Generation and detection of photonic qutrit states by linear optics

Abstract

We address the problem of generation and detection of the four mutually unbiased biphoton polarization-qutrit bases by linear optics. First, the generation of the bases is studied. Our numeric results show that the linear optics method can be used to generate the 4 mutually unbiased basis qutrit states probabilistically with high fidelity. Second, we investigate whether or not linear polarization-optics components are sufficient to realize the simultaneous detection of the qutrit states forming a complete basis. Analytical results show that every state in two of the bases, namely only half of the 4 mutually unbiased bases qutrit states can be identified.

Experimental realization of polarization qutrits from nonmaximally entangled states

Giuseppe Vallone, Enrico Pomarico, F. De Martini +2 more

Based on a recent proposal [Phys. Rev. A 71, 062337 (2005)], we have experimentally realized two-photon polarization qutrits by using nonmaximally entangled states and linear optical transformations. By this technique, high-fidelity mutually unbiased qutrits are generated at a high brilliance level.

Bi-directional mapping between polarization and spatially encoded photonic qutrits

Qing Lin, Bing He

Qutrits, the triple level quantum systems in various forms, have been proposed for quantum information processing recently. By the methods presented in this paper, a biphotonic qutrit, which is encoded with the polarizations of two photons in the same spatial-temporal mode, can be mapped to a single-photon qutrit in spatial modes. It will make arbitrary unitary operation on such biphotonic qutrit possible if we can also realize the inverse map to polarization space. Among the two schemes proposed in this paper, the one based only on linear optics realizes an arbitrary U(3) operation with a very small success probability. However, if added with weak nonlinearity, the success probability can be greatly improved. These schemes are feasible with the current experimental technology.

Generation and detection of photonic qutrits

Yuntian Chen, Gunnar G. Bjork

A simpler setup is proposed to generate and measure such photonic qutrit MUBs. The generation of the qutrits is based on two-photon states coming from a frequency degenerate spontaneous down-conversion source (SPDC). The photons are subjected to individual SU(2) transformation before they are combined on a beam splitter. When both incident photons leave the same splitter output a certain qutrit state is generated. We search for the settings of the two SU(2) transformations to primarily optimize the fidelity of the generated states, and secondarily to optimize the success probability.
