Averaged collision and reaction rates in a two-species gas of ultracold fermions

Alexander Pikovski

Reactive or elastic two-body collisions in an ultracold gas are affected by quantum statistics. In this paper, we study ensemble-averaged collision rates for a two-species fermionic gas. The two species may have different masses, densities, and temperatures. We investigate how averaged collision rates are affected by the presence of Fermi spheres in the initial states; Pauli blocking of final states is not considered. It is shown that, independently on the details of the collision, Fermi-averaged collision rates deviate from Boltzmann-averaged ones, particularly for a gas with strong imbalance of masses or densities.

Inelastic Collisions of a Fermi Gas in the BEC-BCS Crossover

X. Du, Y. Zhang, John E. Thomas

We measure inelastic three-body and two-body collisional decay rates for a two-component Fermi gas of 6Li, which are highly suppressed by the Pauli exclusion principle. Our measurements are made in the BEC-BCS crossover regime, near the two-body collisional (Feshbach) resonance. At high temperature (energy) the data show a dominant three-body decay process, which is studied as a function of bias magnetic field. At low energy, the data show a coexistence of two-body and three-body decay processes near and below the Feshbach resonance. Below resonance, the observed two-body inelastic decay can arise from molecule-atom and molecule-molecule collisions. We suggest that at and above resonance, an effective two-body decay rate arises from collisions between atoms and correlated (Cooper) pairs that can exist at sufficiently low temperature.

Atom–molecule equilibration in a degenerate Fermi gas with resonant interactions

J E Williams, T Nikuni, N Nygaard +1 more

We present a nonequilibrium kinetic theory describing atom–molecule population dynamics in a two-component Fermi gas with a Feshbach resonance. Key collision integrals emerge that govern the relaxation of the atom–molecule mixture to chemical and thermal equilibrium. Our focus is on the pseudogap regime where molecules form above the superfluid transition temperature. In this regime, we formulate a simple model for the atom–molecule population dynamics. The model predicts the saturation of molecule formation that has been observed in recent experiments, and indicates that a dramatic enhancement of the atom–molecule conversion efficiency occurs at low temperatures.
