and discuss the advantages of the former. Explicit calculations are presented for a specific autoionizing resonance in Ca.
