Minimum uncertainty states for amplitude-squared squeezing: general solutions

Daoqi Yu, Mark S. Hillery

General solutions to the eigenvalue equation for amplitude-squared squeezed minimum uncertainty states have been found and investigated. An expression for the average photon number in these states is derived. The Q-function as well as the photocount distribution of these states has been investigated. Plots of Q-functions indicate that the 'manner' of amplitude-squared squeezing is different from that of normal squeezing. It is shown that twofold and fourfold symmetry of Q-function in phase space is related to the suppression of certain terms of the photocount probability for a quantum state. Finally, oscillation of the photocount probability in highly squeezed minimum uncertainty states for amplitude-squared squeezing has been found and interpreted in terms of 'interference in phase space'.

Phase-space representation of amplitude-squared squeezing

Mark S. Hillery

Phase-space pictures have proven to be useful in analyzing standard squeezing. Here such pictures are developed for amplitude-squared squeezing, a form of higher-order squeezing. They are used to examine amplitude-squared squeezing of the squeezed vacuum state and to suggest a method of producing amplitude-squared squeezed states using a nonlinear interferometer. The phase-space representation of a variable which is a mixture of the usual amplitude-squared squeezing variables is also discussed.

Ideal and destructive state reductions of correlated light fields and the continuous measurement of photon number

Vlasta Peřinová, A. Lukš, J. Křepelka

A continuous photon-number measurement has been assumed in the idler mode output from parametric down-conversion for an initial coherent state. The states generated in the signal mode due to the mode entanglement and the effects of both the destructive and the ideal reduction are described in terms of a quasidistribution of the complex field amplitude as well as of the density-matrix elements. The resulting near-number states in the ideal case are suitable for the study of the dynamics of phase and quadrature distributions rotated by the actual preferred phase. These states exhibit both number and quadrature squeezing. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
